This is something I've been really curious about. When you meet someone and you want to know their astrology info, how exactly do you go about asking when/where they were born? Do you tell them it's astrology related, or just casually sneak the question into the conversation?

I do this Cancer style. Let people feel comfortable around you, discuss whatever , then hit them with " No , you didn't, that's so... insert compliment... you must be a .... insert sign. Oh, my... insert relative.. is a ... insert sign ... as well, how cool, when are you born?" After some time start a discussion about people born at night or at daytime, for instance if someone is tired in the morning you could say " You must be a night person, are you born at night, because you know what they say people born at night are more lively at that time" and there you go!

Same as bluegrey. Most people think it's all horsesh*t anyway, so they don't really care about divulging birth times.

I just tell them why i want it and volunteer to do a chart for them, they are always pleased, even if they don't quite believe.

I think if you want to know you should tell them it is astrology related. When someone I don't know very well asks for place of birth, I immediately think that it is one of the pieces of info people can use to steal your identity (name, place of birth, mother's maiden name, etc.) and I am wary.
