Motivation, will, passion, drive, ambition, vitality. I see these keywords being applied to describe the Sun sign AND to the Mars sign. Please can someone explain how they can apply to both?

There must be a fundamental difference in the context which separates them??

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I can't quite get a firm grasp on this one.

Qualities u mentioned r common denominators for Fire,but I know that they r easily thrown around with any fire sign or planet;
Sun is about being,and Mars about acting. Sun is destination,and Mars means.

Do you mean like

Sun is "I am ... an "xyz" person",

and Mars is
"I act ... in an "xyz" way in order to express what I am."?

Sure,Mars is the engine,but expresses itself,not Sun.
Planets have a kind of autonomy;

Thanks. I think I am understanding better now. Sun is an inner function does not express itself directly, but only indirectly through the energies of the other planets?

Kind of - Sun is what I want, Moon is what I need, Venus is what I like and desire and Mars is how I go get it. Simplistically put

But wouldn't that mean that your Mars placement would be a lot more obvious than your sun placement since it is how you go to get things? Your drive and stamina?

The planets operate at different levels, and the strength of the planet counts. A Mars in Aries would "outshine" a Pisces sun, unless it's placed in the 12th for example. But a Leo sun would be more obvious than a *don't remember the detriment sign for Mars* Mars

My dad has Mars in Libra (I think this is indeed the detriment for Mars), but it's conjunct his ascendant and comes across as Aries. There are lots of things to consider, you should research dignities and debilities.

That is what I was worried about, because Mars "should" be less prominent. I was thinking maybe that Sun answers WHAT it is fundamentally that you are motivated/driven to express in your life, whereas Mars HOW you express that drive when you are trying to get what you want.
So sun is the passion that overarches everything, while Mars is more the approach you take in order to get what you want in the context of interactions with other individuals or groups. Mars is maybe then a "social" function, but Sun is an intrinsic element that exists independently of needing to interact with other people?

Imagine sb with strong Sun/Leo; They have a certain way to them-as if they feel that everything is given to them; confidence that is derived by them just being them,u know what I mean?
Mars is different,u have warriors,aquired experience,building from the bottom...
Sun isn't planet with passive(recipient) energy; but,there is something soo... At peace. Like some qualities u need not re-examining. U just know,u r that...
I think we could see sb's temperament through Sun,and temperament is sth that is innate; so,I am back to the notion above,Sun as set of qualities that r just given. Mars is worker,u need to unlock Mars' energy,u need experience. For example,u have AriesMars,and at some point in childhood u face unjustice,and u react to it,and previously u have been pretty meek.
I find it is similar story with Moon/Venus. There is point u should reach... Where Venus is ripe.

Maria i agree, I've noticed that when a person's mars placement is stronger than the sun the person gives of the vibe of their mars sign as a first impression. I dont know why but i've noticed this more in men. Maybe this has to do with the fact that Mars represents a mans love nature. My father has Mars in Libra as well but has a Sun in Leo,plus Aries rising so his feiry nature really comes out. My brother has Mars in Leo but Sun in Cancer, people always say they are intimidated by him, he has real presence, which is obiously not a cancer trait.
