Both Capricorns and Sagittariuses can have their Mercury in either of those signs (all Sun signs have only three possibilities for their Mercury placements). As such, if you get a good Mercury contact, there's a good chance you'll get along well. I'm a Capricorn, and my Mercury was on my last girlfriend's Sagittarian Sun. We communicated excellently. Instant rapport.

There are significant differences between the signs, however. They're not insurmountable by any means. Sagittarius wants more adventure than Capricorn typically does. Sagittarius is more open to risk taking than Capricorn typically is. Capricorn is more inclined to methodical, slow methods that achieve a goal in time, where Sagittarius will either get right to it, or alternately be depressed at the impossibility of having to wait.

From my experience, a Capricorn/Sagittarius relationship can be a true team. Both can offer insight to the other about how to think about things differently. Neither ego is threatened by the other, nor are they at cross purposes. It's a situation that can be best friends and lovers. The masculine of the sign Sagittarius brings out the masculinity of the Capricorn, and the feminine of the Capricorn brings out the sensitivity of the Sagittarius, which are things both signs seek.
