Some Tips for Beginners—Think about the Elements
By amiann | Published: June 10, 2012

Astrology becomes alive when you can see it play out in your real life. Each person seems to be attracted to different parts of Astrology. Thom is attracted to Elements. He thinks about different people in terms of elements( and element voids) That is one way to start integrating Astrology into your every day thought processes. With elements, do you know someone who has papers all over her desk? Is her pocketbook a mess, such that if someone fell in , they would never come out? Does she not look at her bank statement until the bank issues an alert? This may be an earth void *COUGH* I am one. Conversely, someone high in earth would pay attention to details. They may have an elaborate filing system, an orderly desk and an orderly pocketbook.

Do you know someone who seems as if he finds motivation very hard? Does he seem like he would rather lie in bed and not move, if given half a chance? Does he seem to get depressed very easily? Does he tend to feel hopeless? This is the natural inclination of a fire void. I think of an ad for an anti-depressant , when I think of a fire void. Conversely, someone high in fire would have a natural self confidence , a natural optimism, sense of the joy in life and sense of adventure. Many fire voids are CEO's, as they struggled mightily against the proclivity of the fire void. In doing so, they became more successful than many of those with natural fire.

Do you know someone who seems insensitive to the feelings of others? Often, the person feels as if he is VERY sensitive to the feelings of others. However, his friends and family do not agree. The water void is the hardest void, in my humble opinion. Sensitivity to the feelings of others is very important for relationship with others. If one has a water void, one may be autistic, in this sense. The water void person is often the last to know that others see him this way. When I write about water voids, there will be usually a water void who will argue about how sensitive he is. He will be SO nasty in his vociferous denial of the water void traits, that he makes my point. I do know water voids who have struggled mightily to attain sensitivity and have done so. This applies to all the voids. I know fire voids who are super successful go- getters. Many earth voids are very wealthy. In fact, the earth void seems to draw money to itself, Perhaps, its lack of material concern works in a reverse way.

The last void we will discuss is the air Void. Air is logic, reason and detachment. The air void may be super sensitive to criticism. This is because he cannot step back and detach. Let me give an example. If you told an air void that she looked fat in a bathing suit, she may hit you with her umbrella until you screamed for your life. Someone high in air could step back and assess the situation from a detached vantage point. The person high in air will reason that you insulted her because you were having a bad day or just had a fight with your boyfriend. I am high in air and I thank God every time I can step back and not lose it, with a person. The person high in air will love intellectual pursuits. His mind is a safe place for him. He may escape with reading. He may like nothing more that studying a new subject. His mind can take him to new vistas from the comfort of his arm chair.

Thanks Sweetie. Sometimes, we can overlook the simplicity of some things in Astrology. Thom is a total newbie but he is into the Elements, so he got me thinking

that's exactly how i think of astrology - through the elements. Then I divide the signs into further divisions within each element.

I have at least two planets in all four elements.
two air, two earth, two water (3 if you include ascendant), and four fire.

"natural self confidence, a natural optimism, sense of the joy in life and sense of adventure." hahah yup! minus the self-confidence in some regards hehe

Well, I have to describe things in such a way that they make sense. If I dilute everything so no one has his feelings hurt or feels badly, no one will be able to use anything.

Can you describe the water void for me. It is the hardest one for me to get a true feel for.

whoops i just re-read that, and of course everybody divides the elements. What I meant is that I think of the different ways the elements physically manifest within nature. So within earth i divide it into trees, grass, and moss. Another example would be the difference between a bonfire and the sun.

I'm an almost Air-void with just Saturn in Aquarius, and that combined with four planets in Water should make me pretty quick to react emotionally to stuff. However, since I am also pretty shy and good at holding myself back, I don't think that I'm that obvious about it. I still really like word games and writing, though, if that means anything.

I guess I don't really know what it means to have most of my planets in Water and Earth because it's not like I am a super serious, hard worker/practical type while at the same time being super emotional and intuitive. I could actually use some of that!

I really appreciate your thoughtful, well-written articles.

I have fire in my chart, but it's Rx - so i am coming to realize that while I have always had the optimism and enthusiasm, as you eloquently put it, it's easy for me to get pessimistic. My "good luck" comes to me when I consciously shift my focus to its natural (by now, seems unnatural) state of gratitude, faith in the Universe, and general optimism.

Same thing with all Rx in the elements I'm noticing that void you describe is like the Rx and can be overcome/compensated by a shift in perspective in the area of life it's affecting. How hard/easy that is depends a lot on timing, maturity, and willingness to change.

Thanks again so much!

I agree w/the description of someone "high in air" - sounds spot on. Rationalizing WHY others behave the way they do...

I'm void of most earth... but at 25 I became so fed up with my flightiness that I went into OCD mode. Lists, calendars, budgets, spreadsheets, planners...overcompensation is the only way to combat my scatterbrain!
