the third house is often overlooked and misunderstood. since i have my moon there, i've always wanted to know more about it. cookbook interpretations have always left me wanting.

(this article help me understand more: http://theinnerwheel.com/2010/03/10/i-dont-knows-on-third/)

the third house has to do with the environment that we unconsciously absorb. it knowledge that we "know" based on unconscious immediate experience. (in the article linked above, it talks about 3rd house/gemini = knowing, 9th house/sagittarius = understanding)

in my chart, my moon in the 3rd house is square my 3rd house ruler, neptune in the 12th house. my 3rd house ruler, neptune, is conjunct my ascendant and jupiter.

i came up with my own interpretation based on my experience and astro knowledge. here goes:

with this info i was able to relate my moon placement/aspects to my being adopted. for several months after birth, a baby has no awareness separate from its mother. when i was born i was immediately physically separated from my mother and was without a mother for about a month+ of my life. so it seems like i latched on to my environment, my environment became my surrogate mother.

this is a problem that i still have now. i over identify with my environment in a psychic way. it has been difficult for me to stay in my body. i always feel like i'm hovering just outside of it. i am easily distracted and easily influenced, psychically, by the group of people i am around and the place i am in. i feel the over all tone of the room in a very personal way.

this is great for me as an artist because people area able to have a quite an emotional experience during my performances. in my personal life, it is annoying and stressful. i prefer to be alone most of the time and when i do go out it takes lots of sleep for me to recover. i'm always unconsciously tapping into people and things and its super draining.

i think one thing that will help is living in a more peaceful environment. perhaps by a body of water in a remote area. or at least having some type of refuge there at some point.

this realization really helped me so much. it is also helping me get to the bottom of my chronic allergy and sinus issues.

also, my moon in aries in the 3rd house definitely speaks to my experience with my siblings. one of my brothers, who is only 2.5 years older than me, was very traumatized by my arrival in the family. my adoption was last minute and kind of a now or never situation. he didn't have time to adjust. we had a very verbally and physically violent relationship during childhood. he would steal my bottles and just do all of the regular sibling rivalry stuff by multiplied! i definitely lived out that aries sense of survival with my sibling. (interestingly, my bro has leo on the 3rd house cusp with sun in the first house in gemini. talk about vying for attention!)

hope this helps someone else.

It simply means you move alot you never stay in one place too long. That's what having a 3rd house moon means.

Meditate on that.

Moon in Aries, individuality.. your mother was a very head strong person. This manifests in you because you want to be different from your siblings? Have more important things to do then them?

With the square to Cap 12th house planets, this makes perfect sense because you don't move around alot it's something you deal with alone and inside. Jupiter/Neptune in Capricorn square your Moon.. Maybe a deep problem with your mothers background? Where is she from?

Hey Electric Mind,

I have Pisces Moon in the 3rd square Sun ,Asc, Venus & Uranus. I know what you mean about the cookbook descriptions leaving you with a sense of wanting...everyone elses house placements seems much more thrilling, or at least accurate, lol.

In any event, I am somewhat close to my siblings, I have 5 older sibling, but the age differences between us and distance as well had left me to be raised like an only child.
My parents fought a lot, so I think my moon helped me to gauge my environment and my parents mood so I could be prepared for any showdowns. I was always hyper aware of other's emotions and its incredibly hard to lie to me. I can spot a dishonest or untrustworthy person as soon as they step into the room. It can be annoying and draining, especially when I don't want to be concerned with other people's emotions since it leaves no room for me to sit with or even understand my own. Its a great placement for giving advice and maybe even for being a little intuitive.

These days I'm much better since I ground myself and my chakras and give myself a psychic shield that keeps me in my own body/aura/space and keeps others in their own. Now I literally have more space to just be me.

I also have pisces on the 3rd house cusp with Neptune in the 12th (trining my moon and opposing my Mercury). My Mars is in the 3rd in Aries. Psychically speaking, I feel like I have no boundaries with my immediate enviroment....I seem to absorb EVERYTHING, and I have a number of other placements that indicate the same thing too. It often irritates or angers me too, unless its a positive feeling....then I feel super energized. I wonder if that's mars' influence?

My Mars squares my Uranus/Saturn conjunction in the 12th but not my Neptune (unless you want to count a 7 degree orb). Life with my siblings is also like the above. Its very Neptunian and Martian...there's no psychic boundary between us so we irritate/anger eachother very often. Its not a very 'peaceful' relationship to speak of...LMAO. My most immediate sibling is actually a Pisces with a very aggressive Moon/Mars conjunction in Gemini.

My parents did alot of comparing between myself and my sister too, so that didn't really help things. hehe

Moon in Sagittarius in 3rd, here.
Square Saturn
Trine Jupiter
Loosely conjunct Neptune (12)
Loosely oppose Sun (11)
Possible OOS opposition to Venus (10)

Howard Sasports sums me up pretty well.

quote:
While the Sun in the 3rd bursts in on the scene and wants to create an impression on the immediate environment, the Moon in this house reflects and is shaped by the
surroundings.

As there is the ability to 'feel' what others are thinking, those with this placement may have some difficulty in distinguishing between their own thoughts and the ruminations of others around them. At times, they may believe that they are being objective and rational when in actual fact they are reacting on the basis of some emotional complex. Situations will be coloured according to their moods and sensitivities. If they are in a positive frame of mind, then they will interpret everything positively. If they feel touchy and vulnerable, the same environment will be interpreted quite differently. The mind is imaginative; and there is usually a retentive memory. The Sun in the 3rd house believes that knowledge is power; the Moon in the 3rd craves knowledge for the security it brings to truly know how something works. Since the Moon is associated with influences from the past, there may be a fascination for such subjects of study as arhaeology, genealogy and history. This placement gives a certain adaptability to changing environments, but the mind may wander or fluctuate from one interest to another. The relationship to siblings - especially female relatives such as sisters, aunts or girl cousins - is worth examining for clues to the psychological make-up of those with this placement. Comfort and security is sought through a sibling or a relative, or they may have had to be 'mother' to others around them during the growing-up years. The actual mother may be related to more like an older sister than a parent. The Gauquelins found that this placement confers some degree of writing talent. Unless the Moon were in an Air sign, the writing would be likely to display heartfelt emotion or describe personal memories and experiences. Public speakers with the Moon in the 3rd should be able to sway the feelings of the audience. Teachers with this placement can relate to the deeper feelings and needs of their students.

with my Neptune in 3rd which squares my Moon in Pisces

my 3rd house contains Mercury conjunct Venus in Scorpio and Jupiter and Neptune in Sagittarius

Oh wow, Nine, that Sapport expert hit the nail right on the spot! I've got Pisces Moon in the 3rd, my mother has always been more like a sister, probably since she is only 18 years older and I'm her only child, and as a kid we were always moving, and when she was depressed after a brake up, I was somehow depressed. In general the females I'm closest to, I'm receptive to their emotions, but especially to my mother, there is some kind of unspoken connection between us. I also am very touchy about surroundings and have an uncanny ability to sense "vibes," which works great in retail

hmmm...i don't relate to that interpretation, other than the boundary issues (but that could be moon square neptune, or neptune conjunct ascendent.)

in general, i think i take issue with mundane interpretations of the houses. i like them interpreted more as developmental stages. also, i am really bugged when astrologers don't know the difference between a planet in a sign and a planet in the house. i believe that there is a distinct difference.

moon in the third in in pisces is different than neptune in the third. the moon represents our instinctual self, our emotional self. i think that the moon is unaware. its the part of us the developed in response to our experience of our mother, our bonding/attachment and separation.

neptune in the 3rd has nothing to do with the mother, in my opinion (unless its making aspects to the moon).

I agree

but what you said

"this is a problem that i still have now. i over identify with my environment in a psychic way. it has been difficult for me to stay in my body. i always feel like i'm hovering just outside of it. i am easily distracted and easily influenced, psychically, by the group of people i am around and the place i am in. i feel the over all tone of the room in a very personal way."

That can be said for Neptune in 3rd too. After all, Neptune is to be the planet of dissolution,psychic,mystical.....a planet of extreme sensitivity

and yes.......it squares my Moon in Pisces with only 1'23 orb

both Moon in Pisces and Moon square Neptune are psychic, emotional sponges any way, and so they can easily overidentify with the environment they are in

I was away from mom for awhile in early childhood. I was in a foster home for awhile with an elderly couple because my mom was in jail. It was when I was around 2 years old.

I also felt confused and unclear about my identity because of my mixed racial background , seeing my mom is white and I am not. My mom never knew her biological mother, and so I don't know much about my maternal roots. I never knew my biological father, and so I don't know about my paternal roots. Therefore, I know little about my roots overall, and so that factors into confusion and uncertainty about identity.

3rd house is early education

and that fits with my special education

that also factored into my confusion and uncertainty about identity whether I was smart or stupid......it's all connected

I am the only child that my mom raised.
She gave up her oldest son for adoption before she met my father. She didn't tell me about him until I was almost 22 years old. Then 10 years later, she told me that my father had a daughter 5 years before he met my mother.

I had 4 stepsisters. I lived with 2 of them for awhile. The youngest of them was 9 years older than me. The oldest was a couple of years older than my mother. I haven't seen them since I was 18. My mother broke up with my stepfather around time.

Because of my family past, I do have a strong interest in genealogy, history.
My 4th house ruler Jupiter in Sagittarius conjunct the Imum Coeli might be the indicator for that.

Watching Alex Haley's Roots movies were inspiring.

oh wow glaucus! thanks for sharing all of that.

the thing about my moon square neptune is that neptune rules my 3rd house and its in the 12th house conjunct the ascendant. so it does a double whammy on my boundary issues. i find myself becoming this neptunian and jupiterian projection screen when i'm in public.

as far as early education i could read at around the same time i cld talk. i started school a year earlier than normal. so i was always around older kids. it didn't bother me. i did well in school. i wasn't an over acheiver i only did wht i felt like doing.

my biological mother and father...they r friends. were never married. i'm their only child together. my bio father was married before and i have two bros from him. they are half mexican. one is 6 months older than me and the other is 14 mths younger. they were taken away by their grandfather. he didn't approve. he moved them to texas when they were young and they never knew their father. the same time i met him one of my bros had found him and came and lived with him.

i have 2 sisters by my bio mother. one older by 4 yrs and one younger by 2. all different fathers.

i've met all of my biological family. my 4th house ruler is mars. its in the 10th house conjunct saturn and square my sun in the 1st house.

I've also got an aspect between the Moon and Neptune (Moon sextile Neptune). But my Neptune is in the 1st, so I've always struggled with being a direct and assertive person, I come across as very Neptunian and people often misinterpret me. I also just realized that my mother has a Moon - Neptune square, and her Neptune is in the 4th. She had a terrible childhood, full of domestic violence between her parents, and both were alcoholics, Neptune and substance abuse need I say more? In fact my my mother's father died at 53 from liver failure from alcohol, and he also had Pisces Moon, not sure which house, but it is weird to think I have the same Sun and Moon (Leo/Pisces) as him...

"oh wow glaucus! thanks for sharing all of that."

You're welcome.

"the thing about my moon square neptune is that neptune rules my 3rd house and its in the 12th house conjunct the ascendant. so it does a double whammy on my boundary issues. i find myself becoming this neptunian and jupiterian projection screen when i'm in public."

I actually have a triple Moon-Pisces/Neptune/12th house double whammy.
I have Moon in Pisces, Moon square Neptune, Moon trine 12th house ruler (Sun)

"as far as early education i could read at around the same time i cld talk. i started school a year earlier than normal. so i was always around older kids. it didn't bother me. i did well in school. i wasn't an over acheiver i only did wht i felt like doing."

It was complicated for me. I did 3 years of special education that included intensive speech therapy, phonics training as well as training in motor skills and social skills. I was in regular classroom in kindergarten. In 1st grade, I was in special education classroom with intellectually handicapped in another school. Later on in the 1st grade, I was discovered to have above average intelligence and had IQ far higher than everybody else in the special education classrom. In 2nd grade, I was in special education with children with only learning differences in another school. I started to get mainstreamed in regular classroom around the end of 2nd grade. I was yelling at special education classmates for not getting the answers right, and so I was showing impatience in the classroom that was too slow for me. The year after that, I was in regular 2nd grade classroom for most of the day and returned in special education classroom for a year. In 3rd grade and beyond, I was a regular student with no special help. I was predicted to start being a regular classroom in 7th grade. I started much earlier than predicted. I had made rapid progress, and they told my mom because of my having a high IQ. I was given award for most improved student in my 4th grade classroom and got an award for outstanding in Spelling. At the beginning of the year, I was exhibiting typical ADHD behaviors and was a problem student. I was B average student in 6th grade, and my teacher told my parents that I had capability of getting straight A's. In 8th grade, I average 12.9 Grade Level on CTBS (Comphrehensive Test of Basic Skills) which included 97 percentile in Language, 91 percentile in Mathematics which greatly in contrast with my 60 percentile in Reading. I was a B average student until 10th grade. Then my grades got bad. I already had trouble with Algebra in 9th grade and got an F in it. In 10th grade, I took it again and got a D. I had 2 other D's. By 11th grade, I didn't view myself as a college prep student and gave up on going to college. I barely graduated from high school. I had a D for both semesters in English class, but I got an A on both finals. I aced the 1st semester final that was on the Odyssey because I read mythological since I was 11 years old. I wrote an essay on stereotypes for my 2nd semester final. It was my only essay that wasn't a D or an F. Now I realize that I had problems with Algebra because it's very leftbrained, linear stuff which is difficult for me as a rightbrained, nonlinear processing, visual, picture thinker. I couldn't process the auditory sequential learning environment which was a mismatch for my visual spatial learning style. I didn't have the attention span nor interest in subjects that were presented in a dry, linear way to me. I couldn't regurgitate the information as more and more reading was required. I know that I would have done much better in school if it was a multi-sensory learning environment. I would have thrived in a Montessori or Waldorf school system. I would have even done well in mainstream education environments before the 1790's which was when Cambridge Tutor William Farish introduced the grading system/auditory sequential learning environment that is now the epitome of the modern mainstream education environment. I know that I don't have a learning disability but a learning style that doesn't match with modern mainstream education environment.

That's an example a a person that fits with the dual/twice exceptional (gifted and disabled), the Indigo/Crystal, and the Edison Gene personality types.

I didn't fit in with special education classroom for the intellectually handicapped, the special education classroom for learning differences, nor the regular classroom.

An abusive home environment also factored in my problems with school. I know that if I was in a stable, secure home environment would also have made a big difference.

I got a certificate from a 720 hour fast-paced,intensive massage therapy course in 2005, and I was a B average student. That was because I did very well on my practical exams and had perfect attendance. I chose the certificate program instead of the Associate degree program because I wanted to avoid the academics part of it. I did well in a hands-on learning environment.

my 3rd house is complicated and it includes the following

Neptune in 1'48 Sagittarius in 3rd oppose the conjunction of retrograde Saturn in 5'08 Gemini in 9th,retrograde transneptunian dwarf planet candidate Varuna in 3'01 Gemini in 9th,and retrograde major asteroid Pallas in 2'36 Gemini in 9th, square Moon in 3'10 Pisces in 6th for a t-square. It also sextiles Pluto in '51 Libra in 1st. Pallas is like a 2nd Mercury, and it has to do with creative intelligence, pattern recognition. Varuna involves evolutionary intensifed lessons as a transneptunian, and it involves judgment, justice, cosmic order, and matters of competence. Pluto involves evolutionary intensified lessons as a transneptunian, and it involves transformation, regeneration, and intensity which arguably could be the characteristics of all the transneptunian objects.

Jupiter in 8'17 Sagittarius in 3rd oppose retrograde Saturn in 5'08 Gemini in 9th, square Moon in 3'10 Pisces in 6th.

Mercury in 18'21 Scorpio conjunct Venus in 21'47 Scorpio in 3rd, square transneptunian dwarf planet Makemake in 16'2O Leo in 12th.
Makemake involves evolutionary intensified lessons as a transneptunian, and it involves fertility, creativity, and communications.

Venus in 21'47 Scorpio in 3rd trine retrograde transneptunian dwarf planet candidate Orcus in 22'28 Cancer in 11th ,square Mars in 25'54 Aquarius in 6th.
Orcus involves evolutionary intensified lessons as a transneptunian, and it involves matters dealing with oaths, promises.

My conjunction of Sun in 5'20 Scorpio, transneptunian dwarf planet candidate Ixion in 5'25 Scorpio, and transneptunian dwarf planet candidate Quaoar in 2'22 Scorpio are in 2nd house, but they are 3 degrees from being in 3rd house. In the whole sign house system, they are in the 3rd house. They trine my Moon in 3'10 Pisces in 6th house. Moon is in 7th house in whole sign house system. Ixion involves evolutionary intensified lessons as a transneptunian, and it involves second changes, matters dealing with gratitude, and karmic wheel. Quaoar involves evolutionary isntensified lessons as a transneptunian, and it involves inspiration, creativity.

"my biological mother and father...they r friends. were never married. i'm their only child together. my bio father was married before and i have two bros from him. they are half mexican. one is 6 months older than me and the other is 14 mths younger. they were taken away by their grandfather. he didn't approve. he moved them to texas when they were young and they never knew their father. the same time i met him one of my bros had found him and came and lived with him."

My parents were never married, and so I am of illegitimate birth. I have my mother's maiden name as my last name. I am indeed the only child that my parents had together. My mother was 17 years old and my father was almost 31 years old when I was born. On New Years Eve 2002 going into 2003,, I found my father in Social Security Death Record Index online. I found out he died August 1993. He lived longer than my mom suspected. She thought he OD'd when I was a baby. She hadn't heard from him since I was a 1 1/2 years old. For some reason, I thought he was still alive and even tried to find him as a teenager.

With Neptune in 3rd house, I fantasized about having half siblings that my mom didn't tell me about ,and that turned out to be true. I was watching soap operas, and so I got the idea in my head that I had siblings that my mom didn't tell me about. It didn't turn out to be fantasy. It turned out to be a reality.

"I come across as very Neptunian and people often misinterpret me."

same here

" I also just realized that my mother has a Moon - Neptune square, and her Neptune is in the 4th. She had a terrible childhood, full of domestic violence between her parents, and both were alcoholics, Neptune and substance abuse need I say more?

My mother is a recovering drug addict, alcoholic. My father was a drug addict, and that's why I never knew him. They were similar to each other as neurodivergents. Both were Neptunian types. My mom having Sun in 12th trine Neptune which also square her Venus and sesquiquadrate her Midheaven in Pisces. My father had Moon in Pisces and stationary retrograde Neptune.
My mother suffered domestic violence from both my father and stepfather. She actually has a t-square of Venus in Cancer in 2nd square the opposition of Neptune in Libra in 5th and Sedna in Aries in 11th.

"In fact my my mother's father died at 53 from liver failure from alcohol, and he also had Pisces Moon, not sure which house, but it is weird to think I have the same Sun and Moon (Leo/Pisces) as him..."

My mother's father died from suicide, but he was suffering from Hepatitis C which my mom also has and cirrhosis of the liver. He was a lifelong alcoholic. He had Moon in Pisces as well as Saturn in Pisces oppose Neptune Virgo. I share both Moon in Pisces and Saturn-Neptune opposition in common with my grandfather.

I share Moon in Pisces in common with both my father and my maternal grandfather.
This perfectly with my mom's Sun in 12th trine Neptune in 5th.

in the whole sign house system, my Neptune is in 4th

I can't help relate to both placidus house and whole sign house placements

Wow, there are some distinct similarities between self-undoing and Pisces Moon/ Neptune influences, but I think that cycle is over, were the healthy and efficient Pisces Mooners, just think of all that great potential that lies ahead!
