so, i have a great chart :-) my planets are all well-aspected and what i feel aligns with what i say and do. my bf has a terrible chart - seriously - it's all oppositions of major planets, squares to major planets and venus/mars are completely unaspected and retro. we have amazing synastry though with the classic mars/venus and pluto/venus with some other great stuff like sun/venus conjunction, vertex to sun exact, chiron to venus exact, and my planets venus/moon fall in his 1st and 5th. but, since he has an afflicted natal chart, does the natal chart 'trump' the synastry chart? basically, can a great synastry and composite chart make up for a 'bad' natal chart of one partner or is it ultimately the natal chart we have to look at to determine if a relationship will advance?

As far as your relationship is concerned, look at the synastry/composite. Now, if you're looking for ways to say, make your boyfriend happy, look at his natal chart. For instance, if he's upset, you would look to his Moon to maybe figure out why he's reacting that way. Then, based on his Moon, figure out what you should do.

AND, there's no such thing as a "bad" chart. His chart has tense energy, but it's not necessarily negative. Tense energy makes the person more proactive, as opposed to an easy chart which makes the native more laid back, go with the flow.

If there's something in the chart that's hemmed in and very afflicted, as in not receiving support elsewhere, then a trine from a partner's chart to that point will help. Also what will help is for that point to be completely unaspected in synastry (no major aspect or inconjunct). The former makes it easier to manage, the latter makes it disappear for the time being, so you can act (while around the other) like it's not a problem.

Synastry can really help you grow. That is the great thing about astrology. You are never alone with your energies. Maybe you have a "easy" chart but then it is a greater challenge to corroborate with a harder apected individual. I know aguy with a"easy chart" alot of trines and conjunctions. Jupiter is really giftd in his chart, no hard aspect to pluto or saturn but he is bipolar and have a really hard time being in relationships. As a individual he is one of the most finest people I have met but he often crash when he is with people not understanding why they are so difficult to handle
