I just love how they explained each aspect

The Conjunction is an Aspect of 0 (or 360) degrees and is that of the circle divided by one. It is the strongest of the Aspects and creates a relationship of identity. The result is an integration of the related components, but the integration is never equal; the slower moving Planet is modified by the addition of the faster such that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Thus, the Conjunction identifies functions of being that are themselves blended and melded into unique mega-components.

The Opposition is an Aspect of 180 degrees and is that of the circle divided by two. The Aspect expresses a relationship inherent in the Signs. It is the strongest of the dissonant Aspects. The representing Planets are positioned in Signs of complementary Elements and identical mode. Complementary Elements are seen to be related formulations of the same fundamental attribute of the universe, implying the potential for transformation from one to the other. Transformation creates the potential for motion that gives direction and purpose. Thus, the Opposition identifies functions of being that provide the fundamental awareness(es) that orient the individual.

The Trine is an Aspect of 120 degrees and is that of the circle divided by three. The Aspect expresses a relationship inherent in the Signs. It is the strongest of resonant Aspects. The representing Planets are positioned in Signs of identical Elements, but different modes. Here, an Elemental archetype is being expressed in two different states (Modes) which implies, not transformation, but change. Change requires process, and process is the basis of facility. Thus, the Trine identifies functions of being that are the inherent strengths upon which one depends in one's life.

The Square is an Aspect of 90 degrees and is that of the circle divided by four. The Aspect expresses a relationship inherent in the Signs. It is the second strongest of the dissonant Aspects. The representing Planets are positioned in Signs of non-complementary Elements, but identical modes. Attributes of the environment are connected but are at cross purposes, requiring and motivating the search for an expression that is amenable to both. Thus, the Square identifies functions of being that are seen as challenges and thus provide basic drive.

The Quintile is an Aspect of 72 degrees and is that of the circle divided by five. This Aspect is not a relationship that is inherent in the Signs, and so is not a direct expression of the physical environment. By implication, therefore, it and all other such unrelated Aspects are expression of non-physical or spiritual realities. As such, the significance of division of the circle by five is spiritual; five, according to most mystical cosmologies, is the number of humanity. Thus, the Quintile identifies functions of being that are expressions of the unique grace and artistry of human creativity.

The Biquintile is an Aspect of 144 degrees and is a multiple of the Quintile. It is an extension of human creativity into the collective mode. Thus, the Biquintile identifies functions of being that are suited for involvement in group creativity.

The Sextile is an Aspect of 60 degrees and is that of the circle divided by six. The Aspect expresses a relationship inherent in the Signs. It is the second strongest of the resonant Aspects. The representing Planets are positioned in Signs of complementary Elements, but different Modes. Both transformation and change are implied, and so something new arises. The Sextile is also half of a Trine, and provides the Trine with a forum of accomplishment. Thus, the Sextile identifies functions of being that are creatively productive.

The Septile is an Aspect of 51 degrees and 26 minutes, and is that of the circle divided by seven. This Aspect is not a relationship that is inherent in the Signs, and is an expression of a spiritual reality. The number seven, according to most mystical cosmologies, is the number of spiritual responsibility, as commonly expressed by spiritual talents or skills that must have been earned. Thus, the Septile identifies functions of being that provide connection with kharma.

The Biseptile is an Aspect of 102 degrees and 51 minutes and is a multiple of the Septile. It is an extension of spiritual responsibility to include shared considerations. Thus, the Biseptile identifies functions of being that provide connection with group kharma.

The Triseptile is an Aspect of 154 degrees and 17 minutes and is a multiple of the Septile. It is an extension of spiritual responsibility to include general considerations at some appropriate level. Thus, the Triseptile identifies functions of being that provide connection with cultural or tribal kharma.

The Semisquare is an Aspect of 45 degrees and is that of the circle divided by eight. The Aspect is not a relationship that is inherent in the Signs, and is an expression of a spiritual reality. The number eight, according to most mystical cosmologies, is the number of manifestation. The Semisquare, however, is a half of a Square, and provides the actual events and occurrences that are the challenges in life. Thus, the Semisquare identifies functions of being that are involved with key or pivotal events in the life.

The Sesquadrate is an Aspect of 135 degrees and is a multiple of the Semisquare. The Aspect is not a relationship that is inherent in the Signs, and is an expression of a spiritual reality. It is a combination of the Square and the Semisquare, such that the challenges have circumstantial focus. Thus, the Sesquadrate identifies functions of being that provide trials and learning experiences.

The Novile is an Aspect of 40 degrees and is that of the circle divided by nine. The Aspect is not a relationship which is inherent in the Signs, and is an expression of a spiritual reality. The number nine, according to most mystical cosmologies, is the number of human potential, as commonly expressed by a variety of experiences of spiritual unfoldment. The way to this end is through effort and trial. Thus, the Novile identifies functions of being that provide connection with dharma.

The Binovile is an Aspect of 80 degrees and is a multiple of the Novile. It is an extension of human potential beyond the scope of the individual into that of the collective. Thus, the Binovile identifies functions of being that provide connection with fundamental human expectations.

The Trinovile is an Aspect of 120 degrees, and is the Trine.

The Quadranovile is an Aspect of 160 degrees and is a multiple of the Novile.

It is an extension of human potential beyond the scope of reality into that of potential eventuality. Thus, the Quadranovile identifies functions of being that connect with unexpected alternative possibilities.

The Decile is an Aspect of 36 degrees and is that of the circle divided by ten. The Aspect is not a relationship which is inherent in the Signs, and is an expression of a spiritual reality. The number ten has no commonly agreed significance, according to an overview of major mystical cosmologies; however, the Decile is half a Quintile and provides the fulcrum for the Quintile's creative expression. Thus, the Decile identifies functions of being that serve to provide foundations for human creativity.

The Tredecile is an Aspect of 108 degrees and is a multiple of the Decile. It is also that of the Decile and Quintile combined. It is creativity in the public context. Thus, the Tredecile identifies functions of being that provide the knack of professional artistry.

The Undecile is an Aspect of 32 degrees and 44 minutes, and is that of the circle divided by eleven. This Aspect is still under investigation, and so is not included in current interpretations. I believe it to signify functions that express what Jung called the Collective Unconsciousness.

The Semisextile is an Aspect of 30 degrees and is that of the circle divided by twelve. The Aspect expresses a relationship inherent in the Signs. The representing Planets are positioned in adjacent Signs. As the Zodiac is an archetype of orderly procedure, adjacent Signs indicate one or another type of procedural unit or step. The Semisextile is also half a Sextile and so provides the formal foundation for productivity. Thus, the Semisextile identifies functions of being that provide an operational orientation for accomplishment.

The Quincunx is an Aspect of 150 degrees and is anomalistic. It can be seen as an Opposition minus a Semisextile; a powerful awareness without the means to act effectively. It has been called the Aspect of "no relationship". This Aspect indicates the need for the indicated function to exist, but it does not develop by chance as might functions involving unAspected Planets. Thus, the Quincunx identifies functions of being that require intentional development in order to be useful.

The Aspects are a major focus of the more modern horoscope techniques, and their placement as a design in the center of the chart is a practice only decades old. As a footnote to this section, I might observe that a common practice has been to draw the Aspect pattern separately for use as a private mandala, for use as a focus of meditation on the full potential of the self.

The Quindecile, or The Fatal in the Natal, The Obsession in Progression, The Bandit in the Transit, and The Need to Be in Synastry, is an Aspect of 165 degrees and is obsessive, suggests a burning point of focus, often a place of extreme concern and effort in the life, even to the point of upheaval, disruption, and obsessive mania.

When these dynamics are not consciously focused, chaos and disruption can reign. The quindecile falling at the midpoint between a quincunx and an opposition indicates a need for both adjustment and awareness in order to effectively synthesize planetary energies and utilize this dynamic to our benefit.

Planets’ quindecile angles are shown through the physical presentation, social outreach, relationships, societal position, or professional endeavors. Planets quindecile Sun or Moon are an integral part of the personality. It is difficult for the individual to see the extent to which the drive of the aspecting planet is influencing their life.

Personal planets quindecile personal planets manifest through the dynamics of the planets involved. For instance, Mars quindecile Mercury (i.e. Jack Nicholson) creates a need to take action on ideas and information, whereas Mars quindecile Venus (i.e. Betty Ford) creates a need to take action on aesthetics or kinship.

Societal planets (Jupiter and Saturn) indicate trends of the times, and generational planets (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto) indicate movements of consciousness. When a societal or generational planet is quindecile a personal planet a person has the potential to be a leader in setting the current trends, or perhaps to “get caught up” in them (i.e. Mohandas Gandhi—Jupiter quindecile Mercury, Karl Marx—Uranus quindecile Mercury).

The outer planets reflect movements, events, and issues on societal, national, and global levels which impact our consciousness. Alignments of Uranus and Neptune reference disruption of the status quo (Uranus) within a seeking of the ideal (Neptune); Uranus and Pluto reference disruption of the status quo (Uranus) within a shift in the perspectives of consciousness (Pluto); Neptune and Pluto reference seeking the ideal (Neptune) in perspectives of consciousness (Pluto).

North Node
Planets quindecile North Node may suggest the life purpose; a thrust into public recognition and renown; or a prominent maternal relationship.

Synastry Aspects

A lot of conjunctions

There is osmosis in this relationship and you often see this in people who grow old together and start to look alike, talk alike and in many ways are the same. They will have a tendency to identify each other by roles. In some respects this can be an ideal but can also become a bit predatory or co-dependant. With this tonal quality, there is both positive and negative. Conjunctions are the foundations of the chart. It's where people agree, where there are few disputes and hence compatibility that is a true melding of energies. This represents a solid foundation that provides a base for lasting interface. So if there are plenty conjunctions, there is commonalty and communion. But too many, sets the relationship in concrete to the point where is becomes static and lacking in energy. An osmotic relationship is fraught with the danger that one of the partners can, by the strength of personality, entirely swamp the other. The risk of domination is high particularly where one person's outer planets are conjunct the others personal planets. The unfortunate side of this kind of relationship is that an issue might arise that can smash the concrete to pieces as transits trigger response mechanisms in individual natal charts and the stress is a projectile - straight into the sacred space of union.

---------------------------------------------
Plenty Oppositions

Generally speaking in today's Western marital climate, individual roles are clarified as equal. Oppositions can be very useful in illustrating distinctly individual positions in he equality. They point out potential differences that might be challenging but are aspects that lead to ways to 'meet in the middle'. However, if there are too many oppositions, individuals don't come together often enough to sustain the relationship! Positively, each identifies themselves within the relationship as separate entities. Sometimes this kind of opposition based relationship can create conflicting or challenging conditions, but it is a dynamic form of energy and one from which 'give and take' emerges as a positive outcome. Partners either agree to differ or find some measure of compromise. When oppositions are triggered by transits to one or both charts, the 'issue' that arises can often be clear-cut. Oppositions enable the individuals to respect and recognise their differences and when issues arise they will often draw together and rise to the challenge united or polarises to one point of view. With oppositions, they challenge each other to grow. And personal growth can sometimes be at the expense of the marriage, but if it is bonded with supportive aspects such as trines or sextiles, loving and liking and respect underpin it. Oppositions are not rigid, they allow for a zapping back and forth of energy, and at times there needs to be a haven for tranquillity and restoration of energy.

---------------------------------------------
Many Squares

Squares can be very energising but also very difficult in relationships because with the square there's often no solution or resolution to tensions. There seems to be a need to prove something all the time in a square relationship. This can be a crisis-ridden relationship but with each crisis there is opportunity for growth. But, growth can be blocked when every time one partner seeks confirmation in the mirror of the other they meet a brick wall or they meet with some shadow energy that reflects the un-owned negative qualities of the partner. The lack of give and take when the square predominates can be very wearing. Too many squares will take a toll somewhere; there's only so much stress a person can take! Wherever you have a square you have a potential issue that has to be integrated into the framework of the life of the relationship so that it becomes an active part of the whole. Positively this can create a great dynamic with potential for motivation and acceptance of the other's qualities, but if there are too many, it becomes burdensome. If you've ever watched a bricklayer building a house, he fills his hod with only as many bricks as he can comfortably carry. That way he is productive and the building grow. Squares are like bricks. They build walls but also create safe boundaries. Too many and they either crash down and kill an innocent passer by or they cripple the craftsman! Relationships need a few brick walls to climb in order to test the validity of the relationship. It's often through a certain level of healthy stress that we can achieve and there is potential for achievement with a good balance of squares.

---------------------------------------------
Mainly Trines

Like the grand trine, there is promise of great talent and creativity but most often it is not accessed unless it's part of a kite or gets a good kick along with a square or two. It's the same with a Trine flavoured relationship. It can be very bland. It may be lovely and light-hearted and frivolous but without issues, without passion, there is no richness. There is often a sense of one partner accumulating; staying put in life while the other becomes the social activist. In this way, they never fully interface but so tolerate each other's activities. With this relationship there's an easy, friendship based relationship, an easy come- easy- go" kind of experience with nothing to really come to grips with. A lot of trines in marriage can imply that they fell in love with an inner image of the perfect partner, - romantic Neptunian stuff. It is quite possible that they drift out of love but since they are quite comfortable, they accept the status quo. A few squares and oppositions are needed to make it more dynamic. The comfort zone in the relationship is where the trines are - here the whole relationship can become so complacent, too much comfort, fat and lazy, unmotivated. Where there are trines is where the solace is but there's silence in too many trines. Trines are a release mechanism; there is no resistance. When the trines support hard aspects in a secondary position, they are light and comforting and healing. Even when they predominate, provided there are some good solid 'hard' aspects, to motivate, trines are beneficial. Such relationships often do well in a social or material way so are reflected in a life of material comfort and social ease.

---------------------------------------------
Several Sextiles

When the grid shows a predominant number of sextiles, you have a grid that vibrates to a 6th 'harmonic'. The 6th harmonic relates to the idea of 'helping' - it occurs in a child's sixth year, when those little people first begin to want to assist in chores, and be rewarded by a parent. The seeds of relationship are set at this time. Someone who seeks out a sextile kind of energy is often seeking confirmation from the 'inner parent' about his or her usefulness. A predominance of sextiles, is probably the least harmful, it tells you the relationship 'works' because each aids the other and also rewards the other. It may not be 'passionate' but there is an innate acceptance of the others 'flaws' and a capacity to work in tandem, with roles not always defined but shared. The sextile brings a practical and balanced attitude, a realistic ease, because there is an understanding of and an awareness of tension, and a constructive, creative energy that pre-empts and often turns tensions to good effect. They are not the most exciting aspects but liking and respect come with this aspect. It enables one to live in the real world in which the other also lives. It implies that any difficulties find a working solution, a compromise and that there is a 'support' framework in place. The negative face of the sextile is that compromise can also mean one becomes subservient to the other, self effacing and taking too passive a stance. So there is also the risk of one becoming martyred to the cause of the other - until some transit comes along that triggers a rebellion! Even so, there can be a resolution.

---------------------------------------------
The "Minor" Aspects

You are unlikely to find predominance because of the orb used for the so-called "Minor" aspects. However they form an important role in assessing the grid because they operate at a less conscious, more subliminal level.

The Semisquare implies discontent.

It can illustrate a lack of trust in the relationship. There is an unwillingness to go all the way to a full blown aspects, and irritation and conflict is rarely addressed, but they seem to get half way but then back off. When semi-squares are triggered, old habits and irritations loom large and take on ridiculous proportions. What might seem a cute little habit when you are in the glister of first love becomes the straw that can break the camels back in 20 year's time and the issues just simmer along until a transit triggers them. Apparently 'good' relationship can then break under the strain of what might seem to others a trivial issue.

The Sesquisquare implies ongoing but unrecognised irritants.

This is a bit like the semi square except there might be a bit more chance of facing it. Indeed it is faced so many times as a dynamic in the relationship that it eventually becomes a reliable source of conflict in what might otherwise be a dull existence. It takes irritation and makes it full blown frustration. It can however, lead to confronting and issue at least, usually after a long period. But residual animosity tends to remain. When this aspect appears frequently in relationships grid, the partners will tend to take things to extremes to test each other.

The Quincunx is a very difficult aspect.

There are charts where this takes dominance and they are toxic relationships. Generally said to be the areas where adjustments have to be made, if one has to adjust to the point of losing focus then it is a sinister aspect. The Quincunx "swings" between a trine and opposition. There is a constant shifting of energy that can be wearing. This aspect is the stuff of the victim / perpetrator and one hopes not to find it except in small numbers. Too many and the chances of the relationship being healthy are remote. It occurs commonly in charts where one partner is alcoholic, sick, or escapes responsibility through infidelity or illness and the other takes the strain. The quincunx erodes the relationship. It is like standing talking to someone and they don't make eye contact, their eyes flick from left to right but never directly at you, you're not even sure they are listening and then you start to feel uneasy, edgy and uptight. If you've experienced that you understand how disconcerting it can be. Well, imagine that as a constant dynamic in a relationship, an uneasy, fearful feeling. It's enough to erode any relationship. It's almost like developing an allergy to each other, and can in fact give real physical symptoms. Hypochondria is part of this dynamic, the ultimate cop out, the 'escape into sickness' syndrome and you wonder who is the perpetrator and who is the victim. You never really know except that someone is carrying the load. Adjustment implies change and too many adjustments imply complete change. A few quincunxes might be fruitful for individual personal change to accommodate the needs of another, but too many are too demanding.

The Quintile is the creative, willing risk taking, playful and joyful dimension of the relationship.

If you find these there is joy to be found in the relationship. It might be through children, through work or just simply enjoyment of each other and a common involvement with arts, music etc. These people are prepared to take a few chances, and will tend to lay it all on the line to each other so there is indwelling honesty. This is where the love affair can continue into old age. It is a solar kind of energy and if it's between personal planets, they each shine and bask in each other's glow. It occurs in partnerships in artistic fields. Individually they may be mediocre but together they're dynamite. They bounce off each other, feed each other, inspire and resonate off each other. The vibration is wonderful. It brings the facet of playfulness to the relationship, a childlike quality that means there is an area, which is fun. So, of the minor aspects you can't do better than a quintile. It's the Best Friend energy that can keep a relationship alive and vital. But it goes a little further because it empowers the individuals to be creative and fruitful within the relationship.

The Septile carries both spiritual overtones and shadow undertones.

A few septiles imply spiritual bonding. There is rapport at a mental level; one intuits the thoughts of the other. There is a psychic link, a reading of minds and uniting of thoughts that is almost telepathic. However, if there's too much mental or psychic linking it can become intrusive. One might not want the other to tune in to their thoughts! Too many septiles can intrude in a sinister way and creates an environment whereby shadows come out to play.

The Novile implies the search for perfection.

It illustrates what one might expect or hope for in the relationship and may or may not find. Noviles in a Synastry highlight areas where there is a possibility of 'trap setting' dynamics because of preconditioned expectations. Like the Septile it operates like an unconscious harmonic vibration and may well have a lot to do with childhood expectations. You fall in love with an idea(l). Archetype meets archetype - the handsome prince and princess swoon! Then reality strikes and in reality things are not as expected. It can be wonderful when someone measures up to the ideal and creates an exchange whereby there is a sense of dreams coming true. But this aspect can also promote an environment of testing and trap setting. Too many of these and partners are constantly setting the other up for failure. Even when they pass a test, there's another around the corner!

The Quindecile is obsessive

The quindecile aspect within the synastry of two horoscopes, it indicates obsessive/compulsive inclinations within that relationship. When both persons have natal quindecile(s) and there are quindecile(s) through synastry of the two horoscopes, the relationship dynamics may be overwhelmingly obsessive/compulsive. This inclination will not be nearly as powerful if those involved do not have quindecile(s) within their own natal horoscopes. If person 'A'has natal quindecile(s), and person 'B' doesn’t, the obsession/compulsion within the relationship may be one-sided, with 'A' focusing on 'B'.

In a general sense, the main aspects plus a few of the main 'minor' one should give a chart with enough space for energy to move. When you use the Synastry grid, it doesn't need to be picked to pieces and examined through specific individual aspects unless there is an issue. Many of these issues will arise through contacts by transit or progression to one of the partner's natal planets and constellate and emerge, through the dynamics of the energy contacts in the relationship. The overview, the individual natal charts, and aspects involved in the 'hot spot' that is focussed by transits and progressions give a clear picture of issues and enable creative dialogue and hopefully, resolution.

for the minor aspects does anyone allow any "orb" at all? some of them are very close to EACH OTHER and it would get really tricky if you allowed even 1* for those, though when you think about how far away most bodies are from each other, being within a degree of exact should exert SOME influence?

from within a seminar talk regarding mars ..
by .. Howard Sasportas

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Audience : ..
.. What about the inconjunct between Mars and Saturn? Does it work in the same way?
( as similar to the mars-opposition-to-saturn .. which he'd just finished talking about )
Will projection come into play as well?
Howard : ..
.. Because of the inherent tension between the contrasting natures of Mars and Saturn, I would classify an inconjunct between these two planets as a major, challenging angle, which means ( as with any difficult aspect ) that projection is likely, at least until you learn better. Questions always come up about the interpretation of inconjuncts or quincunxes, so it's worth taking some time to talk about them in general. In most cases, I have found the inconjunct to be a powerful aspect, and one you should always take note of in a chart.
.. Before you ask, I am quite liberal with the orb - I give it five degrees or so. I know that if you extend it that far, you'll overlap with some minor aspect, but from my experience doing charts for people and hearing what they have to say about their lives, I'm almost certain that inconjuncts work within this range. So if you have limited them to two or three degrees, you might look at your chart again to see if you have acquired any more inconjuncts using this wider orb - you might discover a new way to understand something going in your psyche or in your life.
.. Inconjuncts have been described as "neurotic aspects", not that they make you neurotic ( although they can ) but because they operate erratically and very often in contradictory ways. Alan Oken confirms this by describing an inconjunct as a "seesaw" type of aspect, sometimes working harmoniously for you, and sometimes causing you a great deal of trouble. This makes sense since a quincunx occurs midway between a trine and opposition - hence the alternation between its trine-like positive expression and its more challenging, opposition-like effects. At times, the two planets brought together by inconjunct seem to work or combine together in a mutually beneficial way. For instance, if you have Mars inconjunct Saturn, there will be times when it will operate like a trine - you instinctively find the right balance or blend of assertion with steadiness and common sense. However, there will be other times when this same inconjunct will function more like an opposition, creating issues and tensions similar to the ones I mentioned a few minutes ago ( back in the mars-saturn-opposition talk ).
.. When a Mars-Saturn quincunx expresses itself in difficulties, your task is to adjust and refine how you blend or balance these two planets, until you get it right. A quincunx asks that you do what you can to bring its two ends together in a constructive fashion. As I said, there will be times when this happens almost automatically as if it were a trine, and there will be times when you really mess up in terms of how you bring together the two planets involved. Venus inconjunct Jupiter, for instance, can blend to give a very positive creative and expansive streak to your nature, but it also manifest as over-indulgence or make you the kind of person who swings from one extreme to another in relationship - carried away to the heights one day, and then deeply disappointed and down in the dumps the next when your beloved has failed to live up to your over-idealised expectations.
.. Many astrologers base their interpretation of inconjuncts on the natural zodiac, in which the quincunx is considered to have a Aries-Virgo - 1st-6th house flavour, or an Aries-Scorpio - 1st - 8th house flavour - Virgo and Scorpio being the two signs that are 150 degrees from Aries, and the 6th and 8th houses the two houses 150 degrees from the 1st. .. Virgo and the 6th house, and Scorpio and the 8th house, intrinsically ask for adjustment, refinement and transformation - hence the idea that the way in which you bring together the two inconjuncting planets will sometimes require adjusting, refining or transforming.
Hi Peri,
thanks a lot!
Do you have any suggestion what Sun quindecile Moon in a composite would mean?
Neither of us has that in our natal.
