So the landing of the Curiosity rover today on Mars has sparked ... well, my curiosity. With how technology is moving, it's an inevitability that humans will eventually be moving to the red planet.

What are your theories on the effects of living or being born on a place like Mars on astrology? How would the nature of Mars seep into someone's very nature? Say you have a weakly aspected Mars in your natal chart, based on your birth on Earth, yet transplanted or moved to Mars. How would this change how Mars' energy manifests? How about vice versa? Say you were born on Mars, and moved to Earth? How would Terran and Lunar energy manifest? What about Phobus and Deimos?

Theories?

I think mars energy seeping into someones nature would indicate someone who is more adventurous and courageous to venture into the beyond. More ambitious and hungry to seek answers and new meanings.

Since mars is a natural warrior... On the negative, Being on mars would make one more restless, more impatient or frustrated with slow discoveries.

This is very interesting... I hope others chime in soon with their own theories as well

I agree, Lotis White. Mars astrology is something to look into I think, because it will become more important as we move closer to interplanetary colonization. Heliocentric astrology might come more to the fore, but for those who still strongly support geocentric, it will have a new marscentric type of astrology to refine. One's cradle can't be ignored.

Personally, I think a terran-born person will have their natal Mars become less inhibited with a relocation to the red planet. How exactly it manifests though, I think is dependant upon a relocation chart. A non-violent person may suddenly become morbid if Pluto suddenly begins making some hard aspects. Not to mention 12H folks - things may come to light that the native isn't used to.

The real obstacle is how to deal with rulerships. Deimos-Phobus can easily replace the moon for Cancer, since their quick and alternating cycles slip right into the same pattern role the moon fills for Earth. The "loony" effect might even be stronger, all things considered. Phobus is incredibly close to Mars, and moves very fast - orbiting in a breakneck 7 hours!

I hadn't considered the Earth-Moon system replacing Venus as a ruler for Taurus, but that also makes sense. Venus always has struck me as kind of off for Taurus. It will be fascinating to see how Terran/Lunar energy melds and manifests.

Now Aries and rulership, that's where you encounter the trouble.

I think the big asteroids, like Vesta/Juno/Pallas, and the dwarf planet Ceres will become significantly more prominent, as well. Ceres exerts more gravitational pull than Pluto, even from Earth!

And how about that monster of a beast, Jupiter? Oh man.

We'd start using Marscentric charts instead of Geocentric charts.

Asteroids, the moons of Jupiter, a space station, and in the depths of deep space will be even more interesting.

And should we ever develop a tech that allows us to cross the distance to the stars in some sort of hyperspace (that is presumably "outside" our own universe) then it becomes mind boggling to consider the chart someone born in that, IMO.

The planets would be in different signs, and because we are on Mars, Mars would not be in our chart and the Earth would
take it’s place and have it’s own sign, and house, based on
the time that we were born and where we presently are
on Mars. Our basic personality may stay the same, but our
experience of what life has to offer would drastically
change if we were born on Earth and then moved to Mars.
I think the reverse would be true if you were born on Mars
and then moved to Earth. The chart you were born with
on Mars would be your basic, fundamental, unchangeable
personality… but your experience of life would drastically
changed if you moved to Earth, and you’d get a new
relocated chart based on where you currently are on
Earth, and what was rising and where the planets were
during the moment in time that you were born.

My inner astro geek approves. Martians would be de facto fiery, with great, wiry bodies, and in their chart Earth would present staying ground and energy of perseverance as opposed to go-getter Martians' tendency - the goal is to stay foot.

I have actually plotted "natal" charts for Spirit, Opportunity, and Curiosity based on their landing sites and dates. I'd be interested in hearing any interpretations from more experienced astrologers.

Interesting topic. New to the forum, but have been studying astrology for 14 years. Found this forum by googling "astrology on mars" as I was contemplating what the procedure for astrological chart casting on Mars would be.

I mostly agree with what has been said, in that Marsian aspects would most likely show their affects on an Earthling transplanted to a Marsian environment - besides the charming aspects mentioned, I would imagine Mars natives, or those transplanted would develop even more of a violent side than Earth dwellers - Mars is the planet named for the Roman god of war lets not forget.

As for what would replace the Moon/Cancer, I think it is more likely that Earth would take the place of the Moon as the ruler of Cancer. Cancer is the sign of the Mother and the Home. The Moon is the "Mother" of the Earth in that the gravity it exerts over the Earth controls the tides and the feminine cycle as well as other generative cycles. For those living on/born on Mars, Earth would be the Mother-Home planet of their ancestors and the human race.

What would take over the rulership of Aries? Phobos and Deimos - the left and right horns of the Ram. Let us remember the new location will be Mars. When on Mars the closest celestial objects to Mars will be these fundamentally Marsian rough/crude fast moving Moons that appear to have had a past of physical violence - these two objects will exert their forces over Mars and amplify Marsian energies. My guess is their energies are something of a Mercury/Mars/Pluto conjunction.

I'm not so sure about Earth replacing the moon as ruler for Cancer. The moon is associated with mothers and fertility because of the monthly push and pull of the moon's gravity on women's menstrual cycles. The hormonal disbalance affects emotions more visibly among women, commonly referred to as "PMS". Among the general population, the full moon is also attributed to otherwise "loony" behavior, emotional upset leading to careless accidents, as well as women giving birth.

On Mars, Phobus and Deimos would fulfill this role, exerting a regular and repeating cycle of gravitational tugs on the human psyche. Earth is far too distant to exert that kind of influence. By the sheer nature of Mars underfoot, and having a quicker orbit, emotional upset will be more prominent and apparent as the two moons make their rounds.

More and more, I think the Earth-Moon system may replace Venus as the ruler for Taurus. Taurus rules over resources and wealth, and what place in our solar system would better represent such natural abundance?

As for Aries, Pluto may play a dual role, much like Mars has in the past, ruling both Aries and Scorpio. Being native to Mars, a slower-moving planet may be more appropriate to represent such ingrained, fiery energy.

This is but one aspect of the Moon, and in fact adds to my point that the Moon/Cancer is associated with the Mother. What else but Earth if one is on Mars could possibly be associated with the "Mother" archetype?

This is an incredibly narrow interpretation of the influence of the Moon. The moon, along with the Sun is one of the two Luminaries - that is, there are 2 luminaries(Sun and Moon) and the other planets - the Sun and Moon are of the oldest observed celestial objects used in astrological predictions. I would suggest that on Mars, in the absence of the Moon as a second Luminary, Earth would have to take this role, as it is, and will be of such major importance to all humans, and in the future all humans living on or born on the surface of Mars. Secondly, another reason why Phobos and Deimos should take the spot of Aries over Cancer is that they are not in the least "feminine" planetoids. Please look at their crude and rough appearance. They appear to be battle-hardened celestial objects. They are also quite small, Deimos being only 12.6km in diameter and Phobos being 22.6km in diameter - to think that these extremely small asteroids captured by Mars's gravitational pull are worthy of being second in importance to the Sun is frankly a bit absurd from an astrological perspective, leaving the Earth as the only celestial object which could possibly fill the role of the Moon in its Marsian absence.

Also, Uranus is more responsible for "sudden and unexpected accidents" than the Moon. Yes, the moon changes rapidly, but the phases and changes of the moon are neither unexpected nor unpredictable. We know that every 14 days there will be either a new moon or a full moon.

And I would say that Phobos and Deimos are far too small to exert the kind of influence you are talking about ... as stated in my first post, any emotion influence they will bring will be of a Marsian war like nature - they almost seem to be two small bullet like projectiles to me.

quote:
More and more, I think the Earth-Moon system may replace Venus as the ruler for Taurus. Taurus rules over resources and wealth, and what place in our solar system would better represent such natural abundance?

Actually, Jupiter, the planet of wealth itself, the higher benefactor (compared to Venus as the lesser benefactor) is exalted in Cancer ... thus another reason why Earth as Cancer would have to fit the bill rather than changing Taurus from Venus to Earth...

quote:

This is even more farfetched. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, it is represented by the Ram and the spring. It has nothing to do with Pluto energies. There is violence inherent in Aries, like Scorpio, but in Aries the violence has more to do with the renewal of life - like rams fighting over a mate, rather than the Scorpion or Eagle stealthily killing its prey.

We're going to get into a war over this, I can already tell. I respect your opinion, but I still disagree with you. It isn't too surprising, given the subject is about MARS of all planets, lol.

As for luminaries, Phobus and Deimos are both luminaries from the surface of Mars [Deimos is suspect, more like a very bright star, but Phobus is about 1/3 the size of the moon in the Martian sky, and casts a shadow, as a luminary should]. Both are visible and reflective of the Sun's light in both the night and day sky. Earth's moon is demoted as a luminary, and melds with the Earth as part of a regular planet system in the night sky.

As for the description of the effects of the moon, my point was to illustrate that the effects are a byproduct of the moon's gravitational influence from the surface. The moons of Mars exert the same nearby gravitational pull, which is why I feel they fulfill the role.

The unpredictability of Uranus has no role in this debate, so I will refrain from commenting on that.

As for Jupiter, it is the planet of expansion. It increases all it touches, including "debt" and "destruction". Natural abundance or "wealth", source of valuable resources, "something" from "nothing", these still strike me as Terran attributes.

Being a Mars native, I think the very nature of each zodiac sign will see alteration in expression. The ruler for Aries may well be most appropriate as one of the asteroids from the main asteroid belt, perhaps even something as simple as 28 Bellona or 4 Vesta [even though both of these are feminine, and Vesta is already a candidate for the ruler of Virgo]. I bring up Pluto because it is a higher octave of Mars, and thus similar in energy.

Astrology in principle has all its various factions and divisions, and people can get heated and passionate about their methodology. I'm sure Martian astrology will be no different. In short, we'll have to agree to disagree here. Truth is, we won't be able to systematically test any of these theories until we actually colonize Mars, and have client charts to analyze and interpret. But it's fun to theorize, and we may be setting a precedent for future astrologers.

Ok, cool, I said my piece, as a Cancerian I am confident history and the people will see things my way But I still think assigning Phobos and Deimos to Cancer is just plain wrong, and frankly, slightly insulting to the sign. Lastly ... I can even think of more reasons why Earth should be associated with Virgo than Taurus, but I still ultimately think "The Blue Planet" (Blue, because it has, you know, 70% water) is on an extra-terrestrial level mainly composed of Cancerian attributes for the collective mind of humanity.

I'd think the Martian moons would exert their influence based on the mythological forces they're named after. (For example, Phobos would influence fears and phobias.)

IIRC, one moon is so small that I believe I read that if someone were able to run very fast on the surface and jump he could launch himself into orbit around it (as opposed to falling straight back down).

Still, even the asteroids make their effects known...

I used to do Martian astrology, actually, back in the day. I'm sure there's a way to Google the easiest way to erect such a chart.

I recall it was (obviously) very different. I believe it was in American Astrology, and the example was Madonna. 'What if Madonna Were Born on Mars?' kinda thing.

This is a great subject, but we can only speculate...

As earthlings what specific qualities do we have? how would natives of the other planets in our system view us, or view the earth?

I am asking because I am not convinced that natives of Mars would be more aggressive. First of all, they would not have a "Mars" in their chart, but they would have an "Earth" so what would that mean?

Earthlings are born in an abundant location overflowing with resources. That makes us a bit lax and prone to overindulgence, for we have security in our surroundings. Accidentally burn down a forest? It'll grow back.

For a native Martian [perhaps even those who move there], I think this will drill a more aggressive [not necessarily violent, but proactive] approach to life in general, due to the very Spartan and sparse locale. For a long time, the first Martians are going to have a very, very hard life, and will need to make hard and risky decisions. There may even be an underlying resentment for the ones still living on Earth for this reason.

Earth may represent something like the arabic lot of fortune. Areas of abundance and success.
