in synastry, a trine is when two of the same planets are in signs o the same element right,

for example, i have mars in gemini and my partner has mars in libra,

is that trine or sextile?

and then alternately what would be a square?

"I see everything with a painful lucidity"

In Natal Astrology and Synastry - all astrology, a trine is 120 degrees. It can be slightly less or slightly more than 120 degrees so look very carefully. If both planets are slightly out of the signs, they can still be a trine - it doesn't just go by sign element, it's the amount of degrees between the planets.

A square is when planets are 90 degrees apart.
