We all come from a mother and a father. Their influence on our characters can be seen in our charts; exactly where, however, has always been a bone of contention.

Traditionally, the 4th House (and planets found there) is said to be associated with the mother, while the 10th House (and planets found there) is said to be descriptive of the father. The two have proven to be interchangeable, however, and can vary from one chart to the next.

For example, in my chart the 4th House represents my father better, while the 10th House fits my mother. Saturn and Neptune reside in my 4th House; I had a father who was physically absent from my life and had many complexes, something traditionally associated with Saturn's influence. Even when he was there, there was always a gloomy sense and neither my brother nor I were allowed too much expression for fear of him repressing us. It was very bleak. (All very Saturn). On the other hand, he was also very self-pitying and downtrodden by life. He could not handle my emotions as a child, and it became clear to me I could easily overwhelm him by showing any emotion whatsoever--so I did not. He never held a steady job, had questionable associations with the mob, and smoked heavily. He was always disappearing. He himself is a Scorpio with Sun conjunct Neptune in the 12th House. (All very Neptunian.) Quite ironic really, as my brother has both Saturn and Neptune in his 4th House as well.

My 10th House is my mother to the T. It's ruled by Cancer and contains Chiron in Leo. I was always very attached to my mother, and due to my father's absence, she was the head honcho, the parent who called the shots and made the decisions around the house. (Common with Moon/Cancer in 10th). My mother was also very wounded by life (Chiron) and is extremely talented and show-stopping (Leo), truly charismatic, and could have fulfilled her destiny as a powerful force in some dimension of the entertainment industry had she not foolishly married my father. (This all sounds very 10th House Chiron in Leo to me.) My Chiron conjuncts her Moon/Asc. conjunction in Leo to the degree! Funny, because I always attributed my success and drive in performing arts to my mother's unfulfilled desires. She would always tell me as a child, "You're everything I ever wanted to be."

I'm interested to hear how this dynamic plays out in your charts. Where are Mom and Dad for you?

i think my 4th/10th experience is somewhat similar to yours in that i read h10 as my mothers house, h4 maybe father but that could be mother as well. i dunno! i have no planets in the 4th. it's cusp is capricorn. i have cancer mc and moon in leo h10. they're intercepted by a tiny bit so it confuses me which is the 4th/10th house cusp sometimes

I would also look at the Sun (Father) and Moon (Mom)... For example My Sun is in Sag, conj Neptune, squ Saturn and sextile Pluto. My dad wasn't completely a part of my life, always on some kind of drugs (Neptune), very controlling (Saturn) and was very Scorpion is his actions/words (Pluto). Also, my dad always moved around to different cities and states and is very educated (Sun in Sag).

I have Gemini on the Cusp of the 4th
I have Sagittarius on the Cusp of the 10th

Growing up we moved all over the world many times. I grew up in two very different and distinct cultures. Intelligence and versatility were prized in my family (Gemini 4th) and having a strong mind. It was all about using your brains and working hard through applying brilliance. To this day my family is split all over the world, and in Gemini fashion we stay communicated through emails and phone calls because we all live in our own corner of the world.

I have Sag on the Midheaven. My father was a really bad example of how a parent should be. He was very concerned with his own life and career. He was a Mad Scientist and spent more time traveling and doing his research to build his status then at home with his family, we wouldn't see him for years. He was cold and calculating and I could go on. We did travel a great deal and that might relate more to that Sag influence and I have Uranus conjunct Saturn in the 10th. My dad was quirky and authoritative, He's an Aquarius with dominant Capricorn so that's make sense.

It's interesting though because I feel like my 4th/10th house axis mirrors my personality in addition to being a subtle reflection of how I grew up. As an adult I move all the time, and I'll actually be moving again in about 6 months from the place I currently live which I moved to over 1 year ago, lol. My favorite things to do are travel to far away places, research, write and discover and that definitely relates to having Sag on the Midheaven conjunct Uranus which is my chart ruler. There ya go and I learned a little bit more about myself writing this.

Nativety Joan,
I have same MC Saggi and IC gemini and mine was complete opposite to yours. However, I do have saturn conj MC wide orb, 3planets 4th house, sun, venus, mercury all taurus had a good childhood, every comfort and gadget going. IC gemini there was always lots of coming/going around home roots as my parents were hoteliers, father chartered engineer, so both self employed, work 24/7

My Saggi MC is a qualified teacher in Adult Educ in astrology. Am trained legal secetary, hardly ever travelled as my stellium in 4th gets homesick real easy

Saturn conj MC, didn't see much of father and is retro hence, he wasn't much of a role model. My Mother is Saggi conj my MC but exactly quincunx my sun, so we never really understood what made each other tick. Father was always the bridge, but when he passed, don't have much contact...

Gem IC conjunct Saturn Venus in Cancer H4

Sag MC Jupiter Rx in H10

IC definitely represents my father with Saturn there. I never met my father, however I did find him when I was 25, but we only spoke a few times, I still never met him..

I did move around alot as a child.. I moved from all family memebers..

My mom would get the urge to move every two years.. She has a Sag Moon..

As for career wise, I work in the Travel Industry which rules Gem.. But I have a lot of space and freedom, which is Sag..

Im not a teacher.. I could never be a teacher. No patience whats so ever.

Thanks for your responses!

@sand: It looks like we both have Libra rising. I wonder where exactly your Midheaven is. Do you know what degree of Cancer it falls on? Your IC (4th House) would be directly opposite that. Moon in Leo in the 10th House sounds like a great combo! May I ask you what you do/would like to do for a living? What do you feel that combo bestows upon you? Also, Libra Ascendants, who for the most part have Cancer Midheavens, are notorious for unusually close bonds with their mothers. Can you attest to that?

@racole12: Good point about looking to the Sun and Moon for indicators of the father and mother. This is actually something I've always pondered. Sure, the sign the Moon is found in, and the aspects she makes, are said to describe the mother. On the contrary, while I definitely agree that the aspects the Sun makes denote what type of father the native will have, I don't see any correlation between the native's actual Sun sign and the father's character. For example, my Sun is in Sagittarius, but my father is the furthest thing from a Jupiterian. On the other hand, the fact that my Sun is unaspected is very telling indeed! I never established a connection with him, never wanted to, and always looked down upon him; I wanted nothing to do with my father and he never wanted much to do with me. My brother, however, has the Sun in Leo square Mars in Taurus, and also square Pluto in Scorpio. While my dad is nothing close to a Solar type, my brother is quite obsessed with my father and the two also always shared a bond; my brother also inherited his childish temper and proclivity to rages of anger (Sun connected to Mars-Pluto opp.) Funny to think two kids born to the same father could have such different perceptions of him. I wonder why the Sun sign isn't so telling of the father, while the Moon sign is quite contrarily extremely telling?!

@NativelyJoan: Great to talk things out on here, isn't it? Once it's all written out, the puzzle pieces tend to fall into place. Your description of your father fits the Saturn/Uranus in the 10th bill perfectly. I tell you, astrological correlations sometimes leave me so breathless in their accuracy. Interesting that you feel the 4th/10th axis represents your personality and simultaneously a reflection of how you grew up. The 4th House is indeed who we are at the core, which is established by our foundations or roots, so it makes a lot of sense. I have Saturn in the 4th, and though I am a diplomatic and social Libra rising with a charismatic, free-spirited and buoyant Sagittarius Sun, when push comes to shove, I am Saturnian in the EXTREME. Rigid, cold, controlling, authoritative, and emotionally disconnected. It's quite ironic, really, how I've criticized my parents for so foolishly raising me this very way, but low and behold, it's become my protocol.

@SaggiMC: I always feel the sign of Sagittarius is jipped in terms of it not being synonymous with the study of astrology. I've known many a Sag to take the subject up voraciously and have a genuine interest in it. I feel that, for astrology to be a genuine interest to someone, Sagittarius is bound to be found potently in the chart. For some reason, it seems Aquarius/Uranus and Pisces/Neptune have claimed stake over Astrology, but I beg to differ. Your Sag MC and your profession surely attest to this!

@Lioness: Again, I find that when there is a heavy Sag influence in the chart, their is the desire to learn (at a quicker rate than most), and cookbook descriptions often allude to teaching as a Sagittarian profession, but as you said, we have absolutely no patience for it! After all, there's much for to be learnt and we're learning more knowledge's sake, not to contend that we know more than others... leave that to the Capricorns and their complexes.

Many modern astrologers now consider the 4th House to represent the passive parent and the 10th to denote the dominant parent.

I can interpret my childhood from my 4th placements and my outlook on career from my 10th placements but I've never been able to figure out my parents' characteristics from my chart. It is one thing that I've never quite grasped

i'm close but i'm a 0 degree scorpio rising. my mc is in the 29th degree of cancer. ic is in 29 cap. i work for a holding company but my job has always been the same type of either marketing or forward facing interaction (tho that's more my sun in 7th for the latter) but i get that cancer mc's can do that sideways thingy with career. some days i feel i'm on the right track. some days i feel i should be doing something else. i am not setttled on a career myself and see abit of changes still. and sure! even if i am scorp rising i am a mama's boy. maybe taurus sun amplifies that. i dunno!

My sun is in Sag and my dad never wanted anything to do with me, always told me I wasn't his kid. My dad isn't jovial either. You got to look at the negative aspects of Sag too (b/c it's up to that person to choose if the want to be the positive or negative of a certain energy)... so, that's what my dad does- he always thinks the grass is greener on the other side, has wonder-lust and exaggerates EVERYTHING.
