I have Neptune conjunct my Sun and this happens to me too. I have to make an effort to pay attention, otherwise it's like I go blank through the whole conversation. My body and emotions totally respond appropriately to the conversation, but my mind is on cruise control. This is especially annoying at work when my boss is giving me instructions for a project. Same thing happens with reading. My eyes read each word, but if I don't make the effort to pay attention, they will just read each word to nobody. I can read entire chapters and have to go back and read them again because I forgot to pay attention to what I was reading. I can't imagine how hard this is on your Mercury. Only recently have i been bad at focusing i guess its some sort of depression thing or my anemic problem hah. I never like doing homework but i'd always get it done last minute if i had to, so i had last minute focus. But then I attributed it to that (the merc aspects) and maybe the libra. I also always want things to be perfect so it takes alot for me to get sth started (cos I don't bother until I get it just right (referring to projects/assignments etc). For example in university, when I was studying for exams, I used to lock myself up in my bedroom and never go out before I finish what I had to study. I never gave any breaks to myself because it was hard for me to concentrate again. I could never study in a crowded place like the library because I would get distracted and I find myselfdaydreaming, I wouldn't even notice how much time passed. Sometimes I can't concentrate on what the other person is saying I drift into daydreams very easily. Other than that mercury conjunct neptune makes intuitions stronger in my experience but it may be because of my pisces moon as well. IP: Logged

It is a choice. But with Merc/Nep gone bad (which was clear in my question since I was interested in the dark side,and where is dark there is also light side) it passes the realm of choice and goes straight to need,compulsion. When Mercury is in Detriment (like yours truly ), lies aren't quick or clever. Maybe someone with Mercury in Gemini conjunct Neptune was a master liar, back in the Dark Ages or whenever Neptune was in the sign of the twins... Other than lying, this aspect makes your mind passive, receptive, and impressionable. Susceptible to hypnosis. Probably prone to Freudian slips too. IP: Logged
