Hi everyone, i have been studying astrology for a while now, and i have learned sooo much from all of you!!

Of course the lack of definite "rules" makes for a some frustration at times but none like the house systems for me. I started out using Placidus, but i have lately compared that chart to the Equal house system chart of a few people in my life and come to find that it was more so accurate, until i tried the WHOLE HOUSE system and that proved to be even MORE accurate.

For example, in Placidus(and in the other two for that matter) i have my sun, murcury and jupiter in the 10th but i am not ambitious AT ALL!! I have always felt like i have a spititual path to follow, perhaps insire ppl, but i could care less about a career. And i had an aha moment when my MC ended up in the 9th house (in the equal, my sun is in the 9th as well, conjunct the 10th house cusp) and my NN in the 8th, honestly the SN in the 2nd fits me to the T, almost scary accurate. My gemeni venus is intercepted in the 11th house with only a 6* trine from my aqua mars (no other air placements) and a sexile to my MC, and yet i have absolutely no problem accessing my gemeni energy whatsoever.

Also, the charts are very, very different in most of the people whose charts i have checked, besides my own (my planets didn't switch houses much)

For instance my friend who is more or less a loner has jupiter in the 11th house(but in the 12th using whole house system, which explains her spititual quest) and another friend who is quite wealthy has his jupiter in the 2nd ONLY when using the whole house system.

Also, when i started looking at the house overlays with my SO and I, my observation led me to believe that it is the planet person who feels more than the house person because my overlay to him is beyond superficial and yet, especially in the begining, he was far more attached to me than i was to him. For example, my mars falls into his 1st, 7* from the asc, my sun, mercury and jupiter in his 3rd, my venus and moon in his 5th. Our composite stellium in his 2nd. On the other hand his sun is in my 7th, his mercury and moon in my 8th, his venus in my 5th and his mars in my 10th. We do have asc opposite each other and chiron contacts but that is not nearly enough for an AQUARIUS to pass up a relationchip with a libra for a TAURUS.

In the other two house systems, my sun, mercury and jupiter are in his 4th (sun right on the cusp, as his asc squares my sun exactly), and my moon ends up on the cusp of his 6th in equal. In those houses as well in whole houses.

In my loves natal equal and whole house charts, his pisces moon moves from the first to the second. Both seem to fit him, as he can be moody when around moody people but he doesn't express his emotins in an overt way, and his finances and all kinds of security is very important to him. His NN moves from the 2nd to the 3rd, and again both seem to fit him because he craves that merging represented by the 8th house SN and he also does a lot of philosophizing but doesn't like to bother with the little details that support his theorys.

The reason this really made me go HMM is also because his ex gf hed her moon, venus, and chiron in his 7th and her sun, mercury, jupiter and mars in his 8th (they also had some yummy aspects like an exact conjunction of her eros and his venus, venus' and suns trine) and for some reason he was unattached to her, and didn't really care about their relationship, and sadly it was obvious to everyone) In the equal house system, her first stellium stays in his 7th, and the other one moves over to his 9th.

At first it made me question his sincerity and motives towards me but i am quite intuitive and he is deeply sincere, sharing himself with me to the point that that we are completely transparent with one another, and that just does not seem to represent 3rd house 'light', dare i say, energy. I have known him since high school, and i have always felt like i am very special to him from the begining (sadly due to circumstances we were not able to be together) in fact he says he has never been this way with anyone else and our relationship is sacred to him (and me as well .

Now i understand what the houses represent, and it makes sense to me that they vary in size. But it just doesn't explain certain things to me like the the whole house system seems to. I am aware that there may be aspects that may indicate a deep bond or wealth, so its possible i am simply seeing what i want to see.. And somehow identifying with descriptions for the the other placements. He has said i feel like home and he would spend nights at my place even though its not like him at all. BUT that being said, i love making everyone comfortable in my home..

My question is, have any of you experienced something simillar in regards to the house systems, especially when the placements, and houses move around a bit?

Is there a system that works consistantly for any of you?

Glaucus- if you happen to read this, you have mentioned on another post that you tried using the whole house system, yet decided to go back to Placidus.. What was the reason for that if you care to share?

I really hope to hear some experiences and suggestions for a what charts you use for synastry

I use Equal House system (where each cusp is same as Ascendant) and am a modern astrologer. Lots of newcomers come into Astrology/forums and get a free chart from astro and the default ‘house system’ used is Placidus and think that’s just the norm and all there is……..BUT that is just the tip of the iceberg. You can change the default on astro.com in Extended Chart selection to Equal house and a few others if you wish to experiment…..

Within the mainstream are placidus/equal houses (the default on astro is placidus) only difference being some planets may move from one house to another thereby altering it's interpretation and it's 'only' with research will you find which /planets 'fit you' in which houses. So my advice, do two charts, research any planets that move houses and see which you identity with - simple

Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAwGtMWl4z4

In placidus for my chart it moves my taurus stellium two whole houses, which simple is NOT me....
the difference as you have seen is that certain planets move certain houses.
Perhaps it would be helpful if you posted your chart, as I'm rather visually orientated.

“The MC, being the highest point at birth, symbolises the aims and ambitions one works towards, and, by extension, one's career potential and public image. But these areas are also 10th house matters, devised, because of that house's association with Saturn, to show precisely these areas of life. It is therefore conceptually necessary (so goes the argument) that the MC be the cusp of the 10th house. For this reason, the Equal House system has a limited following outside the UK, although it is still the commonest House system within the UK.” http://www.astrolozy.com/article19.asp http://www.aquamoonlight.co.uk/systems.html

Equal House System:
A simple, yet highly effective system, this was the method that the ancients used before the various unequal houses systems developed. The signs on the cusps then follow in order around t he wheel beginning with the rising sign. There are no intercepted signs in equal houses and therefore each sign is represented on a particular house cusp. The Equal house system does not create very large or small houses that become even more pronounced the higher the northern or southern latitudes used to calculate the chart.

“The Equal House System avoids the problem with the Placidus which results in extremely uneven houses if the native should be born in extreme northern or southern latitudes.
Each sign is fully represented on a house cusp.
Debbie Kempton Smith the author of Secrets from an StarGazer's Notebook recommends either Equal House or Koch (unequal).
Margaret Hone puts forth an excellent argument in favor of Equal House in her book, "Applied Astrology" which is why it is the default for SkyViewZone.
Jeff Mayo and the Faculty for Astrological Studies also favors this house system.” http://www.solsticepoint.com/astrologersmemorial/hone.html http://www.astrolozy.com/article19.asp http://www.aquamoonlight.co.uk/systems.html
http://www.skyviewzone.com/birthinfoforms2/housesexplained.htm http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=Z0nnE2IP7A4C&pg=PA167&dq=astrology+equal+house&as_brr=3&ei=i0iJS-PlGo3mygS89Nn8DQ&cd=2#v=onepage&q=astrology%20equal%20house&f=false

EQUAL HOUSES
“Another of the three most popular house systems is Equal houses which is just what its name implies. All the houses have the same degree on each cusp, and there are no interceptions. Equal house systems are especially useful for people born in the northernmost and southernmost latitudes, and this system is the most popular one in use outside of the United States.” http://www.esotericapublications.com/article-511.html

“Equal house system is the only system that is erected in the plane of the Earths orbit. The zodiac is erected in the plane of the Earths orbit around the Sun which comprises of a 360 degree circle that surrounds the Earth. The mid-heaven is often more, or less than ninety degrees (three signs) from the ascendant, therefore it is not often placed on the tenth house cusp, but marked where it appears in the mid-heaven according to the latitude and longitude of birth. The mid-heaven is taken as an important point; it is the point of self-mastery.” http://marianneohagan.com/house.htm

“The simplest approaches, the equal-house and whole-sign methods, merely require knowledge of the ascendant or ascending sign, and an equal division throughout the rest of the zodiac eliminates the need for any complicated calculations
Yet recent research into classical astrology has created a renewed interest in these simple techniques from a more scholarly perspective. The point of strength is that, regardless of the originating theory behind house division, in practice at least, classical astrologers tended to tie the houses to the signs, apparently concurring with Pelletier, who wrote in defence of the equal house method” http://www.skyscript.co.uk/houprob4.html

Equal House System
“The equal house system calculates the degree of the Ascendant, which is used as the cusp of the first house. Some astrologers do not like this system because it does not equate the 10th house cusp with the Midheaven (which indicates the degree that is highest in the sky above the horizon at the place of birth). However, the Midheaven can certaintly still be noted in this house system as well as any planet forming an aspect to that angle.” http://www.astrolady.com/housesystems.php

How then does an astrologer choose a house system? Well, the individual studying alone is more than likely to use Placidus Houses.
Students who study with a recognised school are usually introduced to all of the house systems, but taught to use one far more than the others. This is usually the Equal House system, which incidentally is also one the oldest one. In this house system, the twelve divisions are very much like spokes of a wheel, equally spaced at 30 degree intervals, with all houses being the same size. This is the easiest of the House systems to use, as it requires no further calculation. Once the Ascendant is known, one simply divides the rest of the chart using the Ascending degree as a starting point - so if the Ascendant is at 22 degrees Leo, this is take as the cusp of the first house, with the second house beginning at 22 degrees Virgo, the third at 22 degrees Libra and so forth.
The Equal House system is conceptually valid within today's astrological standpoint that every individual is free to become what their birth chart symbolises as their ultimate talent. The Ascendant has been shown to correspond to the way the person automatically approaches their environment - the 'persona' in Jungian terms. This person is therefore likely to approach every field of life in a specific way. A person with an Aquarius Ascendant, for example, will approach money-making and material values (2nd house) in a Pisces manner, will learn (3rd house) in an Aries manner, deal with family (4th house) in a Taurus manner and so forth.
The biggest criticism of the Equal House system concerns the position of the MC, which, using this system is more often than not the cusp of the tenth house (or any house) but rather is found within the 9th, 10th or 11th house.

Now without seeing the chart it's hard to explain why this happens!! If Jupiter is retrograde or afflicted by an outer, it will definately alter the expressions of jupiter in that house. You cannot take JUST a house position of a planet, without looking at how it's aspected.

Always remember planets are modified by signs, where they express are houses and how they express are *aspects*

If you want to post your friends chart, I would love to attempt an explanation for you....

you also need to remember *the rule* that IF a planet is within 5' of a house cusp then it is considered more effective in the next house along going anti clockwise. It's bit like standing in a doorway, focusing on the next house, one foot in the past, one foot in the future, but facing with your back to the last house....

Planets conj House cusp
“Ascendant at 15’ Libra and Jupiter 13’ Libra. That would place Jupiter in the 12th house, right? But many thoughtful astrologers would read this as Jupiter being conjunction with Ascendant, and end up reading it as bringing its action to bear in the first house, rather than in the 12th.
This same idea would apply for each and every house cusp. If the planet is IN THE SAME SIGN as the sign on the next house cusp, and close enough to be CONJUNCT WITH that next house cusp, the action of the planet will be directed into oncoming house” http://www.astrology-numerology.com/inhouses.html http://www.astrologyweekly.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14887 http://www.astrologyweekly.com/forum/showpost.php?p=125412&postcount=4
Ptolemy says the influence of the house begins to be felt 5° before the actual cusp. http://www.astrologycom.com/houses.html

“Astrologers have seen a body influencing the house it is about to enter, time and time again. All theorizing aside, the planet casting its shadow ahead works. I can speak from personal experience, as well as reading ancient texts. If you discover this as true, then the next question may be, "Just how close must a body be to a cusp before it begins to be felt in the neighboring house?"
I've seen some authors say 3 degrees. I've seen some that give 5 degrees. I have seen some that even give 8 degrees. And there may be other variations.” http://astronuts.tribe.net/thread/90c9f417-5086-4ff0-b31f-c904fe99baca

I use Equal or Koch. What I did was, I went through all the house systems. Trying to compare. I think it was 11 out of 15 that were similar to Koch. About 4 that were similar to Placidus.

I have started with Placidus, then switched to Equal, because I like it from a theoretical perspective, but eventually ended up with Placidus again.

I am relying very much on houseruler-aspects, and for some reason it seems to only work reliably with placidus, or maybe it is what I can interprete best.

I was doing some chartreadings, using both, equal and Placidus system, for some people, including someone from Sweden.
She has ASC on 15 Cancer and IC on 14 Leo - so you can imagine how ridiculously small the 1st, 2nd and 3rd house got.
Naturally I was completely convinced she would later tell me that the reading based on equal housesystem was spot on.
Turned out it was okay, but in a mediocre way.
It was the reading I did using Placidus that totally nailed it for her, in terms of her personality as well as her experiences with her parents I apparently described very accurately (and which I did not know anything about before).

I was surprised, to say the least. But I cannot ignore that and some other readings either.

Oh and just one word, even though it is alway said, Placidus is not unequal; it is just as equal in calculation than the equal system; the projection on the ecliptic is the only thing about it that looks unequal.

Equal and Placidus are based on different theoretical concepts and calculations.

Equal takes the ASC as starting point and divides the zodiac into the same amount of degrees (30 each), just like the zodiac as we know it.
AS a matter of fact our 12 sign-30 degrees each zodiac, is a mathematical simplification and does not really reflect the "starsigns", as the Sun takes different amounts of time to travel through the constellations that gave the zodiacsigns their names.
The zodiac as it is commonly used today, is actually simply a way to dissect the eccliptic in equal pieces to locate the planets easier on their way around the Sun.
And it is showing an idealised travelling of the Sun through these sections (well, of course it is not the Sun that travels, but from earth it looks like it would).

The signs are relating to a YEAR (as the Sun takes as long to move through the whole zodiac).

PLACIDUS is transferring this idea onto the houses, which now relate to a DAY. He takes the time the ascending degree takes to travel through the whole zodiac and dissects this time into 12 equal segements / timespans; and for every 12th of the whole day (so for every cusp of a house) he calculates a rising sign. So every of the Placidian housecusps is calculated the exact same way as the ASC itself and therefore in the Placidian system are highly sensitive points.

Everyone has to find their own way, that is true; but like RP with the whole sign system, I won´t analyze a chart with any other housesystem than Topocentric, Placidus or equal.

Having said all of that, I actually prefer the topocentric housesystem, but up to the polar circle it gives similiar cusps as Placidus.

I recommend Ralph William Holden`s book on the various housesystems for study (after discussing and comparing he recommends equal system).

Thank you everyone for your input, i will definitely take my time trying out different types of charts.

I would like to share something else. When i was a little more than 9 months, my mom gave me honey and i had a super severe allergic reaction to it and the skin on my FACE all came off and of course rashes everywhere else on the body. After that reaction to the honey, i became allergic to absolutely everything except potatoes that were soaked in water for days and then mashed, but even i had adverse reactions to my mothers breast milk. I was hospitalized for months and my system essentially had to restart so to speak.

Looking at my placidus and whole house charts, my saturn, uranus and neptune are in my 6th house, so no surprise as to why i got sick. Now, my asc is 2.5 degrees leo, so that places my saturn and uranus just outside my 6th with saturn cunjunct the cusp.

I was looking today and i realized that uranus was exactly on the cusp of the 6th when i got sick and my MC is squaring transiting naptune almost exactly and transiting saturn is now 2 degrees away my natal neptune. Also, transiting chiron is exactly conjunct my natal moon (of course my mom was absolutely heart broken) and transiting mars had just passed over my natal sun and mercury and was conjunct the 10th house cusp exactly and making an exact square to my asc of course.

I was shocked to discover all of that with the equal house system. AND there is another experience i would like to share with all of you.. On nov 2 2010, i obtained a restraining order against my husband of 5 over years. On this day, transiting saturn was exactly conjunct my IC, and venus was conjunct the 4th house cusp, opposing my sun and mercury. The sun was conjunct my natal pluto (emphasizing my natal pluto inconjunct MC). Then the transiting neptune that was exactly conjunct the transiting chiron, was making an exact trine to my natal chiron (that is exactly conjunct my natal moon-venus midpoint)and im not sure if this should be considered but transiting pluto (3 degrees) was conjunct with the transiting NN at 4 degrees and making an opposition to my natal moon at 2 degrees (but again this seems irrelevant to tat day).

Anyway i found all of that fascinating especially because i was leaning towards the whole house system and not the equal one..

Not that im saying i will stick with it, but i will definitely keep an eye out for transits to those cusps!

Let me know if anyone would like to see the charts posted for those two events. Thank you for reading and i would love to hear some feedback

Oh and i realize that i am stating the obvious, but it seems that not only were the cusps of the event representing houses were involved, but also the MC/IC (that is run through my 3rd and 9th house in the equal house chart) that is what really got my attention. Besides the fact that i absolutely feel it truly belongs there instead of in my packed 10th house, because as i said, i am not ambitious what so ever. Not to say that i don't plan on being of service and making a little impact on the world. Further more, i identify quite a bit with descriptions of uranus in the 5th and 6th. Also, because its my 7th house ruler and i have met all significant love interests at school (though there have only been 3 so far .

Adonis,

I find this a good approach to see if the housecusps of a housesystem were triggered during meaningful events.
Even though the interpretation is still subjective, it is not as subjective as "using" the perception of ourselves as validation / verification.
Also, one problem may be that our understanding of the meaning of houses is not complete.
For example: the ambition of the 10th house is only one possible manifestation of planets there, but definitely not the only one.

If you look at events and their transits / progressions to housecusps, I would formulate a hypothesis, what planets and houses you expect to play a role in this event, BEFORE checking them. Of course this demands a certain knowledge about the functioning of the planets and houses, but I guess most here have this knowledge.

I absolutely agree, and while there was quite a lot going on in those two events, my marriage chart and my daughters chart overlay doesn't reveal anything of importance, rather planet conjunctions (sun-merc to natal venus on wedding day etc.). So back to research

Equal and whole house both move the MC/Ic axis into different houses. In placidus your Saturn Uranus look to be within 5' of 6th house cusp, so please read article about them being interpreted in 6th abover...

You indeed do rock SaggiMC!! Thank you for your insight and links, i found them very helpful and i will stick to the equal house system, somehow it comes together and just makes sense to me, aside from being straightforward and simple

I was checking for transits to housecusps at certain events in my life:

I. My paternal grandfather`s death:

Placidus:
Tr Neptune conjunct 2nd house cusp exactly; Tr Saturn also conjunct 2nd house cusp

Equal:
Tr Uranus conjunct 2nd house cusp

-interestingly in derived houses the 2nd house signifies (among other things) the death of the paternal grandfather (using 10th house for father).

He had been very sick, so his death did not come as a surprise.

II. An accident which forced me to lay still for quite some time and rest my knee, and during this time I was experiencing a spiritual awakening and for the first time came across the idea of twinflames / soulmates

Placidus:
Tr Chiron conjunct 8th house cusp exact

Equal:
nothing

III. I was meditating during this time, and was having my very first and intense past life recall; also it was a time marked by deep fear and mysterious things happening, visions and the like; today i think I was simply overwhelmed with all these images that were coming at me or coming up from inside of me. My whole valuesystem changed overnight.

Placidus:
Tr Uranus conjunct 2nd house cusp
Tr Venus and Tr Pluto conjunct 12th house cusp exact!

Equal:
Tr Chiron conjunct 9th housecusp

IV. got my first job, where I still am currently; and it seemed a big lucky surprise for me. At least I did not expect it to work out as smoothly as it did.

Placidus:
Jupiter conjunct 10th house cusp

Equal:
Jupiter conjunct 11th house cusp

V. my entry into the internet-world; at the same time a complete reawakening of my spirituality, faith and basically the beginning of one of the craziest, changing, funniest and sunniest times in my life.
I stumbled across my first forum, and was my first connection with mass-communication,

Placidus:
Tr Sun, Mercury and URanus conjunct my 3rd house cusp exact

Equal:
Tr Neptune conjunct my 3rd house cusp

VI. Met a long lasting crush of mine, a singer, and actually had a chat with him; and it was a very unusual, strange, amusing, funny, irrational and happy occasion. Up to the moment I said Hello, I didn`t know that I actualy would speak to him. Completely unplanned.

Placidus:
Tr Uranus conjunct 3rd house cusp exact

Equal:
Tr Chiron conjunct 2nd house cusp
Tr Jupiter conjunct 8th house cusp

Those are incredible transit finds Ceridwen. That system really works for you.

I broke things off with someone who i love deeply today and for me, there is t-chiron (and moon was exactly conjunct it when i decided it had to end, it was somewhat sudden for me) exactly conjunct 8th house cusp and t-uranus the 9th, t-sun conjunct my dsc and t-jupiter conjunct the 10th.

Thats all in the equal house system and nothing except the sun conjunct dsc using Placidus..

I don't understand how its possible, i am getting a little confused.

Interestingly as well, after breaking it off with my ex, i spent the day with a friend i met a while back and it was the first time we reconnected in years and we talked about astrology as well.

Her and i have opposing asc's (so does my ex and i) so naturally our cusps are somewhat aligned and again, there are no transits to our cusps with Placidus houses.

In equal, t-uranus is conjunct the 3rd, chiron her second, and jupiter the 4th, we truly feel like family (always have) and we were so glad to re-connect again. This is a start of a new life for her and i and hopefully my ex as well.

Adonis,

I have ignored all those events in which there were transits to the ASC or DESC as those would appear in both systems. There were some events I left out because of that, like when my maternal grandfather was having a stroke which changed all our lives, Tr Pluto was conjunct my ASC by 0°02! Or when I was having a very lovely encounter, Tr Jupiter was conjunct my DESC.

But yes, it`s interesting. I agree.

Like Ceridwen I use Placidus….and am quite impressed with it so far…

Here’s an interesting little tid bit I’d like to add…. I guess my favorite topic in astrology is the dynamics of romantic attraction, (especially concerning house ruler synastry) ….and one of the things that I’ve noticed in support of Placidus concerns what is revealed by the 5th house cusp using this house system…

As we know, the 5th house is concerned with what attracts us initially… and is related to courtship, romance, infatuation….and just that feeling of being ‘in love’ or impressed with someone…

In Equal House, and Whole Sign house systems the 5th house is always ruled by the next trining sign after the Asc…Taurus rising always has Virgo on the 5th, Aries rising always has Leo on the 5th, Gemini rising always has Libra on the 5th… and so on…

However, in the Placidus system sometimes the 5th house cusp slips into the next sign along, or the previous sign before, the next sign to trine the Asc…

An Aquarius rising can have Cancer instead of Gemini on the 5th, a Leo rising can have Capricorn instead of Sagittarius on the 5th, A Taurus rising may have Leo instead of Virgo on the 5th…

Now here’s the interesting part…..I’ve noticed that most people seem to resonate with their 5th house cusp, and ruler, according to the Placidus system rather then Equal and Whole Sign….meaning that if the 5th house cusp changes to another sign in the Placidus system (say a Virgo rising has a Sagittarius 5th house cusp instead of a Capricorn one by Placidus)….then this new 5th house by Placidus tends to more reliably predict a strong part of our romantic type, then the 5th by Equal or Whole Sign… Now, this is just form observing people around me and celebrities and such… but it really does seem to work!

I’ll admit it’s possible that all the house systems ’work’… but just in different ways….and if this is the case, Placidus seems to function especially well in relation to romantic taste, and house ruler synastry….

So if your really interested in what excites you or someone else on a romantic level…. Check out the 5th house cusp and ruler according to Placidus…

LotusWhite,

the cusp of the 5th house is actually my strongest (subjective) argument for the use of Placidus in my chart. I know, I know it is subjective, but in Placidus my 5th house cusp is on 1 Taurus, with Venus in Capricorn square Pluto, and that simply makes more sense than 5th house cusp on 7 Aries, with mars in Sagittarius conjunct Neptune.
Especially given this ridiculous attraction I have to Capricorns. And I am not talking about a personal compatibility here, but simply chemistry and sparks. For personal compatibility I actually do have a strong inclinations to men with Sag placements. But this is not neccessarily very romantic / erotic.

I do agree that there is truth in everything! Thank you for sharing your observations Lotis White and Ceridwen. I will be keeping track of important events in my life and try to figure out if there is a system that works somewhat consistently for me

I can relate to that. my first husband had his mars in scorp and that is my Placidus cusp. And now i am spending time with a scorpio sun and venus and i am attracted to him. That being said, i had one other ex with a sagg venus, my 5th house cusp in equal, and i did feel i was more so compatible with him.

Have you had the same experiences in planet placements in synastry as well? As far as all the houses go.
