Certain aspects are described as either very negative or positive. (In both natal or synastry.)
For example, "Sun square Mars".
I would like to know if whether the signs and houses each are in can temper this and make the energies very different.
Can an aspect really be generalized so much?

Yes, when planets are in their exalted, fall, detriment, or dignity, they operate accordingly. Same goes for which planet the house is in. They all get colored by these things.

Mercury RX in Sagittarius square your partners Venus in Virgo (both planets in their fall or detriment sign) would probably be different than those planets squared in their exalted or dignity signs.

Gemini Sun
Libra Moon
Gemini Mercury
Cancer Venus
Virgo Mars
Virgo Asc

And yes, I'm a guy!

Thanks. I did not even consider that.

I am now thinking about the difference between mutable squares, cardinal squares, and fixed squares. Meaning, are some easier than others?

I'm guessing it would probably depend on what type of energies you had in the rest of your chart (or charts in the case of synastry.)

Yeah it probably would. You'd also have to look at both natals to see how both would handle hard aspects. A person with a chart full of easy aspects with very little hard aspects is likely to have a difficult time with squares in synastry as opposed to some one with many hard aspects in their chart.

I have a hard time with squares in synastry because I only have one in my chart, Jupiter square moon.

That is quite interesting.

You only have one square in your entire chart?
