Thank you very much :-)

It's not much of a "traditional" dream in the sense that I don't remember what happened if there was action at all. All I remember was a voice telling me something and me trying to listen to a name. I mis-spelled it at first and the voice directed me to it again. So I woke up with the correct name. And the name was "Dr. Faustus"...........
I know! LOL! I have not read this play in ages! I did not see anything related to it in the last X years. I had no reason whatsoever to bring this play in my mind. I'm 100% sure it was a message from my subconscious. Of course, it's a symbol. I have a few ideas about how it may apply in my situation but nothing concrete.
What do u think?

Well (and I'm using the Marlowe version of this story), Dr. Faustus sold his soul. He renounced divine benevolence (which might not necessarily mean *literal* divine benevolence, but could also representing the rejection of those who love you or else their comfort, protection, and aid). He literally chooses to do evil even when good reaches out to him and pleas for him not to do it. He is very determined to choose his own fate and to choose the 'dark' path. He seems pretty aware of his choice and goes into it willingly.

So, perhaps this dream might be a message not to ignore those who are good and who might be trying to help you, or else it might be a message to make the right choices in life and not to give in to temptation. It might be a message that you do have a choice and that you have to take responsibility for what you do (the part about having to write the name until you get it right, to me, makes me think of being forced to acknowledge something). The "voice" might represent someone trying to help you, someone trying to steer you on the right path.

That's just my take, though.

well yeah I know the story very well as i was a lit major in college... the voice is not someone in my real life, i had that voice before, it's my intuition... anyway, the meaning of dr faustus is easy to get but the ramifications of this in someone's case are harder to surmise of course... thanks for your ideas!

anybody else would like to vouch in? :-)

Gosh, the above sounds almost curt!
I am in a hurry to leave here so forgive me if I sounded too curt or rude! I do appreciate the responses. I have a diff view of the allegory of Dr. F.'s story... I will write more later tonight. Have a good day! :-)

according to Freud, Dr Faust is a phallic symbol representing the fact that your gynecologist turns you on when practicing his occupation.

Thanks again for your response, RP. As you noted, there can be more than one interpretations. Literature is highly ambiguous and leaves space for individual interpretations. To top it off, taking an allegory and trying to make it a symbol for one's own life, is even harder to do.

For me Dr. Faustus is like Adam who got into the "temptation" to bite from the Tree of Knowledge. When you reach a high level of reasoning, in the ancient times (and today in various religions) you are "accused" as sinful. Truth, the absolute knowledge, is supposed to be guarded by God and his chosen ones. Anyone else, especially a "mad" scientist like Dr. Faustus, have no business getting there. So, his thirst for knowledge is equated with "sin" and his decision to break all rational taboos is associated with "signing his soul to the Devil". All this is a metaphor of course, or rather an allegory.
That's my take of the story (very briefly).

Now the question I asked about this dream is how it might apply to someone's (my) life.
I know myself enough to have some ideas about this obviously and I have already meditated about the symbolism. I just wondered if anyone here has anything to say since it is quite interesting (I think).
Some people are gifted in analyzing the symbolism of dreams. :-)
