I'd been told that Placidus is only the most popular house system because it had always bean more readily available than other systems...Not sure if whomever came to that conclusion took the whole sign system in consideration, but still.
I find that Placidus can be quite accurate, but prefer the topocentric system. The house cusps hardly differ from Placidus, but the calculation method is different and according to those who invented/discovered it, most accurate. I'll take their word for it, in the mean time I use it to see whether or not it is actually more accurate.
I'm not sure what its "official" name is, would have to check the astro calculation program I use, but I remember it being something with two names, no doubt named after those who found the system. Although I vaguely seem to remember there were 3 people at the basis of its calculation.
But anyway, since the house cusps don't differ much from Placidus, it seems to work for me. I've yet to see a chart where the slight difference actually results in the cusp being in another sign though.
