1. Use the original planet meaning to describe a feature of the 3rd house. This is called isolation. Use for when looking at a single house ruler. An example being 4th house ruler conjunct Mercury. Mercury would flavour the 4th house, which could mean you always have music (Mercury) or newspapers (Mercury) around the house.

2. Connect the two house environments to link together. This is when more than one house ruler is linked with another, not just isolating one house ruler. As you said, merger of the home and creative environment.
