Moon in Cancer by Judy HallBy far the most sensitive of all the Moons, the soul with this placement is highly emotional and yet cool on the surface. Feeling vulnerable, the soul seeks to protect itself and to fulfill deep security needs, holding onto the past in the process. The nurturing instinct is strong. THE ETERNAL MOTHER Cancer has powerful connections with mothering and nurturing. The soul with the Moon in Cancer carries the archetype of the eternal mother. This is a strong urge to care for other people, to comfort them and provide sustenance. When the archetype is acting positively, this soul has an unsurpassed capacity for nurturing others, caring not only for children but for any needy soul. This Moon often acts as surrogate mother to the rest of the zodiac. In the process, the “smother mother” may make herself felt (in men as well as women). This Moon is highly possessive and does not easily cut the strings that bind another soul. When this Moon is operating as a mother, all other needs may be sublimated to those of the family. CLINGING TO THE PAST The soul with the Moon in Cancer clings to the past. Like the crab, those claws do not let go easily and this soul hangs on even into death. This soul wants things to be as they have always been because this is what gives it a sense of security. To be needed, to be wanted, and to have a familiar role in life are important. So much so that the soul may well resist moving into the Sun-sign, fearing the insecurity that would bring. This entails carrying an enormous amount of baggage from the past – and a “security blanket” in the present life is provided by physical baggage and possessions. The soul with the Moon in Cancer rarely ventures out without at least three bags full of treasured possessions. If this soul is to grow, then the past and its ingrained emotional pattering must be left behind. A good clearout – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual – is required. EMOTIONAL NEEDS The soul with this vulnerable Moon looks for ways to meet the clinging and dependent needs of the child within. A deep sense of insecurity stems from the unmet needs and unfulfilled emotions of childhood, which are carried forward into the present. Unmet needs can also come forward from past lives. This moody soul can carry immense self-pity from another life and continually seeks reassurance and validation. Inner dependence and vulnerability are hidden behind a hard shell of indifference, an appearance of coldness or self-sufficiency, but underneath the soul is desperately needy. It is essential that this soul has time to withdraw and go within to find inner sustenance and to process the powerful emotions that threaten to take over. Given this inner support, the soul is able to express its powerful need to nurture others in a positive way. LUNAR FOOD The lunar food craved by the soul with the Moon in Cancer is emotional sustenance and validation for powerful emotional feelings. Home is very important. Without a strong home base, this soul is lost. MOTHERING EXPECTATIONS What the soul seeks from the mother is comfort, nurturing, and emotional closeness; and support for those powerful needs. This soul desperately wants to experience overwhelming mother love. The expectation is of strong mothering. What the soul fears is the highly protective “smother mother,” who holds her child close and allows no separation. ANCESTRAL INHERITANCE With its powerful bonds to the past and to the mother, the Cancer Moon often inherits through the feminine DNA. This may be a propensity for congenital illness, but if the soul has incarnated as a woman this time, then the dis-ease may well manifest at a gynecological level. Old issues about being a woman pass down through the genes. This may indicate a matriarchal family where the mother is all-powerful. PAST LIFE ROLES This soul has had many incarnations as mother or wise woman. It is the midwife to the tribe, the homemaker, and the purveyor of comfort and sustenance. As male, it is the cook and sailor.

I don't believe in past lives, but I did find this interesting.I myself am not motherly or nurturing. I'm unapologetically childfree and have no desire to be a mother. Period. End of discussion. However, I can be very loving towards animals (due to my Sag ASC, maybe?), mainly dogs. I don't feel the same towards people. Emotionally, I can feel caring towards friends/people I care about, but not in a maternal way and not with kids. I don't always express this, but simply feel it. I do feel a strong need for security and stability. I'm realizing more and more that I fear really big changes, and that I don't always trust myself/feel competent (especially since some people in my life, though luckily not all, don't always treat me or think of me as competent and capable). This can lead me into complacency. So, I'm trying to take steps to actively change that and not be so passive. I'm also trying to do a 'clear out' right now of material things. I'm going through my stuff, deciding what to throw away, what to try to sell/give away, etc. I want to make room for things that I want and this is a physical manifestation of what I hope to do internally as well. As for the "emotional needs" section, I can feel childlike emotionally sometimes. I do feel a lot of insecurity, particularly about being liked, accepted, like people want me around, like I have a purpose, like I'm needed and valuable. I never really felt those things from my mother on a consistent basis. Material security from her, yes, but emotional/non-material, no. I do have powerful emotions, and I'm working on embracing my intensity and learning to manage it. I resent people in my life who make me out to be a bad/defective person for being intense. I am no longer accepting being told that experiencing things in an emotionally intense way is bad. I just have to learn to process and manage my feelings in a way that serves me. I do need to experience negative feelings when I have them and to allow myself to feel them, maybe even be inspired (as in, to get creative and like write or draw or something). I'm not going to repress them or ignore them, but I'm not going to let them cause me to make bad decisions, either. Validation is very important. From my mother, I have always sought comfort, nurture, and closeness, but I've seldom really felt that. My mother does have her good points, but I really don't feel like my emotional needs have always been met with her--material, yes, emotional, no. For what it's worth, she has a Gemini moon and Capricorn Venus, which are less emotionally-inclined placements. IP: Logged |

i'm not quite sure if it's the pluto/moon aspect. the act could just be her defense mechanism. yes, i have a cancer moon friend and she is very nurturing.. sometimes to a fault and i have to reassure her that it is not selfish to take care of her own needs first. it's ironic that she is an aries sun, but i guess her moon keeps her from owning her sun sign.

My friend has her asc, sun, and mars in gemini, but doesn't act like it. She's too quiet, secretive, and serious, and would rather be alone. It must be her Cancer moon and pluto aspects. The nurturing was spot on. We always tell her she's too giving and caring. Her dad is an aquarius with cancer moon, and the sensitivity and nurturing is there. Silent type too. IP: Logged |

Good Post!I have my moon in Cancer as well. Inwardly, I'm very motherly. I feel like I want to take care of everyone AND watch over everyone, feed everyone and give everyone compassion and love. The relationship I have with my own mother has always been really leveled, and i'm very protective of her. In my teen years, we fought alot. I was very withdrawn and held alot of my feelings in, then I would explode in rages and become harmful. Now that I am older, I look back and wish I had creative outlets to vent my anger and frusteration during those years. Nowadays, I think a lot about whether of not if I will ever become mother, because I know if I ever do become one, it will change my life forever. I think very differently about motherhood than most women. I think of how mind-blowing it would be to carry another life inside of me, raise it, and see this child as my own...as a product of ME. I don't understand women who become mothers and abandon their duties just to party, carry-on, and not honor their motherhood with their children. I sometimes wonder if I will make a good mother. How I will raise my child to the be the best they can be. But I try not to worry and know that god will see it all through. And If I'm meant to become a mother, it will happen. If not, it is what is. Whew...so glad I got to express this! IP: Logged |
