So way back when Horary was being done in the early days... 3 meant short journeys and 9 long journeys... distance was a factor... but now with airplanes... is distance that much of a factor? I can go to a whole other country in a matter of minutes... I can go to another continent in a couple of hours... I can do what was probably a two week boat trip in a few hours... So these days, does it make more sense to think of H3 as a journey where you will return home in a few days or maybe less than a month, and H9 a long journey where you will be gone longer than a month? Just not sure that making distance a factor makes sense in modern times. IP: Logged |

Another evolving matter, that is what i like about astrology, and sometimes not, but anyway, what i do is 3rd house for close to home, 9th house, far away, regardless how short or how long it takes you, so basically, for foreign i use 9, the next village is 3. 3rd house for in your own country, but if you are holidaying in Australia and you go from one village to the other there , i would also take the 3rd house, but if you go to New Zealand from Aus, i would take the 9th. I am inclined more to look at distance than as time. That might not always be right of course, but so far it gives reasonable okay results. IP: Logged |

Well... the only problem is that I can be in another country in a 20 min car ride because I live that close to an international border... and I often drive to another city in this country... takes about 2 hours to get there... so if I ask a question about going there... do I use 9 because it's another country or 3 because it's a short trip that is technically the closest major city to the one I'm in?Then there are other cities in my own country that take 6 hours to fly to but I would use 3 for them because they are in the same country that I live in....? Ugh... astrology can be so complicated But I still love it IP: Logged |

I don't know much about horary at all. Really. But somehow Tofu's explanation sounded right to me based on the energy I associate with those houses in general. I think if you are going to a foreign country then it's still a 9th house issue. Feel free to pour salt all over my response IP: Logged |

To make it even more complicated, i once read, that the person that is involved has the final say over distance. Lets say , somebody who lives very rural in the mountains of Nepal, and has to make a foottrip to the neighbouring mountain which is 50 miles away, he is never been out of his village, than it would be a huge trip for him, and would count as a 9th house matter, while if you would live in England, and you travel 50 miles to work all the time, it would be a 3rd house matter, they basically stated that you should look at the circumstances as well of the person that is travelling, so in the case of your example, go with what feels for you foreign is foreign, even if it isn't really foreign,, but assign it to the 9th house, and if you feel it is 3rd house, even if it is strictly not, take the 3rd house, you can play with it, see what works best. Hope this makes a bit of sense. IP: Logged |

Well, it's truly difficult but if I use my gut I am going to have to say that all of English speaking North America for me should be H3, and pretty much everything else H9... as well because I have traveled most of this world and I've already called 4 continents home... but since NA is home now... that for me feels like H3, even if some places I go cross borders and some places within borders are fairly far in comparison. But I like the Nepal reference and agree with that- it all depends on the traveler/querent.
