Applying means the aspects are moving to exactness - pre-fight. Separating means the aspect is past exactness, the energy is spent and the planets are moving away from each other.

The difference is more observable in dynamic charts (progressions) than in static charts (natal)

Draw a vertical line. Place a zero on the center of that line. Now, place five equally spaced hash marks above the zero to the end of the line. Starting with zero, move up each hash mark and place the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and, 5

Now, place five equally spaced hash marks below the zero to the end of the line. Starting with zero, move down each hash mark and place the numbers -1, -2, -3, -4 and, -5.

This is the concept for the positive and negatives numbers. Astrology calls these numbers aspects.

In Astrology, the faster planet's movement starts from the top and works itself down the vertical line. When the planet reaches the positive 5 position, it is thought of as "applying" or "approaching" the exact conjunction degree of zero, to the second slower planet. The faster planet is at an orb of 5 degrees, from conjunction to the second planet.

When the planet reaches zero, it is thought of as, making an exact conjunction of zero degrees to the second planet.

When the planet reaches negative one, it is thought of as, "separating" from the exact conjunction aspect position.

The aspect influences are getting stronger as the faster planet "applies" or "approaches" the exact position of the aspect to the second planet.

The aspect influences are becoming weaker, as the faster planet continues to move downward away from the second planet and the exact zero position.

In this case, the faster planet is out of aspect orb at a positive six degrees or negative six degrees from the exact aspect conjunction position of zero.

Using the same vertical conjunction line, the faster planet can go retrograde. The planet can reach the negative four position and then pause at that position. And then, begin to slowly climb the line to the positive five position. Where it will then begin to move down the vertical line again.
