So, I'm an intense debater. I've always been this way and I actually did debate in high school. I've got Mercury in Libra/8th opposite Moon in Aries. I've read descriptions about an Eighth House Mercury having a sharp tongue, and Aries placements being quick thinkers. Any who I have a twin sister and she and I tend to get into heated debates over subjects such as politics, the arts, global issues, endurance, relativism etc. I believe my debating intensity comes from my need to dig deep and get to the core of things. I enjoy debates for what they offer, alternative perspectives, incisive conclusions, and because I just really enjoy discussing things (Mercury in Libra). The only differences between my twin and I by the way are:

Me: Mars/1st House, Pluto/8th House
Twin: Mars/2nd House, Pluto/9th House
(We have identical astrological charts give or take a few different planetary house placements)

Well my twin sister isn't a fan of how heated our debates get. They're always civilized of course, we're both Libra's but they do get intense because they require us to think deeply about these issues which can be tiring. She doesn't enjoy conflict at all and neither do I except I use conflict as an opportunity to possibly reach a resolution through discussions. I enjoy intense debates even if they do leave me with a headache because I'm an analytical person, and I synthesize everything! I need to go deep in conversations and I'm always on the edge of my seat to understand or discover. To get beneath the surface, discussing things or making others think about things they either haven't thought about, don't like to think about, or don't want to reveal and vice versa. I'm trying to work on taming the investigator in me.

My question is what are your opinions on debating? Do you enjoy having intense discussions or would you rather have things be light? Do discussions deplete or energize you? Since I'm crazy about Mercury, please include those placements and any soft or hard aspects to any planets that assist in your explanations.

I love debates, discussions and sharing differing perspectives on issues. As long as it doesn't become too aggressive, or become a shouting match (or us getting *too* worked up) it'll be all in good fun!

I have Libra mercury too, in 7th house, conjuncting descendant and moon.

That's why one of my desired traits in a guy is somebody who is outspoken and opinionated (but not too argumentative of course)

Mercury square uranus, neptune and saturn.
Mercury square jupiter

I did debating back in high school too.

I have Mercury in Gemini conjunct Venus
Venus is my chart ruler and it's in the 9th house..

I love debates but I cannot stand people who come to any sort of conclusion without testing anything out. That is the height of ignorance and I don't have time to debate with people like that.

I had a vedic reading done.. it said 'she cannot be defeated in argument'.. which has proved true my entire life.

I'm a h.ell of a debater, I almost can't be beaten. Having said that I don't really like doing it. I love hearing people's opinions of stuff but I hate arguing back and forth about it, but somehow I always find myself in debates, anyway.

Astrology-wise? I have lots of Libra (4 planets, Mercury quintile Pluto. Mars in Cancer, so I've never really gotten off on arguing.

ah, so she was born first.

an 8th house Mercury is an investigative Mercury. They dig for answers and do not stop until they are satisfied with the whole story.

A ninth house Mercury is at a disadvantage, they're not as thorough as an eighth house Mercury and they're outlook is more idealized.

Me, I have a third house Mercury (Aries) and unless I'm fighting for a cause, I flit from subject to subject.

Thanks for bringing this up, i've been meaning to talk about this. Aqua mercury, sag mars, so yeah i like to debate and provoke and have heated conversations.

I had a weird instance with a good friend who let it slip when she was really drunk that she thought i was a ***** for arguing with people all the time. (i'm summmerizing but she did say ***** and arguing) She apologized immensely afterwards but still it really shocked me. I never ever thought that I was offending anybody by having thought-provoking discussions like that. Obviously I'm respectful of other peope's religious views and whatnot, but I just find small talk boring and fake, i like to dig a little deeper. I like the sharing of ideas (aqua mercury) and i like people with a vest for life and who react firey to things(sag mars). Yeah I like to provoke, but mostly tease and joke good-heartily, I'm light-hearted, i would NEVER EVER maliciously start a conversation. She's a Scorpio mercury and pisces mars, so I guess she takes everything to heart, but that's just generally the way i have fun and enjoy engaging with people.

I still really feel like she doesn't understand it, but on the otherhand she's a pisces mars and the most passive aggressive person i know. It kind of freaked me out though, and made me worry about how many other people I've hurt or offended or who think i'm being a ***** for what i thought of as teasing, having fun, and having great conversations.

I personally love seeing people all fired up, about anything really. i love seeing their fire and passion, so i like talking about interesting topics like politics, religion, etc. I am definitely open to different opinions and definitely not disrespectful, i just think life's more interesting if you don't just stay on the surface. Also, i find it mentally such a turn-on when others get as fired up as me about the world. It's a way to see the way their energy manifests. I don't debate or argue or whatever to bring anybody down, it's a way to bring their views out.

Anyways, what you were saying about your twin really reminded me of that.

I like debating - but I'm not an emotionally intense person and it makes me uncomfortable when someone gets very strongly into the debate.. and cannot detach at all. (That's my Cap Moon)

Also - I don't like words thrown in the wind... Sometimes people take debates very personally.. and they end up swearing, raising their voices etc... Eventually, no one understands what is being said anymore.. because they are all talking past each other. I can't be involved in something like that. It seems futile - like a waste of energy. My Cap Mars likes to conserve and channel energy into specific goals/pursuits. The most annoying thing for me is when I feel like I've wasted my time.

Merc in Pisces - 10th house

square Uranus

I like to talk with people who are intelligent, don't get on my nerves, and have something to really offer in conversation.

I can relate!

See... This kind of thing - Usually I'm very cold.. so people wouldn't describe me as "fired up"! But - If someone did fire me up.. at a later point in time, when I look back on things.. I would end up upset with that person - not so much because they created friction - but because they wasted my time&energy..
I feel drained by arguments. I could be doing so many other fun things in my life... It would just feel like "this person took-up an hour or two in my life... that I could've spent laughing/enjoying myself OR working and that I instead spent arguing with them". So I'd avoid them in the future.

Keen observation, she was born first . That made me laugh. And thanks for that explanation. It's true I'm the researcher and detective and she's the theoretical one who tends to answer questions with relativism. For me if I've experienced something then I'm connected to it and therefore I know enough to discuss it. If I haven't experienced something then I want to thoroughly understand it through someone else's perspective until I'm in a place to speak from experience.

In our debates she tends to talk theories when I want to talk truths. Hypothesizing is all good in fun but I need answers, it's too much mental work to just theorize.

Great answers!

Cool. I see where you're coming from. Debates are a turn on for me too...

Civilized debates though, not arguments, even with Mars in the 1st I don't like unnecessary quarrels. Sometimes when I'm having a discussion with someone I'm aware of things they're not saying and I want to know and understand what they're hiding and why they're hiding it. I can provoke a bit in debates because I don't want people to be timid with their responses. I want the horrid details, atrocious and twisted view points, biases, prejudices, everything. Nothing hidden, truthful perspectives. Thus the debates get pretty intense because we aren't talking about light things. Ah well.

I really hate intense debates. I have Mercury in Cancer, so when things get heated I start processing the emotions I'm getting and not really focusing on what's being said. My moon in Virgo doesn't like being wrong, so I like to take my time and gather my thoughts before speaking, but if things have gotten heated then I don't likely have the time I'd like to formulate my argument. So, that usually leaves me with a deer in the headlights look in my face and a really awkward silence.

Cancer Mercury in 7th
sextile Taurus Venus in 5th
trine Scorpio Saturn in 11th
Mars in Cancer in 7th

I have venus conjunct pisces in the 9th conjoined my MC.

I don't mind a good debate, just as long as the person that I'm debating is intelligent, witty and fun to banter with. I'm not afraid to go deep!

Aw Sand that doesn't sound good. Even if that tends to be the case I truly want to believe that people do change their views based on eye opening alternatives of perspective. Maybe it's me being an Air sign but my views change with the wind. I'm passionate about things and I like to dig deep but I investigate where the wind blows and make people aware of the fact that my mind is like a sculpture, it's endlessly being molded. I don't hold tight to any idea, because everything in life is transitional.

With a Mercury Aries, you'd actually be really good at debates. You have a quick mind. I had a Taurus Sun friend who had Mercury in Aries and she was calm most of the time but if you mentioned something she was passionate about a whole other side of her came out. In a good way. She was very good at debates.

@ Sand - I don't debate to try to change people's minds. far from it actually, i just like discussing life and learning about the way people think and why other people believe what they do. a conversation isn't a conversation if all the other person says is: you're right, i agree, etc. etc. it's the differences between people that are interesting and that's what makes bantering so much fun.

p.s. i don't really like the word debate it signifies something different than i mean, bantering is the closest word i can think of.

I love debating. It's a fun activity for me. I go through life looking for ways to debate with people. I find ways, find topics to debate, to get the deeper meaning of things. Some think it's instigating, some don't. I debate for my purpose of soul searching and to understand the world around me.

The thing is I don't take debates all that seriously. My ideas are ideas, my standpoints are just that, I do have a detached outlook when debating, at times I get passionate but not all the time. I think it's entertaining to see people get riled up in debates especially when something I have said got them riled up. I don't take these people seriously if at all, you know those ones that resort to personal attacks (it happens to the best of us) but people that do this all the time, the point of debating is to share ideas, my aim at debating is to dissect and see hidden meanings I did not know or could do not see, another reason why I don't take it very seriously. I think some people take my ideas to heart and there shouldn't be this need to do that. My ideas can be radical, and at times not what society accepts, it "shocks" people, but I really do not care. I like to push the envelope. For my own benefit to learn, I lack diplomacy and at times can come off as being very mean or rough onto others but that's not my intention. My ideas are mosly focussed on possibilities of a greater scale, I find Im within the intense debates when someone takes my idea and applies it on a personal level, that's when all hell breaks lose.

One thing I don't like though is when people falsify what I have said. That's one thing that ****** me off. I used to debate with this girl too, she took everything I said so personally she got red in the face kept getting up abruptly and even stormed out the room with something I said. I found her response amusing!

I have mercury in the first house in Aquarius conjuncting my sun
