I read somewhere that the sun and mercury is almost never more than 28 degrees away and so that the only major aspect they ever make is a conjunction...how true is that? does anyone have mercury further than 28 degrees away from their sun?

mercury's orbit is sometimes faster and sometimes slower than the sun. between that and its retrograde cycles, it can only be 1 or 2 signs away. never more. mercury could be semi-sextile the sun, 30 degrees, and MAYBE (not sure on this one) semi-square the sun, 45 degrees... either, those are both minor aspects.

so in a nutshell, yes. the only MAJOR aspect that can be made between the sun and mercury in a NATAL chart is a conjunction.

sidenote: there are many different theories as to how mercury's position in relationship to the sun (in front of or behind in sign and/or degree) relates to its qualities expression.

@NickiG
its a similar thing with venus as well. both are the closest planets to the sun.

@banx
the sun is how we express our individuality. how (and where by house) we shine. mercury is how we think and communicate. we all wish to find balance and congruence between the two. generally, that is called authenticity: when what you say and how you think matches with who you are and what you do.

all planets in our chart are to work for the expression and cultivation of our sun as it is the center of the SOLAR system...all planets revolve around it with each planet having its own system of moons & asteroids etc.

so how we express our Self, our individuality is definitely married to how we express ourselves verbally and how we think.

oddly enough, the charts i've seen with the tightest conjunctions between mercury and the sun have had speech issues. i'm talking less than a degree or even half a degree orb.

As I understood it, Mercury can never be more than one sign from a person's Sun sign. I think the maximum angle was 28 degrees. Example, Sun in Cancer therefore, Mercury can be in; Gemini, Cancer or Leo.

I also understood that Venus can never be more than 2 signs from a person's Sun sign I think with a maximum of 47 degrees. Example,Sun in Cancer therefore, Venus can be in; Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo or Virgo.

I'm not 100% sure but I think that Mars can be up to 180 degrees away from the Sun and theoretically in any sign regardless of a person's Sun. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

If the maximum angle is 28 then Sun will only ever Conjunct Mercury, no other major aspect.

Who here has Sun conjunct Mercury? It is one of the most common conjunctions, and yes the only aspect between Sun & Mercury. My Sun is conjunct Mercury in Leo in the 8th H. Its a terrible placement for being objective!

As far as I know, you can only have a conjunction between the sun and mercury. I have the conjunction and I haven't found it difficult to be objective at all.
