Sentimentality originally indicated the reliance on feelings as a guide to truth, but current usage defines it as an appeal to shallow, uncomplicated emotions at the expense of reason.IP: Logged |

I don't really get the 'new' usage. The word will never mean that to me.When I think of the word "sentimental", I tend to think "nostalgia", among other things, such as having a little soft spot for someone/something/a memory, maybe being a little mushy or sappy or overly sweet. I think of someone who's maybe a "softie". I see "an appeal to shallow, uncomplicated emotions at the expense of reason" as "emotional manipulation" rather than "sentimental". IP: Logged |

I actually agree with what Platero said- the new usage doesn't make sense to me. But whatever...I can be disgustingly sentimental, as evidenced by the fact that... (Oh, this is hard for me, a Capricorn, to admit...) I like Bollywood movies a lot. And ABBA. It's gotta be my Venus conjunct Neptune, square my Pisces moon, square Mars (mutable t-squares.) I think water influence.Moon, Venus, Neptune. I agree with Faith and Regardes, "sentimentality" isn't such a negative term to me and it doesn't necessarily mean shallow emotions. IP: Logged |

^ Yeah, "shallow emotions" doesn't make any sense, since one can only be sentimental about the past, and holding onto memories over a long period of time shows "deep" attachment to them.IP: Logged |

Hmmm... Well my emotions are rarely, if ever, shallow and especially NOT uncomplicated but I have, on occasions, made emotional decisions, especially as team leader. Cancer on the 6H, I suppose?IP: Logged |

Hmm... Maybe it's because I've seen true sentimentality turned into false gushiness way too often, but yes, I do think that sentimentality can often be an appeal to shallow, uncomplicated emotions at the expense of reason (when it is carried too far). Some people are more sentimental than others (mostly when thinking about the past). I often think that overly sentimental people don't realize that for some people (ie, NOT THEM), once the emotional moment is over it is over. The sentimentality of super emotional people can then TURN INTO manipulation without them fully realizing it. I've known some people who cry at the drop of a hat and they often seem to want to guilt me for not being as emotional about the situation as they are. For me, the moment is over. For them, they continue to live in that moment. To me it's not BAD, it's just the way that they are vs. the way that I am. It turns BAD when they are trying to impose on me that I should also be as emotional as they are about the situation. In my life, I've mostly seen this happen with people who have water signed Moons (which I have a fire signed Moon, so quite a difference there) and Cancer risings or Moons on the Ascendant/1st house. I have Moon and Venus Sq. Neptune (Moon Conj. Venus exact) and I sometimes assign a bit too much meaning to things.. like home objects, various ornaments, stuffed animals etc. (Neptune in 2nd) If it reminds me of my childhood, I regard it fondly. But I've learned to take those feelings and channel them into music and art. Music especially can get me misty eyed over memories.. I've known a couple of Pisces and Lunar Pisces who were similarly sentimental.IP: Logged |
