Coltrane's the man! I like the music of his son, Ravi.

Denzel and I share the same birthday (different year).

To be honest I don't really like him. He is very talented, but his songs are too repetitive. It's one of the sad things that happened to jazz as time went on. Now everyone just thinks of repetitiveness when they think of jazz

Well, variations on/around a theme began with JS Bach, didn't it? Coltrane's style is inspired almost exclusively by Bach.

The trouble with most people is that they tend to ignore the classical roots behind music. Even rock and metal comes out of classical. Steve Tyler says so himself. His dad was an ultra accomplished classical pianist.

Huh? Coltrane's style inspired by Bach? I am confused. Could you explain?

I took a class named Evolution of Jazz. I understand what you're saying in a way. Lol. But not fully.

Just as an example. One of the main forms of Jazz expression is the Rondo.

In simple text, Rondo is an instrumental form characterized by the initial statement and subsequent restatement of a particular melody or section, the various statements of which are separated by contrasting material.

There can even be an alternation, digression and a return, but a Rondo conforms to either a five-part abaca or a seven-part abacaba (which means variations around a theme).

A Rondo (also French Rondeau) comes from the classical music form, Sonata Ritornello. That is a Baroque form of musical expression. The most famous of which is the Bach Brandenburg Concertos.

Coltrane, Miles, Armstrong, Gillespie, Basie, Ellington, Goodman, etc. all found their roots in classical music training.

For your reference, here is an explanation of music form. Your college professor obviously didn't go into the music theory part of jazz.

Oh thank you

very nice explanation. Sorry, though, just because it came from classical music and that classical music did it as well doesn't mean it is nice. I don't know. There's just a lot other nice jazz out there that isn't repetitive. Also a lot of beautiful classical that isn't repetitive

I don't want music to bore me to death, haha, I dunno.

A little off topic RAS but, I've always thought Denzel Washington and George Clooney looked a lot alike. XD
