Well I personally found that it is more telling of the relatioship at hand. What I mean is, say you are interested in Will.
Maybe you were really compatible with the composite that you formed using your individual birthdates. Now, you have to consider the fact that people are always evolving. So natally each one will mature in different areas at different times and that will therefore mean the progressed composite will change.
You kinda have to feel the rhythm and jump into their lives at the most opportune moment. Maybe Will was going through issues when you met him in your teens and so even though the birth chart composite looked beautiful it just wasn't working. If you ran into Will again maybe during a better time in his life things would be much better for a relationship. Sometimes that opportune moment was in the past even before you met.
To see where a person is currently in his own life, I would rely more on a progressed chart. And to see what state the relationship is currently in with me and how it feels to the both of us at the moment, I would check the progressed composite. I put more emphasis on the progressed charts. I mean do you really need to know how well you would have been doing with Will when you were three years old? No. lol..
Having said this, it's a bit tedious. : /
The advantage is you can see into the future of that relationship. The disadvantage is that there are so many aspects being flung your direction when you include the natal aspects....
I would check the natal charts, then the synastry and composite, and then the final touch would be the progressed chart til whenever you expect to be with that person. After Will passes what you would like to see in your significant other's natal chart, you can check how he'll match up with you with synastry and composite. Then after all that check to see if this is the best time for you or not. If it currently is then check to see how your relationship will progress for different years. hehe. Yup.
Now I just want to let you know, I'm no expert at all. This is what I do though.
