A sun-moon conjunction is a new moon. My Question : Within how many degrees from the sun does the moon come, before it is considered a new moon? i.e, What is the orb, during which a sun-moon conjunction is called a New Moon?IP: Logged |

I guess its called a new moon when the moon is approaching the sun and maybe the orb is around 5 degr? But when the moon starts going away from the sun, its not a new moon anymore? Eg. Sun at 8 deg Aries, Moon at 12 deg Aries. This is NOT a new moon right?IP: Logged |

It is not defined astronomically, unless we use the EXACT moment Sun and Moon are in opposition. However, it is commonly referred to as New Moon, if the orb is 6 degrees applying and separating (one night). IP: Logged |

Yes, but the same thing applies.(New moon is conjunction, Full Moon is opposition, you`re of course right) IP: Logged |
