What exactly is the purpose of this planet, meaning in what ways does its energies manifest? I feel like with all of the personal planets preceding it, their roles are really quite clear! Not so with Jupiter. Does it play a major or minor part in synastry? Finally, is it a personal or a universal planet? It seems almost like neither to me.

The personal planets end with Mars. Jupiter is somewhat generational. It is the great benefic (Venus is the lesser benefic). It symbolizes growth, prosperity, morality, expansion, joviality, etc.

It manifests depending on where it's placed , the sign & the house that it rules. It's where you can be naturally lucky & seek expansion, where you find the good times & what brings you renewed faith & hope in life. In synastry it can be a forgiving & tolerant influence in good aspect or be indulgent in hard aspect. Jupiter negative in synastry can also be reflective of 2 people who have different basic religious/philosophical views on life. Some things happen in life & on the surface they look horrible but then you regroup & see what opportunities it brought your way. That can also be Jupiter. It gives you a new lease on life. Jupiter completes a cycle roughly once every 12 years so look at when you had your Jupiter returns to get more info on how it has affected you & how you might experience its effects in the future

Also in solar arcs, look at what Jup is conj. It may signal a new development in that area & the adage be careful what you wish for comes to mind. Jupiter rules excess. Whatever Jup is touching you have to take it easy with unless you can handle all of the potential ramifications that it could bring But Jupiter to Venus isn't so bad Great for popularity and for finding admirers.
