If you do relationship compatibility, going just by Sun signs won't tell you much about the nature of the relationship at all. The only possible exception to this is if the two Suns are in orb of aspect by degree...

If one person has Sun at 20 Sagittarius, and another person has Sun at 7 Leo, the trine relationship between these two Suns by sign will hardly have any effect. If, however, the Leo had their Sun at 19 degrees instead of 7, the trine relationship will be significant. The two Suns have to be close in numbers (degrees) for the Sun sign relationship to be important in compatibility.

Look around the rest of the site to help you understand the basics. Sun sign compatibility is limited in it's ability to explain relationships and attractions. There is so much more to understand. The positions of each person's Sun (ego identity), Moon (security needs, emotions), Mercury (mental outlook, communication style), Venus (artistic taste, affection), Mars (self-assertion, passion), and the Asc (our world-view, outer personality) are always important in synastry. Interaspects between two people involving these planets, and the Asc, show how people get along up close and personal. The more interaspects there are the better. It's also good if the amount of conjunctions, sextiles, and trines outweigh the amount of squares and oppositions. Although oppositions are not always 'bad', it depends on what planets are opposing.

Soft aspects (sextiles and trines) tend to produce stability, and hard aspects (squares, oppositions) tend to produce activity and change. The conjunction is considered a hard aspect to have between planets, and it's also the most powerful aspects to have. However, because it involves the planets being right on top of each other, it has a dramatic impact like a hard aspect, as well as a solidifying effect like a soft aspect. Most relationships do best with a mixture of the different types of aspects between personal planets... With the majority of those aspects being soft, or conjunctions, to provide stability... And one or two hard aspects thrown in there too, for growth, change and excitement.

ORBS ARE IMPORTANT

Just looking at the signs of planets is not enough to tell if there is an aspect between them. For compatibility to be accurate it's best if you keep the orb small. The orb largest amount of degrees allowed between planets for an aspect to be considered effective. An example of planets being in orb is this... Venus at 29 Leo can be trine to Venus at 27 Aries. They are in aspect because the are only 3 degrees apart (27 to 29)... Each sign has 30 degrees. The closer two planets are to each other by the number of degrees in their respective signs, the stronger the aspect between them is. Personally I use 5 degrees of orb for hard aspects (they are powerful and dramatic), and 3 degrees for soft aspects (they are mild and flowing). If a planet is only 1 degree out of orb though, of course I'll take it into consideration. One more thing, the Sun and Moon are very powerful and can be considered as in aspect to each other if they are up to 10 degrees apart. Though, I like to see them much closer then that! Aspects to the Sun or Moon within 5 degrees, and the closer the better, are what I look for.
