CHART CONFIGURATION TYPES (SHAPES) According to Myrna LofthusSPLASH The Splash: Configuration: Planets are usually in 10 or more zodiac signs, scattered throughout the chart. Interpretation: “These individuals have the capacity for a large range of universal interests. But there is a tendency to scatter their energy and ‘resources.’” Additional Information: The Splash type signifies one who incarnated to make a difference in life. This person usually stands out as one who is very versatile.
THE BUNDLE The Bundle: Configuration: Planets located in 5 consecutive zodiac signs; they are “bundled” within 5 consecutive houses or within a 120 degree span. A fairly rare configuration. Interpretation: “These individuals find that life is held to certain narrow opportunities. They are generally inhibited in comparison to someone with the splash-type chart.” The person is likely to become a specialist—studying one subject in great depth.

THE LOCOMOTIVE The Locomotive: Configuration: Planets are located in 8-9 zodiac signs and the space of 240 degrees (two trines), leaving one 120 degree space (one trine) empty. Interpretation: “These individuals have an abundance of energy and drive. The important planet (or Leading Planet) is the one which leads in counterclockwise direction. The planet, the house, and the sign it is in should be considered as an indication of the area and qualities to be developed.” Additional Information: The Leading Planet is the one leading the other 9 planets in a counterclockwise flow around the chart. Be sure to mark and study your Leading Planet if you are a Locomotive Type.

THE BOWL The Bowl: Configuration: Planets appear in 6 consecutive zodiac signs. The planets lie in any ½ of the chart or within a 180 degree space. Interpretation: “If the division is along the horizon or meridian line, a hemisphere emphasis is created and power is granted to the person. These individuals are self-contained, because they find it difficult to express themselves. Thus, they seek to assimilate information so they can teach others. The houses and signs occupied are an indication of the areas and qualities they will instinctively work on.” Leading Planet Counterclockwise is the focal point. Additional Information: The sample chart in this course’s Introduction is a good example of the Bowl Type—that Bowl is within 4 degrees of being a perfect 180 degrees Bowl Type (from the Sun on 20 Gemini in the 1st house to Jupiter on 24 Sagittarius in the 7th house). In the sample chart, the Leading Planet is Jupiter in the 7th house because it is leading the Bowl Type planets in a counterclockwise flow. Be sure to mark your Leading Planet if you are a Bowl Type. The Leading Planet is an important one to study.

THE BUCKET The Bucket: Configuration: 9 Planets will be in 6 consecutive zodiac signs in one section of the chart with 1 singleton planet in the opposite section, called the Handle of the Bucket. Interpretation: “Study the Singleton Planet—indicates the nature of soul purpose—an important direction, which should be developed according to the planet, the house, and the sign.” Additional Information: Be sure to mark your Singleton Planet if you are a Bucket Type.

THE SEE SAW The See-Saw: Configuration: The planets lie in roughly two opposing groups—ideally in groups of 5 planets each. Interpretation: “The tendency is to always consider each side of opposing views and opinions. There is great difficulty in choosing between these conflicting opinions, as they can see the validity of both sides.”

THE SPLAY The Splay: Configuration: “The planets are scattered in small groupings, at irregular points around the chart. Sometimes there is a stellum of planets or a grand trine present.” The Splay can be hard to define. Interpretation: “These individuals do not like to be regimented or to have a highly organized life.” Additional Information: I usually define a chart as a Splay when it does not fit the other types. A “stellum” = 3 or more planets in the same zodiac sign. Regardless of number of planets involved, they will all be within the 30 degree space of one zodiac sign—whether this is located in 1 or 2 houses. The Tropical Placidus Natal Chart contains uneven houses—thus the possibility of a stellum crossing house cusps. The planets within the stellum are usually conjunct--within 8 degrees of each other.

I'm a see-saw too. I like it. Indeed it makes me indecisive, Libra like, always balancing those scales, but also diplomatic and insightful. It's a mirroring type of thing. I have learned through comparing myself to others and them to me and this has increased my self-awareness and also my tolerance towards others and myself. My longest boyfriend had a bundle chart, which is supposed to be rare. Very self-centered. He only saw his point of view, I always saw two sides of every coin. This made us kind of incompatible. I got along well with other see-saws, with buckets and splashes (just a few that I can remember from the top of my head). IP: Logged |

I am definately bucket. My moon in 3rd is far from my other planets-which start in the 6th house and end in the 9th. Mostly though, there is a big emphasis on the west side. I read somewhere that this would make me an agreeable person and I guess that is true. My draconic chart says that I am a Libra, my chart is dominated by Venus, my sidereal chart is Libra dominated and I have an Asc ruled by Venus. IP: Logged |

Interesting. This is one of the first questions I had here after obtaining my chart - if there was any significance to the distribution of the planets.Turns out I am a bowl shape. Introvert extraordinaire IP: Logged |

quote: The See-Saw pattern does best in a chart that can withstand ups and downs and not despair when changes are required. You will have a harder time adjusting with a fixed T-square or grand cross than with a predominance of mutable planets which enjoy involvement with others and thrive on versatility; even the cardinal quality which loves constant action is easier than the fixed mode.
doh i have a fixed t-square. they're actually my ac-pluto, mc-moon, and dc-venus/mercury. i know gandhi has something similar though. he was persistent LOL. IP: Logged |

Mine looks like a bucket chart but I'm not completely sure. 9 planets on the right side of the axis, so one planet is a singleton on the left side. The planets in the bucket section are in 7 consecutive signs instead of 6 and not evenly distributed either but contained within 180 degrees. The handle (singleton) is positioned very low, 40 degrees away from the left side of the bucket. Is this a bucket chart?IP: Logged |
