would one feel it approaching as one feels transits as the orb closes in? mine is tomorrow and i have to say i feel that it has already gone into effect, as of last night. most notably, that horrible pluto square venus in last year's return chart is just gone. and i mean, i felt that blasted thing all the freaking time. and now, not at all.

whatchoothink?

ooh and along those lines, d'ya think a solar return chart behaves similarly to transits in that when the year finishes up, the issues do too? i certainly feel that i worked THROUGH that square and that the timing is exactly right to have it no longer effect me. i've never thought of s.r.s in this way.. interesting.

i guess this is a two-parter question.

hi woah city!
i would have to agree.
my solar return is friday. and i feel the energy of my last solar return giving is last sputter of energy while i've been feeling this year's solar return since november.

(my own personal rant)
i had a perfect mutable T-square at moon 20 gemini (5h) square saturn 20 virgo (8h) opposite uranus 20 uranus (2h). let's just say i had a lot of stopping and starting in general. no flowing. there were periods of idleness and inactivity then lots of activity and busyness. job/$ was super sketchy. never could quite get anything off the ground. broke up with my boyfriend of 2 years (twice). pluto in the 11th house left me isolated for days at a time. it was awful. my SR chart was very intense for 2009/2010.

and now my 2010/2011 chart is even more intense with a big fat 10th house stellium. my career has taken over and its all i focus on. AND i have another pretty tight T-square sun opposite mars square moon. wtf?!luckily pluto is in the 8th house so no going where it doesn't belong. and i've got gemini ascendant for lots of activity. yay!

Are you using your current location as the reference place? (i mean the location you will be on your birthday) I agree about the orb closing in regarding influence, but more to what youre saying a matter of days, not if we're talking a month. Hmm, what was venus/pluto square like?

From what I get, they work in a way where you're presented with all of these issues and you basically have a year to work em out, make em work for you. Angular planets are very important, too. And if they're sorta-in-a-way like transits..imo not really. The solar return gives you a new frame to work with for the next year on a large scale, lunar returns gives you a new frame but its a small one and its only for a month, natals receiving transits can last for a day like a transit moon conj your mercury or a few yrs like a hard saturn or outer planet conjunction.

to read your chart the best, (yeah, it's long, blame my mercury sq. jupiter ),
----first, know your natal aspects/placements keeping in mind importantly which houses theyre placed & rule, then youll know what theyre made of. for instance sun in aries H5 will be a very different sun if it rules H12, meaning whatever aspects in anyway hit your sun they will trigger your h12 bringing up things in your life that would definitely not be traditionally associated with your sun's dynamic. houses are very important. if your venus is in h6, and transiting sun is conj your venus youre going to likely have a very pleasant environment at work that day or happily organize the heck out of something, because your personal venus is associated with that environment, if it were in h5 that might be a day you have a really fun night partying. you can only stretch your natal placements so far, theres only so much work they can do. this is why many people wonder "why didnt xyz happen i dont understand" - they failed to look at what that planet is associated with natally.
----now that you know what your planet can do, what room it has to work within, or if you still have no clue anyway, track your transits. this will make it loud and clear. highly recommended. use it like a diary of sorts, noting what happened on a strong transit. transiting moon is too much to keep track of, but youll notice when it hits angles and when it conj your sun the strongest. but if youre highly cancer/moon ruled it'll be a biggie.
----so you have your chart you know what works and how, you know your transits, now you can see your progressions. these are relatively easy to keep in your mind in the same place that you keep your natal since their positions move so slowly, that once you have the framework in place youll pretty much be set. this is YOU only *new and improved* - if you think you dont see how theyre working in your life then youre not really looking at your chart and you need to backtrack a bit. most important is sign changes here, esp sun moon asc. a close second is house placement change. now with this youre not looking at your progressed chart's house divisions, here you're plotting your progressed planets onto your natal and seeing in which houses they are now located. a sign change and a house change is very important. these always have to be read along with the natal to see how youre moving along. the ways in which youre growing (progression) and the aspects they make to your basic self (natal) are VERY important. here you'll see how the adjustment is working out for you, where the tension is and where past thinking is either hindering or helping the change youre trying to make. this is best to look at when feeling down in the dumps as the progressions give you a new outlook and new material to work with. sometimes we're changing but we dont even realize. getting mentally in step with whats going on is important, this is one thing thats very good about astrology.
----transits to progressions. crucial as well as those to the natal. i give them the same strength. now you know what youre made of, how youre changing, you need to get the complete picture. transits to progressions tie up any loose ends. personal example: i have natal sun sq uranus. about 7 yrs ago t. uranus was conj my sun, an interesting time. i was dealing with issues related to that planet for a few years after. and am wondering what is going on as that issue is still in my life and the transit is long gone. looking at transits to progressions i saw something very surprising, transiting uranus had been making a conjunction to my progressed sun for at least a few yrs after it had past the conj to my natal sun. it's *still* following my ass although now sun has moved past it but its still in orb. these transits to progressions keep the issue in your face until its complete, this is why i think progressions are so important to the bigger picture of a natal. once it's moved on and the transit isnt hitting your progressed or natal any longer then you know that you can take a rest from that part of your self and focus more on something else. with transits to progressions i only pay attn. jupiter onwards. but you can cut it off later if youd like and start with saturn or even one of the outers. whatever planet that has domain over the issue thats of most concern is the one that should be focused on.
----solar returns. like mentioned above i see them as frameworks for the coming year. just a map of things to work on, issues that youll likely be confronted with in yourself and how you approach the world, and more likely than not things that you will be very focused on. reading them similar to natals angular planets will have a strong focus, the natal house that your solar return asc falls in will be of strong importance that area of life, the chart ruler of solar return in the solar return has a lot of importance as well. these are things that will likely have your attention for the coming year. if there are stelliums also see which natal house they fall in to see another focus on the matter. most easy to see is a SR stellium on the asc, as that will quite obviously be a major focus the next yr no matter what, when you relate it back to the natal. this is all in addition to reading the solar return as a "new temporary natal" as well.

electric mind, wow that is interesting! happy birthday! that is so interesting about your career flow changing along with your new SR. do you have any really great aspects in your new SR to counter the intensity? thanks for your reading a while back too; i've never really been into solar returns but several months ago i looked mine up for last year and the pluto/venus square explained so much..

that energy was BASICALLY like.. really freeking intense rampant insecurity in my relationship. i've been with my guy for a year (since about a month prior to my SR last year) and as of around my birthday i began to feel constantly worried i was not good enough for him, or that his feelings were not as strong as mine. our relationship is INTENSE and i feel he is the love of my life with all my heart. which scared the crap out of me. i was already dealing with all kinds of anxiety which his lovely gentleness both soothed and coaxed out of me (felt so safe to talk about stuff but simultaneously sort of increased my anxieties). he's also a very quiet guy, not big on talking about HIS feelings, which only increased my own worries. mega pluto action between us in all chart forms and he's a sun/pluto exactly conjunct in scoprio in the first decan (scorpio), and our compo venus is scorpio conj his mercury, opposed my moon (etc etc), so pluto was having its way with me forsure! on top of that, the last 3 years pluto has been back and forth over my venus by conjunction, in transit. so these energies are something i've been forced to reckon with.

and in my NEW solar return chart i have a semisquare between venus and pluto which is incredibly interesting because i still feel that intensity, only it's WAY more proactive and i feel in control of it and like DOING something with it. it's really astounding. semisquare, from what i've read, is about being forced into action. also some goshdarn amazing trines to my SR moon (SR venus, sun, neptune, chiron), so everything feels like it's flowing more and i feel supported emotionally by.. life i guess.. to go for what i want and to go with what i feel. it's awesome.

lonake, do you use current city or birth city in yours? the chart doesn't change a WHOLE lot. initially i used birth city but when i reentered the info recently it came up with current city even though i didn't select it, so i assumed astro.com prefers current city for some reason..

i am printing your descriptions. they are fantastic!! holy crap, thanks so much for typing all of that..

pire, thanks for posting that link! that is a lot of info! can't wait to [find the time to] sink my teeth into it.

oh and lonake, to further answer your question, the pluto-venus square felt like this intense heaviness, almost like a cage around me emotionally with pluto poking at me constantly and forcing me ever-inward toward and through my darkness (as pertains to my perception of love). and since a couple of days before my SR that energy completely dissipated and now i just feel empowered!

Hi woah,
The current location where youre physically placed the day of your new birthday. If you're traveling this gets confusing, then you'd have to see which time of day the return would be exact and then remember the city for that time. If you stay in the same city all day, then no worries, just choose that city. I like to get really specific because in a few instances the ASC will be a different sign, depending..

@ holy crap,
you're welcome

Reg. pluto sq venus I was interested in an 'outsider's' perspective since i have the square natally @ 1 degree. Thanks for sharing
