Does this placement make it difficult for an individual to express love, or understand their emotions?

Sure does. I got this natally. Emotions can be repressed unknowingly, then they come out and you may be confused.
I have quite a few links on this placement and Ami Anne has posted some stuff on it if you want to snoop around Lala

imo yes. my long-term bf has this and he struggles A LOT with the expression of love. it's been years since he even hugged his mother and the words 'i love you, i care about you, i like you' - basic stuff to other people... he just cannot say them at all. we have been together almost 2 years and he hasn't said any of that, but my experience is that they, obviously, can still express emotions/love in many other ways because they are completely aware of their difficulties with emotions. there is confusion too - like a push/pull in the relationship; wanting the person but almost denying yourself the complete happiness for whatever reason(s) they struggle with. anyway, he has moon 12th in leo, which is kind of a bummer, because leo moon is a really romantic sign. my fix: every single time he shows romanticism or loving/caring i praise him endlessly - to help encourage it and show it's ok, ya know?

Very hard to know his own feelings, let alone express them. He feels very vulnerable, as a result.

My wife has her Moon in the 12th House in Gemini. I disagree with what has been said.

I also have Moon in the 12th in Taurus and don't fit in to that either. It really must depend on aspects. I am very open about my feelings and sharing my love. But I have Moon conjunct SN and Jupiter and also squaring Mars so maybe that's my outlet. And maybe with my SN there I've been there, done that.

I do know 12th house Moon people for whom this is true however so it just boils down to a combination of aspects and choices I think.
