I am with Amowls on this one.the 1 orb aspects in synastry should illuminate the most significant connections and dynamic. This will give a very reliable picture.
But then I would look at slightly wider orbed aspects, too.
My preferred orb is 3 degree, even though I sometimes stretch the boundaries for natal aspects. Sometimes wider aspects may even be relevant in synastry, but ONLY if they are:
1. part of a stellium, of which at least one aspect is within 3 degrees.
2. relating to a midpoint. For example I wouldn`t really consider a Venus-Mars trine of 5 degrees.
But now let`s say: male`s Mars is on 6 Cancer. Female`s Venus is on 11 Pisces and her Pluto is on 1 Scorpio. The midpoint of her Venus-Pluto would be on 6 Capricorn, which is exactly opposing the male Mars; in this case probably the aspect still would have some relevance.
Of course it was even stronger if there were real aspects between the three planets, involved in a midpoint configuration.
Like for example:
His Venus on 4 Taurus, his Pluto on 8 Virgo
her Venus on 6 Capricorn
his Venus-Pluto-mp would be on 6 Cancer, opposing her Venus.
At the same time her Venus is well within orb of trining his Venus as well as his Pluto.
But for a first glance, I would stick to 3 degrees.
It is actually the orb we are shown at fullmoon.
The fullmoon is considered being a fullmoon just in the timeframe of six degrees (Moon is approaching the exact fullmoon for 3 degrees, and then separating from it for 3 degrees.).
