It's praised as the basis of compatibility. Has that been true in your scase? Have you had sucessful long-term relationships with no aspects between these planets?

Looking back on it, I have had very few relationships with any sun/moon or even moon/moon aspects. Only one, to someone I was engaged with: my sun square his moon, and our moons wide-orb conjunct. Of course, there's probably a reason none of my past relationships worked out.

What have your experiences been? Is having at least one sun/moon aspect important for compatibility? Is it enough just to have these planets in compatible signs?

yeah, i'm thinking lately having them in compatible signs is enough...parallels seem to be ok here too. I've felt great things for people whose sun conjuncted my moon and vice versa, but it really has nothing to do with cementing a relationship imo.

I've got a pretty intense connection with my boyfriend, his Moon is exactly sextile my Sun. Also Moon-Mars aspects are potent in synastry. His Moon is opposite my Mars and his Mars is sqaure my Moon, so its a double whammy, plus my Mars is conjunct his Venus on the IC, and the list goes on...

If the aspect is harmonious, Sun/Moon contacts feel good. And a conjunction gives a couple a lot in common.

No I haven't. The ones that have worked best for me are:

Scorpio Moon sextile my Capricorn Moon
Leo Sun trine my Aries Sun
Leo Moon trine my Sun
Taurus Sun trine my Moon

My longest relationship was with:
My Sun square his Moon (in Cap) - fairly large orb
His Sun (Libra) square my Moon (in Cap) - again large orb
Moons conjunct in Cap - closely

:edit: And I guess my first love should count because this lasted years but it was very stormy:

Our Moons were sextile in Capricorn/Pisces, closely.
His Sun (Pisces) sextile my Moon - large orb.

I agree that it's good enough, in terms of overall compatibility - to have them in friendly signs.
But a close orb would intensify the feeling.
