What are your thoughts about each of them? What do you think about their accuracy?

I've been trying to understand vedic astrology a bit in these days, but due to language and culture differences, it's still kinda hard to get it. ^_^; But well, one of the most noticeable differences is that in different systems, the planets falls in different signs/degrees.

And then I came across this vedic astrology site that explains how western astrology isn't really valid: http://www.barbarapijan.com/bpa/Topics/Practice_Issues/Differences_western_Jyotisha.htm

I haven't read it all, but just wanted to share. X3 But what do you guys think?

(currently feeling sleepy so the speech might be weird lol)

*edit* by the way, have you ever seen your vedic chart (you can have one by choosing "whole signs" house system and sidereal chart in the "Options" section in astro.com - this is not the real vedic chart thought, but similar)? Do you feel identified with the signs of your ascendant and planets?

I'm intrigued by the fatalism of Vedic astrology...but I know nothing about it. If I had a bigger budget, I would get a reading done.

I don't understand vedic. Someone posted something about a venus something-something in another thread that says when you will start a relationship, and I had no idea what is was, and they never answered me when I asked. I looked on google and couldn't find anything. Vedic is frustrating.

I agree, Diana. Even with Comica's help on here (posting links to explanatory threads, etc), I find it hard to learn about Vedic online.

It's kinda hard to understand vedic astrology due to language and cultural differences. >_< Also, there's few information and we are also more used to the western system.

But well, it's still interesting to take a look at different things and different perspectives. X3

Has anyone here had a Vedic reading done?

Comica, do you find the Vedic astrology accurate re: romantic relationships? What are your experiences?

I find it very confusing. It really may be that I am so used to Western. I don't know.

The language does make it harder, because it's not only a different system, but a different language.

I think vedic can be VERY accurate.

I really want to know if I am having that venus something-something. ETA: Here is what it's actually called, so I don't keep callikng it "something - something!" I found the post. For women, it's actually jupiter, not venus.

quote:
Woman typically meet an important romantic connection during a Jupiter Dasha or Bhukti

I just tried reading something that explains it and I've never been so confused in my entire life! I have no idea what I just read.

I think western astrology can be just as fatalistic in its language as Vedic. Have you seen some of the posts around here

Hmm I'm not sure if it's really accurate or not, since my experience resumes in a few days lol. ^_^; Also, aside of the calculation that is provided by the simple free match making services online (those that has 36 points in total), there are also more details to check (that 36 points system is actually solely based on the Moon sign and the star constellation the Moon was during our birth). But again, due to language barrier and lack of information online, I can't really get the rest at all. >_<

But well, there are certain things that it might not make sense to western astrologers, like how Moon in trine signs are actually not compatible for marriage and might even mean no children. Of course, I would hesitate to believe in things that doesn't make much sense to me, although I think that there must be some wisdom behind the rules in a system that existed for such a long time (in this case, it was mentioned that trine Moon signs aren't compatible coz the couple might not emotionally rely on each other - well, it might not really make sense for us, but by the way, we also have to remember that the vedic astrology system is based on Indian culture).

I think it's more complex than just the moon signs - there's a lot of other stuff going on, but yeah, the language translations are sometimes not doing things justice.

Brahmins have made Vedic Astrology very confusing very intentionally. Just the way software programmers create complex Application Programming Interfaces as job security in IT maintenance, the brahmins shrouded simple astrology with complex sanskrit terminlogy and unnecessary rituals.

I can say conculsively that character and psychological assessment in Vedic Astrology is incorrect. Western Astrologers have triumphed over vedics too many times.

YET when it comes to certainPhysical traits, or medical astrology and transit event timing using their excellent 120 year cycle (based on the 27 Lunar Mansions starting point), it is a must know science.

For a start, everyone must download [while it is still free], a copy of Junior Jyotish Software.

Hope to create a short course in it soon. I tried once but did not explain it clearly enough.

Hi All,

I have a certificate in Vedic Astrology from the ACVA(American Council of Vedic Astrologers), so I know something about the system. A certificate does not an expert make though, so please forgive any mistakes I make. I have also had two readings done for me by a very respected vedic Astrologer in Los Angeles (Chakrapnai Ullal). I find Vedic astrology equally as wonderful as western astrology. No better or worse. Each astrology has it's strength's and weakness. The usual take on it is that vedic astrology is a better predictive system and western astrology is a better psychological system. I think this is generally true, but both can be pretty profound in either area. The western system is solar based and therefore perhaps more psychological, where as the lunar sysytems like vedic astrology are more practicle and predictive in some ways.(Moon is exlated in taurus). So one system is preditction driven and the other is character driven. It wasn't always this way though. Western astrology has some pretty amazing predictive techniques from the middle ages and earlier that just lost favor with modern astrology as the emphasis becomae more psychological in the early 20th century. But, anyway, this is the usual feeling about the two systems.
Almost all indigenous cultures have developed their own astrology, but what makes India so unique is that over it's long history it has been occupied by so many foreign people's that it has added so much astrology to it's native system. It virtually is a library of all ancient astrology! Indian astrology has been influenced by Arabic and Greek astrology and there are literally key texts that credit both cultures with certain ideas and insights. So one of the most fascinating things about the Vedic system is that it contains huge amounts of ancient material from many cultures. Some of which has been lost in those other systems of astrology. It is a living ancient astrology! Maybe in the middle ages western astrology was very similar, but not now.
That said, it is believed that the rishi's and holy men of india developed this system of astrology to help people understand their karma and find ways to work with their spiritual destiny and alter it if possible. It also offers remedies for harsh aspects, such as mantra's, yantra's, gem stones and puja's. Amung other techniques. So it was devised first and foremost as a spiritual tool. At least according to the sources i have read.
So the birth chart is looked at as a record of one's karma in this life. They have techniques also that help one see past life and future life karma too.
The vedic system uses sidereal astrology .It is the least abstract and proabaly the oldest system of astrology. The ancients were more apt to use a sysytem that corresponded with their view of the sky rather than a theoretical ,season based sytem like the tropical zodiac. They also use an equal sign system which has become popular in the last few years in the west. This means that all the planets in a certain sign are always in the same house.
Also vedic asrtrology does not recognize the planets beyond saturn. They only use seven planets and the two nodes, which are extremely powerful in their system. The trans saturns are not denied ,but they are thought to be beyond time-space and not too influencial. But the south node ketu works much like neptune(psychic indicator etc) and the north node rahu is like a blend of uranus and pluto (insatiable desires etc).
So Vedic astrology is a belend of a totally pragmatic prediction based system and a highly developed spiritual system of astrology. Everything in the chart is spiritual and karmic.
There is also Nadi astrology which is suppossed to be the result of the rishi's being so advanced with their predictions that they starting doing charts for people who were not yet born. These were written on leaves and stored with families that inherited them. When the karma of the individual whose reading was stored in the families house was ripe they would find them and have their nadi chart read. I have no feeling one way or the other regarding this because i have heard that some nadi readings are amazing and others seemed untrue. So no opinion there.
One of the nice things about vedic astrology is that it doesn't just tell you about your fate and leave you there. It offers solutions. It has a series of mantra's for each planet that must be chanted thousands of times to helped mitigate the karma of that planet. Vedic astrologers also prescribe gem stones for weak planets and to remedy the chart in certain ways. You can also have hindu priests preform yagyas and other spiritual ceremonies that are meant to relieve karma. I have not done any of this expect for the gemstone,so I can;t personally say anyhting pro or con. I have a heavily afflicted moon in my vedic chart and i had a cultered pearl i used to wear around my neck. I only used it for a few months, so I'm not sure I gave it enough time. But honeslty I felt little difference. But please donlt tkae my anecdote as the last word.
The healing an afflicted planet is really based on the idea of asking for grace. You know the karma is there and you know you must have earned it ,but you are appealing to the universe for mercy and you perform austerities and sacrifices to induce an act of grace. I find that very beautiful.
Anyway, this is just a brief and imperfect into. hope you got somehting useful out of it!

Thanks!!!!

Vedic astrology is 23 degrees difference from western. For instance, my 24 degree taurus moon in vedic would be at 1 degree.

My scorpio sun at 17 degrees, would be, 24 degrees Libra in Vedic.

Each sign is 30 degrees and you subtract 23 from the degree your sign falls under...

I'm also intrigued by Vedic astrology. I remember reading that a person is born being "Manglik Dosha" or not..I'm not sure what this means but apparently if a Manglik must marry another person born with the Manglik dosha influence in order to have a harmonious relationship. If they marry someone who doesn't have this influence in their own chart, then there is a chance that the spouse will die an early sudden death.
That kind of creeped me out..

I wish it wasn't so expensive for a reading..I'd love to learn more!
