I understand that fixed is set in a place and mutable can easily adapt and change but i don't understand what cardinal does. All i think of is 'the leader' or 'ruler'. But i don't feel that's a good enough description. Is it a combination of both fixed and mutable energies?? Define cardinal energy and how it works.

Mutable: "Ready, Set...Oh, look! A bird!"

Fixed: "Ready, Set...set...seeeeeeet..."

Cardinal: "Ready! GO! Set!"
or perhaps, "GO! Ready, set!"

Cardinal signs are the movers and shakers of the zodiac. They're the initiators, the instigators, it's the reason why they get the title of bossy. They are the self starters, the go-getters, the doers. Just think of the most enthusiastic go getter of all Aries. They want to be number 1, ahead of the pack, the first one out of the gate. For Cardinal Signs it's about initiating projects, making things happen, not necessarily sustaining them to fruition but initiating them. Without cardinal signs fixed signs would continue to do the same thing and resist change and mutable signs wouldn't have any new inventive plans or ideas to adapt to. Cardinal signs are the innovators, the initiators, they get the ball rolling. Cardinal signs and fixed signs tend to but heads the most because cardinal signs want to go after things and create change as opposed to fixed signs who are content with the way things are and would rather the world change around them without having to initiate change themselves.

Libra Sun here with 5 cardinal sign planets, 4 cardinal personal planets.

@Mockingbird good one!

Cardinal would probably be gone after the "ready". At least this one might be. I have a tendency to try something, and *then* read the instructions properly.

I'm all for reading instructions. But I only got a fixed in pluto, everything else is mostly cardinal?

Isn't cardinal adaptable, but persistent at the same time. Not stuck like fixed signs, but not as easily distracted and bored as mutable.

I think using the seasons works best to answer this. You have the beginning of a season, the middle or the heart of the season, and then you have the end, when it's weakening. That's how cardinal, fixed, and mutable signs work. Cardinal signs are at the forefront of the seasons, they're like the spring board, the going into the seasons. Fixed signs are at the heart of the season, when it's at it's most whatever-weather-or-temperature is going on. Mutable signs are as the season is going out and a new season is on the horizon. (it's usually when you get a glimpse of the season that's coming, it's why mutable signs are considered the flexible signs)
ex:
Spring starts with Cardinal Aries, the coming out of the winter and diving into spring, the middle of spring is Taurus, when the flowers bloom (April showers bring may flowers. Taurus is from end half of April through the beginning half of May), and the season ends with Mutable Gemini as Spring is getting even warmer and ending, going into the summer season, to start with Fixed sign, Cancer, and so forth.
