For 3000 years, astologers have recognized only 12 signs of the zodiac. Learn why one scientist wants to add another to the list of star signs.
Just released on January 13, 2011, a potential 13th zodiac sign may be introduced according to astronomer from Minnesota, Parke Kunkle, who studies the earth’s positioning in its orbit and orientation with the sun. For over 3000 years, those who study astrology have practiced with the idea that there are 12 zodiac signs which correspond to 12 different periods during the year. Because of a change in the earth’s orientation in its orbit, the planets are realigned, necessitating the addition of the 13th sign. IP: Logged |

What is Ophiucus? Ophiucus is an astrological sign sometimes referred to as the 13th sign. Also known as the Serpentarius sign, the 13th sign has been known to exist for quite some time, but has not been recognized as a true sign of the zodiac. With new scientific discoveries of the earth’s current positioning, it remains to be seen whether those that practice astrology will accept the sign into its current group of twelve.Which sign of the Zodiac? The new sign, Ophiucus, will fall between Scorpio and Sagittarius. All of the date ranges for the original zodiac time periods will also readjust to compensate for the new earth alignment position. In order to figure out which sign now corresponds to a particular birth date if the changes become accepted by the astrologic community, check for the birth date in the new ranges. For most, subtracting back one sign will bring the user to their new zodiac location. New Zodiac Signs Chart 2011 is given below:Capricorn: January 20 to February 16 Aquarius: February 16 to March 11 Pisces: March 11 to April 18. Aries: April 18 to May 13 Taurus: May 13 to June 21. Gemini: June 21 to July 20 Cancer: July 20 to August 10 Leo: August 10 to September 16 Virgo: September 16 to October 30 Libra: October 30 to November 23 Scorpio: November 23 to November 29 Ophiuchus: November 29 to December 17 Sagittarius: December 17 to January 20 There are some hot debates which are: 1) This change will affect only those born after 2009 2) There will be no influence of change in western world 3) Earth’s movement doesnot determine Astrological signs 4) 12 Months relate to 12 Zodiacs and adding 13th one means 13th month must be added too. The biggest questions remains that “Can today’s Science challenge or change the ever long belief’s that has roots from centuries?” and “Will people ever accept this new zodiac signs?” This addition of Ophiuchus does alter the previous dates of the horoscope; however, since your zodiac sign is determined by the position of the stars on the day you were born, your sign will remain the same. Ophiuchus did not enter the celestial path until 2009, so only babies born from 2009 on will have a new set of zodiac signs! Your baby could, in fact, be an Ophiuchus! IP: Logged |

Ophiuchus: Who are you & Where did you come from? Now that we know what are the new zodiac signs, let us read more on the new entry - Ophiuchus. According to lore, the first doctor in the entire history was Imhotep. The new zodiac sign of Ophiuchus is based on his story. So, what was his story? Also known as Asklepios by the Greeks, the formation of this zodiac is completely based on him. This is what lore tells us. Imhotep was nearly attacked by a snake once. Just when the snake tried to attack, Imhotep put it to death. After this snake had fallen dead, another snake entered the room. This snake had a herb in its mouth. With this magical herb, he revived the dead snake. Imhotep started his medical practice with the use of the same magical herb. Now, with the help of this herb he could reverse death and the entire mankind would be immortal. The Gods did not wish the same. Death had its own place and still does, doesn't it? So it is said that Zeus, for this reason, killed Imhotep. However, a place was given to Imhotep in the stars so as to honor him and the work he did as a doctor. The symbol or sign that represents Imhotep is a human holding the Asclepius rod with two intertwined snakes. For this very reason, this new zodiac sign is also known as Serpentarius. In Greek, Ophiuchus stands for 'serpent' and 'holding'.

Astrologers have gathered together a series of traits that would match such a person, including: •Seeker of peace and wisdom
•Attractor of good luck and jealousy •Interpreter of dreams •One who reaches for the stars •Wearer of plaid (this one is oddly specific) * Many people are envious of the Ophiuchan as he/she progresses well throughout life. * A seeker of wisdom and knowledge * A flamboyant dressing sense, favouring bright colours. * Authority looks upon him/her well * Would make a great architect or builder * Number 12 is the lucky number. * Will have a big family but will leave home at an early age

Astrologers have known about it for years. They've chosen not to include it deliberately. If you've noticed, zodiac signs have a very regimented system: 6 masculine, 6 feminine, 3 air, water, earth and fire, 4 cardinal, fixed and mutable. Adding a 13th sign would throw it out of balance. This whole "new sign" thing cropped up when that idiot scientist (who knew nothing whatsoever about astrology) tried to say THE ZODIAC IS OFF BY A FEW DEGREES!!! a few months ago. Every few years, I read about it on astrology forums. It's always the same. Nothing changes. IP: Logged |

I find it ironic that that the Chinese Zodiac also has a legend story about a 13th animal that didn't make it in. The CatThis link tells the legend http://www.allchinanet.com/chinese_culture/chinese_zodiac_legend.shtml But lately every Chinese resteraunt I go to has a cat idols. And I'm thinking wtf. THIS IS NOT NEW. It has been known of for at least two thousand years. quote: Ophiuchus is a large constellation located around the celestial equator. Its name is from the Greek Ὀφιοῦχος "serpent-bearer", and it is commonly represented as a man grasping the snake that is represented by the constellation Serpens. Ophiuchus was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd-century CE astronomer Ptolemy, and it remains one of the 88 modern constellations. It was formerly referred to as Serpentarius (English pronunciation: /ˌsɜrpənˈtɛəriəs/; also Anguitenens), a Latin word meaning the same as its current name.
