If you are just starting out, the most basic way to begin is to learn your major planet placements and the signs they are in, i.e., your Sun is in Capricorn, your Moon is in Aries, Venus is in Gemini, etc, etc. And then google them. Start a file, where you copy and paste the interpretations for each of your planets. And then move on to learning the houses. What each house represents. And then if your Sun is in the 5th house, google just that. Do that for each of your planets and the house they sit in. And read all of the interpretations you find. After you have done all that, and you understand the very basics of your chart, then you move on to transits. Step by step is the best way. IP: Logged |

Basic chart interpretation: - each planet represents a part of us - Sun is our ego, Moon is our unconscious, Mercury is our mind, etc.; - the sign shows how the planets acts; - the house shows where the planets acts; - aspects between planets are how the planets' energies relates with each other; So if you have an Aries Sun in the 8th house, then you have an Aries-like ego and your ego expresses itself through the 8th house matters. And if it trines your Moon for example, then your unconscious and emotional needs are in harmony with your ego. Transits are the current positions of the planets, so that how they are aspected in your chart can show how the current energies of the universe influences you.

The interactive charts offered for free on Astro.com are a great resource for learning. Their interpretations of planets and aspects aren't the same as mine would be, but they help you see HOW you could interpret planets and aspects in a chart as a whole. They will help you learn the meanings of planets and houses and the glyphs (symbols) used in charts. Google around, and read several different interpretations of each house, planet, and aspect in general. For instance, to learn what a "trine" is, or what "Pluto" represents. Then you will start to be able to apply these general concepts to transits and natal aspects. You will be able to put them together in your own head, so when you see that transiting Pluto is conjunct your natal Venus in your 6th house, you will know what "Pluto" tends to represent, what kind of dynamic a "conjunction" is, what "Venus" is in its sign and house, and what the 6th house means. You can put it all together. As you learn, you'll find lots of strange interpretations that aren't quite right, both in books and on the internet. If you read a bunch of different interpretations and compare and contrast them, you will get a feel for which fit. It's an art and a science. IP: Logged |

Yeah I agree, sometimes, interpretations from different places might not seem complementary. The key is to understand the basic symbolism of the planet position or aspect, coz they can mean many things, but the symbolism should always be consistent.By the way, just wanted to add, that the tighter an aspect is (the degrees), the more intense the aspect is; while an aspect formed with wide degrees can be less prominent. My suggestion like the other person above is to really connect with the energy of your natal chart - like, connect those aspects to how you think, feel, love, communicate, etc.Not only study the signs your planets are in, but understand the houses, and the angles to other planets within your chart. After you get the planets and signs and houses down, then move on to the AC, IC, DC, and MC... then expand onto the asteroids that are also important. From there, I would start studying synastry between two people. Then, composites... Then, understanding transits... how the planets now are forming new aspects with respects to where the planets were at the time of your birth. Walk before you can run... start with the basics, then add the extras, and build build build! Have Fun! IP: Logged |

When I read a whole chart, I tend to look over it house by house...Starting with the house their Sun is in, I look at the action in each house (such as which sign characterizes that area of the person's life, which planets are there, how important does it seem in their chart versus the other houses). I try not to lose sight of the importance of things that may seem obvious. I see it all the time with readings online, especially synastry...sometimes the astrologer will obsess over obscure asteroid dynamics but forget something like--hey! this is a Taurus-Aquarius couple with Suns that are exactly squared! As you get to know the intricacies of astrology more, keep in mind that the basics are still important--the sign and house of your Sun and Moon. A quickie guide to the way I use angles (AC, DC, MC, IC)--I use them much more looking at transits and synastry, but in the natal: ASC=the mask you put on for the world; the way you begin things DSC=your path of connection to a romantic partner MC=your career/calling/vocational lifepath IC=your path vis a vis your home (sometimes metaphorical) and family (sometimes metaphorical) Usually, MC=father issues, IC=mother stuff, AC=the Self, self-image stuff, DC=your partner...but that can vary based on each person's lifestyle, sexuality, and family dynamics. For instance, if your parents are a same sex couple or a couple that does not enact traditional gender roles and/or traditional parent roles, you would look at each of their charts to see how to find them in your own chart. Since AC/DC and MC/IC axises are necessarily always in opposing signs, never in a tougher square or more harmonious triangle, they will always have an oppositional energy, like two people who have very different perspectives but are facing each other and having a conversation about it. Sometimes there is real tension between our AC and DC or MC and IC. For example, as a Capricorn Rising with Cancer DC, the face I present to the world is a bit chilly...but when it comes to relationships, I have gooey crab innards. I need a partner to see past my facade and nurture the sweet part. BUT, I have no planets in Capricorn, whereas my Moon, Saturn, and Venus are all in Cancer in my 7th house. So the DC part of me, the part that tenderly craves nurturing from other people, outweighs the Capricorn AC part. AND THEN, my Sun-Mercury are in Leo in the 8th house, and that Sun really shows the core of my personality, the essence of my whole being, regardless of all the action happening with my AC/DC, which is squared my Pluto. I don't use midpoints a lot when looking at natals or transits. IP: Logged |

What do you guys think of the IC representing the same sex parent and the MC representing the parent of the opp sex? Because I'm not having luck putting Mom on the IC and Dad at the top.IP: Logged |

Lucia, "For example, as a Capricorn Rising with Cancer DC, the face I present to the world is a bit chilly...but when it comes to relationships, I have gooey crab innards. I need a partner to see past my facade and nurture the sweet part."Oh god...I enjoyed reading this. My guy is a Capricorn MC and a Cancer IC, and that is him. Hands down. Also with an Aries ASC, and Libra DSC. Gooey, tender insides. And a Capricorn Moon. Everyone leans on him, draws from his strength, but no one ever nurtured his tender side. Not his mother, not his ex-wife. Every once in a while, Capricorn Moons like to know you are someone they can lean on. It's tough having to be the strong one all the time. IP: Logged | |
