I'm very possessive and I have Moon in Virgo (not sure if that's it though) and a Water Mars (Scorpio). Could be that combo (Earth Moon, Water Mars).
BTW Mars in Cancer alone wouldn't do that.
My bf has it and he's def not possessive, on the contrary (prob all his Air influence).
