You guys ever read the kind of interpretations that tell you what you're like, and then further instruct you to mitigate those tendencies?

My question is...

If you are a particular way, should you be seeking to change it according to an astrologer's opinion, or should your manner of integration proceed from your own ownership and experience with the aspect?

Perhaps what the aspect implies about you isn't the liability it's made out to be. It would be a liability for someone else who doesn't have to deal with the energy, but for you, you own it. May as well turn it into an asset.

I have been thinking about this a lot lately too and would love to hear what people have to say about it...

No I wouldn't, unless the way I am seems to cause someone else pain, or, is really detrimental to me.

As much as I love Astrology, I don't take it too seriously. It scares me that some people do though lol.

Yes.

AG, this is such a great point, and I think it often makes a lot more sense to embrace it or turn it into an asset.

It kind of makes me think of cosmetic surgery--the choice between deciding you are beautiful the way you came naturally, versus artificially (and dangerously) changing youself to fit someone else's standard.

It's more about finding the people and activities that you love, and that suit YOU. For instance, an Aries Sun-Mars, Sag Moon, Leo Rising might not thrive in a middle management position doing data entry under a strict boss, or in a relationship with a Cancer Sun-Saturn-Moon who needs someone to respond to subtle emotional hints...that doesn't mean his qualities of being domineering, impatient, and reckless are "bad"--they might make him very well-suited to be a racecar driver or mountaineer, involved with a Sag Sun.

Also, often interpretations have a weird socioculturaln slant that's different from mine. I was reading a Vedic report recently and it was like, "Late marriage will be good, husband will have complete control over her." And then a bunch of stuff about obscure health problems and troubles with uncles. In MY social scene/lifestyle, that would not be seen as a "good" marriage.

Lots of the best things in life--the greatest romances, the greatest works of genius--don't conform at all to what society thinks is "good."

I was just reading the natal report on John Hinkley Jr on Astrotheme, and it was hilarious, because you could see how some of the "good" interpretations in there--like an intense focus on communication and devotion in love--were totally accurate, only they played out in this horrible, crazy way. (Stalking someone, and feeling a need to make a huge public statement--murder!!--to get her attention.)

"Bad" aspects can play out like that too. Like in the cookbook Bill Gates reading:

quote:
Thus, insouciance is found among your flaws: practical constraints are of no concern to you. You can have a comfortable life, but you must choose to surround yourself with persons who are endowed with the sense of reality which you are lacking.

As a matter of rule, you loathe tedious works, repetitive tasks and daily chores.

It could make someone lazy and messy, OR it could make that person unwilling to "settle" for a mundane life and staying in the confines of his expected place in society.

I agree AG.

I can easily think of assets coming from every area of my chart. In general I treat astrological interpretations as - something interesting to look at. I like seeing different perspectives and I think I can learn from that occasionally.

But at the end of the day, I make up my own mind as to how an aspect has affected me, based on my life experience.

The things I actually see as defects and want to 'work on' - are NOT at all mentioned in interpretations I've read.
Clearly - these astrologers have no clue as to what really matters to me... (which is actually not surprising, since they do not know me personally and have not walked ten miles in my shoes).

I see this actually as a bigger problem in synastry/composites...it seems like lots of people are willing to say, "No natal aspect is "good" or "bad", they're all things to work with.

But in synastry/composites, suddenly it's like, "Oh, my Mars on his YinYang means True Love" or "The Neptune in this composite means he's trying to trick me, and we're doomed." I think it's because a lot of people use synastries/composites as a "test" for the relationship to pass, rather than a way to work more constructively in real life. Like "Are we Soul Mates? Yes/No." It's dumb. But it's easy to fall into that trap.

Lucia -

quote:

That is true.. But also - there are so many shades and colours to people.
I could see a person with several planets in Aries-Sag-Leo.. as inspirational, philosophical, intelligent, great leadership skills and so forth.

I could see them as prone to depression when life is not as pretty as they would like it to be -- Such a person would strike me as an idealist.

I'm just trying to say I actually find some interpretations rude because they are written in very blunt language and they ignore sooooooooooo many shades of grey.

I think astrologers need better psychological skills and better writing skills. Perhaps they should take up creative writing classes and psychology classes - before they venture into astrology.

I agree. I think a good astrological reading can't be cookbook, it has to look at how people are manifesting their chart in their lives.

With cookbook interpretations, they should be used so we can get a flavor of the general dynamics of placements/aspects, so when we read we can do a good, big, integrative reading of the whole chart in the context of real life.

I mean, it should just be a study tool as we learn to do real readings.

The cookbook interpretations don't take into account the influences of the rest of the chart. An aspect can go multiple ways like you guys are saying, and the way it ends up going could well be determined by the culmination of the chart elsewhere.

I was reading my Jupiter square Uranus aspect earlier at astrowin.org. That's what got me thinking about this. The interp spoke something about my tendency to hop from one interest to another, and suggested that success could only be found in finding constancy in something. I've actually had long term goals that I've met, so I do have that constancy in some regard. When it comes to my more creative pursuits, though, I do like to jump between things, and my vision for my art would not be confined to just one concentration ever. Why should it?

I agree, but also I think that the entire chart, even if read very well by an amazing astrologer, only shows potential. It's only a map, not the territory.

Even DNA, a person's full genome, only shows potential...tendencies are triggered by different environmental factors.

The way a person's life plays out is unique and malleable. The chart will show potentials, that can play out in many different ways, and while we can get some potentially accurate info from a chart (like from a genome), it will NOT tell the whole story.

If a map was the territory, there would be no reason to ever go on a trip. On a map, the mountains of Japan look the same as the Andes...we just see that they are mountains. In the real world, each mountain is completely, beautifully unique. On a map, each mountain is the same.

Astrology's like that. Just a map. Sometimes an accurate one, but it gives such an incomplete picture. No reason to use it, or any taxonomic/classifying system in too simplistic a way.

I've really enjoyed reading this thread so far, as I feel there are good insights being shared here. And yes, I agree with you all.

quote:

I can relate to this. I have Jupiter conjunct Uranus (Sadge) trining my Aries Moon in the 5th (hobbies/creative pursuits), and I am hugely guilty of jumping from activity to activity. However, I've never really seen it as a bad thing. I think I drove my mother crazy as a kid because I couldn't stick to one thing, but that was probably the worst of it.

Now, as an adult, I can say that I've had tons of varied experiences and I continue to have them, and I'm proud of that fact. The activities I really enjoy, I stick to and I perfect. Everything else, I simply participate in for as long as I'm enjoying it, and then I move onto something else. I don't know how or when this became a character flaw.

In any case...

quote:

I would always go with my experience first. I only change things about myself if it's something I genuinely feel that I need to work on first.

For instance, one of my aspects is Jupiter/Uranus (1st house) squaring Sun/Venus (10th house). To put it simply, I like my unique, sometimes overblown FUN personality, and screw anyone who says any differently. Most astrologers say that the Jupiter/Uranus square to my Sun/Venus would need to be mitigated to keep me from becoming big-headed, inconstant, overly generous, and silly. Personally, I find that being the joker earns me more friends in the long run, and what's so wrong with that?

Exactly!

Why not play up an aspect that is really "us" and feels very natural?

Instead of fighting my natal tendencies, I'd rather embrace and enjoy them and try to live them out on the highest octave I can. (Although actually there are a few I really just want to change, I can't find a way to make peace with them yet. But those cookbook interpretations don't help!)
