A lot of people are conflicted about how the ASC works. So far I'm in agreement in that it represents how you come across to others you're acquainted with. It's your superficial top-layer personality.

For example, I have Gemini ASC and I'm always on my phone. I know everybody is always on their phones now a'days but I'm actually DOING stuff on my phone and not just texting. Gemini is a multi-tasking sign; I have five tabs open on my computer and flit back and forth. I like writing and various creative media. I also ask a ton of questions more than I give answers!

The above personality traits are something you would see if were you walking past me at school or if you were my cashier at Target. The tip of the iceberg, if you will.

Yeah I agree with them. I have Pluto conjunct my Scorpio AC by 3 and my ascendant opposes my moon by 20 minutes and squares my sun by one minute. It also squares my mercury too but that's by a couple degrees

I feel the same way. My ascendant is Cancer and it feels like a part of my personality. Most people say that I'm very quiet/timid, and I am that way to strangers. But around those I'm comfortable with, I'm more talkative.

I'm very sensitive to my environment. If I'm upset, my stomach will start to hurt. I often come home feeling drained and wanting to do nothing but sleep. When I was younger, I'd take on other people's emotions. Needless to say, I like to be around positive people and I hate conflict.

If I don't feel secure/welcomed in whatever environment I'm in, I tend to feel on edge and very uncomfortable. I won't say much and I'll feel like escaping.

I love good design (I'm always watching those Home Design/Decorating shows and I used to design websites) and good food. I'm also a homebody, but I do like to travel every once in a while.

My ascendant opposes my sun/mercury/saturn/neptune/DSC and conjuncts my Chiron so perhaps that's why I feel it more.

Hmm. I have a Taurus ASC, but it's opposite my Venus in detriment, which would be the traditional chart ruler. And Saturn sextile the ASC. That mess might explain why I come off as very stand-offish, serious, and socially awkward for an excitable, chipper, and fun-loving Sag Sun-Libra Moon combo!

The reason you come across to people as your ASC is you approaching the world like this, your reaction to the environment.

It is by no means superficial; it just describes the initial approach and immediate response to external stimulation. Often it is such an immediate reaction that we are surprised that other people see us that way, cause this way of acting is so close to us, that we can`t see it, and depending on the rest of the chart might heartily dislike.

When my brother once told me that I come across as a strange mix of compassion and combativeness, and that I can be really agressive and argumentative (he meant it positive with his Venus and Mars in Aries. lol) if it is about things I really care about, I was more than surprised, I was shocked!
That is so not how I am. I am peaceful and diplomatic and totally unable to assert myself.
But as a matter of fact thinking back on several occasions I must admit he is right, I can be exactly as he described, if it is about something that is important to me.

I have Mars int he 12th house, but it is conjunct my ASC by 2 degrees (and Neptune is conjunct the ASC by 2-3 degrees from the 1st house).

The ASC is also important for the reason that it determines the whole set of houses for you, the way you approach the world or welcome the world in.
The angles represent a crossing point where you, your inner SElf, your personality meets the whole wide world.

That is simply my take on it. Today. Don´t ask about tomorrow. I might change my mind. I have Mercury conjunct Sun in a mutable sign in 1st house.

to see how the ASC is expressed you need to take into consideration not only in which sign the ASC falls, but also:

° Planets in close conjunction to the ASC
° planets in close aspects to the ASC

° the ruler of ASC in sign, house and its aspects, especially the conjunction

I love this.
My mom said I was the only kid of hers who had their eyes so wide open the minute I was born. She said there was an uncanny curiosity in my eyes, observing the surroundings and lights for a relatively long duration.

"Might heartily dislike" sounds about right. I'm a Sagittarius Sun/Libra Moon with no personal planets in earth signs.

I should have elaborated more on my question. What i really want to know is how the Ascendant works. We know how the sun sign works or moon depending what season it is in.

But the Ascendant isn't a physical object, its not the Sun or Moon. The Ascendant is nothing. I don't believe the constellations have an effect on us, if they did we would have to add allot more of them to astrology.

It says i am a Capricorn Ascendant, because that was the constellation rising on the east when i was born. They were many rising on the east when i was born.
