If you follow traditional Chinese interpretations, it doesn't work. Sorry to be a wet blanket. Again, those are based on stereotypes. Chinese astrology goes far beyond the year animal. The month, day, hour, Earth element and Heavenly element are much more important than the year.

Generally, there are way too many opposing qualities. I know because my wife is a monkey and she had a snake bf and my snake sister-in-law and her are going to rip each other's throats out one day.

They both love a good time. They both are charming and popular. That's the commonality.

Snake is seductive and reserved and curls up at home. Monkey is extroverted and goes out. In this aspect, I also have a terrible incompatibility with my wife as she wants to go out and my rabbit self likes to hide at home.

As lovers, snake is jealously possessive and intense. Monkey is a faithful lover but also likes the charming limelight, basking in attention.

In work, monkey is a hyper optimistic go-getter. Monkey never not welcome a challenge. Snake is careful, calculating and deliberate. Snake strikes fast only when a need to. Monkey is hyper active and all over the placce. Snake is thrifty with money. Snake understands saving. Monkey knows to have fun and spend and spend and spend. I can attest to the monkey extravagance.

There you go. That's the traditional Chinese version. Married life will be tough.

I'm a metal monkey and my husband's a fire snake, but (honestly) most of YTA's description's totally off the mark for both of us.

Even if the month, day, and time are theoretically more important than the years, the years are still highly significant and reveal a lot.

Suzanne White is probably the best-known Chinese astrologer in America, and in her Guide to Love, she raves about Snake-Monkey.

Hey, I never said I'm any sort of expert. I only give the traditional version.

Someone can be the foremost expert in America or around the world. I'm not questioning that at all.

Mind you that traditional Chinese wisdom is through observation and has been passed down for thousands of years.

Take everything with a ton of salt if necessary.

YoursTrulyAlways I didn't know you knew stuff about the Chinese zodiac! , I thought sand and I were alone here

As to your question RAS...

I have had a lot of personal experience with monkeys and I would say this. It depends on the Monkey, I personally don't use the words "soul mate" in how I judge the compatibilities, but I would say that those combos are either Cohorts or Competition. What I mean by that is that there are so many similarities that they will either be jealous of each other or use their talents together. The Monkey and Snake are two sides of the same brain, Monkey being the more practical and logical side, and Snake being the more theoretical and intuitive side. If they work together towards a goal NO ONE can stop them. There is also an issue of trust between these two, but if they can pass that and finally trust each other then they should be good. Also I have noticed that I have difficulty getting along with male monkeys, but I get along great with female monkeys. So maybe the "competition" manifestation happens more with the same gender, and the "cohort" manifestation happens more with the opposite gender.

Hope this helps Any thoughts?

The Manticore,

I'm no expert, but it's part of my heritage.

You ask a Jew about Matzah balls, you ask an Indian about curry, you ask an Italian about pizza, and so you ask a Chinese about fried rice.

I can't help it that I am Chinese. This is my home turf, even if I don't know it well.

well this is interesting..

ARE YOU
ELEMENTALLY COMPATIBLE?
53
IF YOU PLAYED THE CHILDHOOD GAME of “Rock, Paper, Scissors,” you
are already acquainted with the controlling/assisting cycles of the five
Chinese Elements. The five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water)
both assist and control one another, thus preserving perfect balance in our
universe. Indeed, the moment our souls entered our physical bodies at birth,
they became in tune and in sync with the universal physics of matter. Not
only do these basic Elemental influences shade and flavor our personalities,
but they can be used as a potent compatibility meter, allowing us to have a
glimpse into our connectedness. Do you and your partner help or hinder
each other? Use the time-tested Elemental principles to see if you compliment or conflict with your lover. Do you bring happiness, wealth, and
contentment to each other, or control, unwanted change, or even misfortune?
First, determine which Element ruled the year you were born from the
following “earthly branches and heavenly stems” table. Next, ask yourself
whether your birth-year animal branch is yin or yang. Remember, when
the Wood Element is paired with a yin (-) sign (Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat,
Rooster, Pig), it will always be “yin Wood” or “Yi.” If the Wood Element is
paired with a yang (+) sign (Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Dog) it
becomes “yang Wood” or “Jia.” In this way, the five Elements become the
10 “heavenly stems.

If you are a Fire Tiger, you are “yang Fire” or “Bing” because the Fire
Element is paired with a yang branch animal sign. Similarly, if you are a
Fire Ox, you are “yin Fire” or “Ding,” as the Fire Element is paired with a
yin branch animal sign. Here is an example: Mei Li was born on May 20,
1953—a Water Snake or “Gui Si” year—so she is yin (-) Water. Her partner, Li Chun, was born on October 5, 1956—a Fire Monkey or “Bing
Shen” year—so he is yang (+) Fire. As her Water conquers and controls his
Fire, he represents “entitled or earned wealth” for her. From his vantage
point, her Water brings “beneficial change” to his life.

We've only been married for 3 years, but it's wonderful <3
We had a very quick courtship and engagement. I was 29 and he was 32 - we both knew what we wanted and went for it.
True (I think) to our Chinese birth years, I was the aggressor at first.

Some of the good points:
* Incredible simpatico - we very often will say the same thing at the same time or one of us will say something just as the other is thinking it.
* Very comfortable with each other - he just "feels right" and has from day one.
* He's a talker (Gemini Sun, Saggie Moon, though) and I'm an active listener (Pises Sun, Aqua Moon). I'll start something off and interject / add to at the right time to keep him going, but he'll stop and listen once I formulate my thoughts. We can go on like that for hours and joke about the time and space warping singularity that follows us around.
* Neither of us are big fighters. When we do fight, there's a "I don't understand! Let's figure this out!" vibe rather than an "I'm right and you're wrong!" thrust.
* We both really admire the other and are amazed / thankful to be in a relationship with the other person.
* I completely trust him and he seems to do the same for me.
* We're a good team with the kids (two from my previous marriage + one together). I'm the task master but also steer the family towards joint activities and keep a "center" in the home. He's great for spur-of-the-moment stuff, is a wonderful impromptu cuddler, and is (bar none) the best teacher/explainer I've ever known.

Negatives:
* We can get so into "doing things" and talking together that some other things fall by the wayside.
I'm usually the one to say, "Let's continue this conversation while we do the dishes (or rake the yard, make dinner, etc)."
* Whole weekend mornings slip by cuddling either together or as a family. This isn't exactly a negative, but can kill trips to the farmer's market
* I'm much messier / less conscientious than he is, though he appreciates my concerted efforts to keep my tendencies in check and I appreciate his concerted efforts not to fuss
