Hi,

Am trying to interpret a friend's chart, as a birthday gift and so I'm copying bits from various astrology sites to put in to the report. (Obv I will make it clear that it is not my own work, and will give the appropriate credits)

He has Mercury in Aries, and Mars in Cancer. The two descriptions seem to completely contradict each other and I'm finding it hard to put it into the report without it making it sound unconvincing. Help!!

He is a Taurus Sun, very typical.

Here's the Merc in Aries desc, and following that is the Mars in Cancer desc...

Mercury in Aries.
You are outspoken and direct in speech and actions. Your thoughts are original and filled with enthusiasm and great energy. You love a good argument or debate and like to compete and strategize with your mind. You say what you mean and don't pull any punches. You are opinionated and love to share those opinions, even if not asked to do so. You love controversy and might need to develop a little more tact in how you express your own thoughts. Your mind is restless and filled with much nervous energy. It is hard for you to sit still. You always have to be busy, especially with your hands. Mechanical ability may be present. Your thoughts and words are quick and impulsive and you may at times suffer from foot-in-mouth disease. A lack of patience and concentration in carrying out your plans may be evident. Great wit and an entertaining personality help make you popular. You don't like to be told how to do things and want the freedom to do things your own way. There never seems to be enough time to do all the things you have on your mind. You may be quick-tempered, but hardly ever carry a grudge. You get over things quickly, then move on.

Mars in Cancer
You avoid direct confrontations with others, preferring to side-step issues or attack them indirectly. Aggressive, competitive behavior makes you uncomfortable. Your ego drive is not very strong and you are not especially ambitious or eager to push your way to the top. Inner satisfaction is more important to you. You may feel inadequate in situations that call for strong, forceful action. But, when you feel your loved ones or your family or anyone you really care about is being threatened, then you will fight and defend with all the tenacity in the world. That brings out the very strong protective side in you. Impulse and instinct take over and you will battle until the end, if needed. Your goals and actions tend to center around your family and loved ones and they are very personal. Great sacrifices can be made for them, even though they may be in the wrong. Being sensitive to stress, you do not handle high-pressure, competitive situations very well. You can be very touchy, moody, irritable and difficult to be around when there are many demands or tensions at work. Your energy level is not constant and is very dependent on your emotional state at the time, especially as regards your emotional harmony or discord at home. You should avoid eating when emotionally upset as this plays havoc with your digestive system. You are hard-working, sympathetic, moody, defensive, tenacious, intuitive, instinctive, sensitive, and perhaps over-emotional. Control of your emotions is important to your health and well-being.

Anyone, please help me - I haven't got long to get this done now, we're seeing him tomorrow or Monday!

Thank you so much in advance!
Love Rachel x

Good idea, Amowls. Here is the full natal chart:

Mercury descriptions just seem so 'off'. This guy really is a classic Taurus, is not quick thinking at all, doesn't particularly argue much, but he is so obstinate and can never ever do something unless he thought of it first lol. He really isn't in to debating; if anything he'll nod and 'mmm' until he makes you think you've got your point across, but then dismiss what you've said and do it his way anyway.

(All that said, he is a sweet and funny guy, lol)

Thanks
Rachel x

You just described his mercury when you said he'll just do things his own way. I've noticed mercury in aries likes to interrupt people a lot.

His mercury is right on the cusp of taurus/aries. I'd look into the description of mercury in taurus and kind of combine the two.

I have elements of my chart that disagree with eachother. You just have to blend them all and look at the whole picture for the actual dynamic. This is why most astrologers look down on the sun sign stereotypes and compatibilities as there is so much more going on in the natal chart.

The problem you're encountering is where I tend to dislike reports. They make it sound so static whereas a natal chart is fluid and dynamic.. Different people have mars sq pluto at different orbs or intensities. Things can be on a cusp. One planet in one sign or in a certain aspect will diminish the influence of something else..

Cancers are so funny (his moon). And while he has this in wider orb, venus trine moon is a very charming aspect combined with jupiter trine moon (another good aspect). My friend with a leo midheaven is -always- entertaining people too.

Thanks littlecloud and mochai!

He is definitely more like Mercury in Taurus.

Any idea how I could deal with this in presenting the chart and interpretation in a document. He knows I'm not even half expert at Astrology so I'm going to leave the headings in (i.e. Jupiter in Moon etc) rather than have it all as one narrative. With the Mercury in Aries not being correct at all, should I include it as-is, and know its wrong, or put the Taurus description in its place, or put both?

Thanks so much,
Rachel x

You could write something like this, paraphrase and add your own spin, or copy and paste,

"Your Mercury is in Aries in the 7th house conjunct your DSC. You may actively seek (or easily attract) partners who are single-minded in their pursuits. You appreciate their incisive intellects and would like to acquire these traits in yourself, for example to be more direct in your speech. Sometimes this aspect may cause you to feel as if others are being unnecessarily aggressive in the verbal tone that they use with you; this is an indication that you would be suited to speak up more for yourself. Your ideas and opinions do matter, and once you become more comfortable making yourself heard in a strong way many of these uncomfortable aspects will disappear. You may attract to be attracted to partners who are younger or who possess a youthful flair. Athletic, sporty, assertive people may hold a special allure."

It's not much but it may help more in understanding since it combines merc, aries, dsc.

And here's something for Mars,

"Your Mars is in Cancer conjunct Saturn. Mars in Cancer can be a very uncomfortable position. On the one hand, you desire to protect and defend your family and those you place emotional security in to a great extent. That is a positive. On another, you may be so hesitant in bringing up issues that make you upset because of the fear of losing those closest to you; you are thus wary of exhibiting any possibly overtly aggressive feelings. Your anger deserves an outlet just like anyone else; yours can be passive-aggressive in an indirect attempt to make your feelings heard. In the long run this will not serve you or the people you care for. Learn to calmly assert yourself and you will lose the fear of alienating those close to you. You have an amazing drive for perseverance; once you get started on something few will be able to stop you. However, you may drive yourself too hard to the point of exhaustion. When it comes time to start again you may feel blocked by imagined obstacles. Again, the answer is to moderate yourself and calmly keep going. You will feel blocked, but the obstacles can be pulled through using sustained effort and proper self-assertion."

And it's very common for chart factors to contradict each other, so you can actually keep the interps you got online and just add in that contradictions reflect complexity in the character.
