Let's talk about Mercury. I want to understand it better. I am ruled by it as a Virgo. My Gemini husband is ruled by it too albeit in a different funtionality then me. But I even think that this creates a compatability though traditional astrology would say otherwise due to the square of our signs. But I find we think, talk, think, talk together and even in our silence we are both thinking and analyzing lots!!! lol. I find we are openminded and willing to see eachothers different points of view, we are both changeable and open to change... Don't you need all that in love?

BUT I also often think of how "blah" and un exciting being ruled by Mercury is because on some level I perceive it as lacking emotion, excitement, passion...I know this is wrong. I want to embrace and understand Mercury in the natal chart more. So tell me about it in your chart and those you know and how it manifests. Here are some terms to help...

We know Mercury rules - Virgo and Gemini, which functions in the 3rd and 6th house for those signs.

Key Words from Sue Tompkins "Aspects in Astrology": Thought, speech, writing, Communications. The rational mind. Opinions, Making connections, Siblings, School, How we learn.

Symbols from Kevin Burk's Book "Understanding the Birth Chart": Keys, children, movable objects, messengers and messages, all vehicles and forms of transportation, and all forms and instruments of communication (telephones, fax machines, computers, and so on.)

Qualities: Neutral: equally yin and yang. Quick, changeable, dual-natured.

Mythology: Mercury was the messenger of the Gods, but not a God himself, and it is the Gods who make judgements, who ask what it all means. Mercury is simply concnered with information - and quite unconcerned with the usefulness or otherwise of that information, and perhaps not even bothered about whether it is true or not.

Thanks for your dialogue!

Mercury is a god he had the ability to move throughout multiple realms; the surface, the heavens and the underworld a ability most gods didn't possess.

Interesting! That's right, he is a God...But According to the book above he wasn't. I wonder why the book said that.

I love Mercury! Everything is so changeable and easily to deal with. I'm a Virgo Rising with a supah strong Mercury...my mind isn't always racing, unlike my triple Virgo ma, but if I'm at home, it's only to cool my heels from running about town.

You're kind of right about the emotion, excitement, and passion though, as I seek those out. I'm sooper emotional and I understand it well, but being surrounded by it is even better. Excitement is bliss, and passion, from the thrill of people to rush of conflict, gets me all warm and fuzzy.

I love merc to...its depositor for my MC!
Virgo moon and Gemini mars tho gets a bit overwhelming with racing thoughts...
gemini moving at speed of light, virgo seeing every detail, then add a saggy mercury in a stellium with sun and neptune...my head is spinning...how do you go about seeing every detail in the big picture? I guess using gemini's quickness?
Either way, i get a lot of headaches! lol

To help understand your Virgo or Gemini planets, maybe look at which sign Mercury is in?

For example, my Virgo Rising, Mercury is in Libra. I'm a very social person - company and companionship is important to me. Social grace is important to me, and especially is social justice. I think the Virgo-Libra is a good combination as they complement one another.

That is a nice combo!

I'm a Sun 8th virgo with Mercury, and Mars in Virgo in 9th. I am an educator/academic counselor. Mercury, mars, sun opposed to jupiter.

I was born on Mercury's day, and I have it angular and not all that far from my NN...but honestly I've always been bored by it. Uranus is much cooler to me as it's Mercury on steroids...

I couldn't have said it any better! I have a lot of Uranus in my chart as well as Pluto...I think that is why I struggle with the mercury? I dunno. But I love my Plutonian and uranian aspects along with my moon. But I know without mercury we'd all be mute! Lol! Ha!

I love Mercury and other Mercury-laden people! I have Sun, Mercury, and Venus in Gemini. My ascendant is Libra and the 1st house is where my Libra stellium (Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto) is and true that Libra is ruled by Venus but my Venus is in Gemini and it also conjunct my Gemini Mercury so Mercury actually is controlling my Libra stellium! I'm overly Mercurial via Gemini but I find that I get along quite well with those who are overly mercurial via Virgo.

The reason why Mercury is not given much importance is the nature of Mercury itself exists as being the fastest energy which is often not felt. Slower moving forces such good ole' Saturn and crazy Uranus gets felt... sometimes a little too much. Mercury doesn't want to be felt up, Mercury wants to exist on the brain and conduct life that way- fast and fluid. Mercury isn't interested in making a presence, Mercury knows and is aware that he must exist everywhere because we rely on that energy to survive on the most mundane and concrete level.

I have a lot of Mercury and I noticed the only time I'm really appreciated is when I point out practical but often overlooked points of life and the people who often listen to me are other Mercury based people and even Saturn, Uranus, and Pluto will listen to me. The energies that are often most self involved have little patience or interest in being captivated by life's simple constructs.

When I was doing my graduate studies and had to teach classes, my students who hung onto my every word were Virgos LOL and they were always so meticulous. I had Leo and Aries students who often challenged my method of teaching because I looked young like them and they didn't really respect me as an "elder" as they had ideas of what an instructor actually "looked and acted like." It was a bit too palsy with my students and treated them as equals which was a big riff from the other graduate students who taught classes and most of my fire students had a hard time accepting me as both friend and instructor. The ones who really were on the ball were the Aquarius, esp. the males b/c they often hit on me LOL

Mercury and its connection with writing and literature has always been important to me. In fact I went to school to get my degree in English literature after all and I just found out today that I am related to Edgar Allan Poe - a English major's dream!

Mercury is my secondary chart ruler. I have Sag ASC but my Jupiter is in Gemini, along with Sun conjunct Mercury and natal Moon in the 3rd H and my chart ruler in the 6th H and I have Gemini Venus. I raised by a Gemini Sun mother and she taught me the beauty that lie in words.

Love what you wrote. You are an instructor too!

And what you wrote it has helped add a deeper level of understanding. Of course...we do take advantage of the mundane things! Thank you for reminding me of this in relationship to mercury. People are often amazed at how articulate I am.Yet, I often assume everyone else is like this. And really many people aren't. I think I actually can overwhelm people with my talking because I express things so freely. And actually the Internet is hard for me at times because I often feel misunderstood! I can't say all I need to! Lol!!!!

I talk before I think too often and this, well this can get one in trouble. I've gotten better over the years and my husband who is Sun but with mercury retrograde third house and Gemini is an introvert...so he thinks everything through internally before talking. But he does love to chat!!!

Most people don't understand that Mercury is introverted by nature and so are both Gemini and Virgo, probably Gemini more than Virgo. Geminis appear to be "social" but we're quite content to be solo with our ideas and just being near others but not necessarily having to directly interact with them.

The ones who tend to understand what I'm talking about most of the time are Virgos which crack me up cuz that's probably the only other sign who loves to RANT about everything on an equal basis like Gemini. Not even Aquarius can handle total objective ranting as they tend to get all uppity with their stupid idealism which really annoys the heck out of me. Aquas usually are smart but too misguided with their own big ideas about how things "should be" whereas, Mercury/Gemini and Virgo are perfectly fine with the way things are. The thing that really cracks me up is that Aqua likes to act like they're cool with everything when they're some of the most uptight and easily offended people I've ever met and yet Virgo acts like they're uptight about everything but inside they don't really give a sh*t! I should know, I'm really close friends with a Virgo who's got a stellium in the 3rd house and we go on ranting rampages all the time!!

You think Aquarius can be uptight? I havent found that. Maybe sometimes preppy dressing, but uptight??? Havent seen that! Hmmm, maybe I'm somewhat blind to this with my Aquarius moon...I love Aquarius in my chart because I always assume it's partially what "lightens me up" when I get over analyze and worry - very much a virgo in this way. But Maybe it's my Jupiter too that lightens me up. it is true that people think Virgos are all uptight, but as for me...could not be further from the truth! I am very openminded and other post on Mercury in the forum right now someone was saying Earth could be Virgos ruler. I am for sure earthy. I actually wish I was more Leo libra sophisticated. Anyway, I digress! Lol... Virgo is a very misunderstood sign I believe in general.

And yup I think it was you and me that were talking on another post about how Gemini can be quite the loners and happy introverts. This is for sure my experience.

Uranus is the higher octave of Mercury. I think as long as we still had Uranus, we'd be just fine.

True! True... Very true! In fact isn't each planet seeking a way to communicate itself...verbally or non verbally? I think so!

But Uranus is a slow planet. It rules a fixed sign.
Isn't Uranus the "genius" planet? Talents can grow here - they have time to develop into something big.
But Uranus isn't a substitute for Mercury.
Mercury is out there.
It is wit and poetry. It enables critical thinking, it solves puzzles.
Mercury is the god of travelers and merchants, of transitions and boundaries. The son of the highest of the gods and a mountain nymph - he is the one who brings the divine to earth and accompanies the human soul to Hades.
Uranus on the other hand is one of the original gods. He came from Chaos and was father to all gods and mythical creatures on earth. He is almighty- the sky, the rainmaker - but he is also stuck, inflexible.
His presence is crucial but he alone doesn't
give us what Mercury has to offer.

I think Virgo and Gemini when the whole chart is analyzed can be quite a dynamic pair!

What are your moons and Asc??

Personally I love my mercury placement, my parents didn't like it when I was little though I drove them bonkers with my energy and mischievous behavior which is properly why they attempted to redirect my boundless energy, failed miserably. Even now I am uncomfortable not doing one thing at a time.
Sun and Jupiter in 3rd
Moon in Gemini conjunct Taurus asc
Venus in Gemini opposite Uranus
