January's new Moon, falling on January 15, is a wonderful symbol of effervescence and fun, skipping lightly through life, there's a feeling of mischief about it, with joy mixed with escapism and the thrill of being alive. The Sabian Symbol is Capricorn 26: A Nature Spirit Dancing in the Mist of a Waterfall.
Keywords: Dancing in a carefree manner, water and fun, Peter Pan characters, mountains, mists, fog, reveling in nature, picking up subtle energies, being healed because of the atmosphere (altitude), celebrations of the natural worlds, waterfalls, water spraying or dripping, finding one's habitat, Chinese water torture, water nymphs, fairies and nature spirits, elementals, devas and angels.
The Caution: Irresponsibility, avoidance of real situations, not taking anything seriously, flitting off, being held down and repressed when one is longing for light relief, feeling abused by pressure, being subjugated by cold, icy elements, thoughts or emotions, tricks or perceptions of lights, fear of dark places.
This is an especially light, fun loving and enjoyable time as Venus, the planet of beauty, love, resources and refinement, is exactly conjunct (together with) this new Moon, and is on this Nature Spirit in the Waterfall degree.
The 'Nature Spirits' dance in the 'Mist' because they know to avoid the areas of heavy pressure in the 'Waterfall'. Even though the strength and power of emotional flow is in the middle of the 'Waterfall', it is not possible to survive under such a torrent for very long. It is not always good to assault one's self with the full brunt of pressure from life. If we are going to dive in, we need to be like the image in this wonderful painting by my friend Carolyn Tyrer of her lovely daughter, Jessica.
Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn, is going retrograde just two days before this new Moon. The Sabian Symbol is one of finding new understandings, new realizations, new beliefs perhaps, new ways of being, but one has to be paying attention. The Sabian Symbol is Libra 5: A Man Teaching The True Inner Knowledge of The New World to His Students. This speaks of guidance and protection on the path, being a guiding light for others, wisdom, looking for truth, seeking answers to complicated questions, listening and learning, turning to others to receive guidance, instinctual knowledge, pioneers on the path, teachers and students, secrets of the new age. Saturn is sitting on this degree for weeks and weeks, which is a good thing; we can live and learn - sometimes the lessons are a bit harsh and often we may feel like we're being hit over the head to get the message, but the message is definitely there and worth getting.
It seems that this new Moon is like a gift with it's lightness of being as Mercury is sitting stationary (but turning direct right around the new Moon) on Capricorn 6, almost exactly square Saturn. This square can bring about heavy thoughts, negative thinking and feeling defeatist or going over things too much or too darkly in one's mind. The Sabian Symbol indicates the need to let go of knowing where you're going or what your destination is. It's Capricorn 6: Ten Logs Lie Under An Archway Leading To Darker Woods. This speaks of journeys into the unknown, getting past the past, tenacity, stamina and energy preservation, things to consider before moving deeper, thresholds, archways, entrances, dark forests, the unknown and the unknowable, delving into the subconscious, memories that lead into deep or strange places, gateways, fallen trees. It can be things blocked or obstructed, especially pathways, looking for directions that are obscure or concealed.
Just as Mercury seems to imply letting go of things from the past before plunging ahead into the unknown, the North Node shows that we have to sometimes just acknowledge that certain things aren't working in our lives, whether it's relationships, our job, thoughts, attitudes, emotions, ways of life. The Sabian Symbol is Capricorn 22: A General Revealing Nobility of Character By Accepting Defeat Gracefully. Time to pull the plug on things that are leading you in the wrong direction. There's no use waging a battle that leads to nothing, nowhere or to no good.
This letting go motif is amplified by Chiron, the Wounded Healer and the stories we tell ourselves, on Aquarius 24: A Man Turning His Back on His Passions Teaches Deep Wisdom From His Experience. Neptune, Chiron and Jupiter have all inhabited this degree for some time, showing the need to take with you what works in your life but to turn away from those things that don't. It may sound like obvious advice, but sometimes we need a shove in order to actually do it. Chiron may be just the shove we need.
Jupiter also shows us the need to let go. It's on Aquarius 30: Moonlit Fields, Once Babylon, Are Blooming White. This speaks of the past and taking what's valuable into the future. It can show big changes in how we see our 'civilization', are we operating in ways that benefit our futures, or destroying what was once valuable?
Mars offers us some sense of joy and hope in amongst all that may be going on in our lives. It's on Leo 16: Brilliant Sunshine Just After a Storm. It seems we're meant to dance in that mist of the waterfall; to find joy, to celebrate and to endeavor to stay away from the harsher aspects of life that batter and hurt.
Remember to dance, celebrate and enjoy life at this new Moon!
