Personally I find orbs within 10 degrees to be way too generous, especially with outer planets or subtler aspects like sextiles.

I generally like to work with aspects within 5 degrees, although allow greater latitude when the Sun or Moon are involved.

I also take special consideration if the aspect is applying or separating and may allow greater degrees if applying.

How do you all work with this?

I think you maybe need to be a little more flexible. 10 degree orbs will often be spotted working in the natal chart, [con, opp and square]. The planets in question need to be taken in to account too, chart ruler and angles, sun + moon are all more likely to feel the influence to a larger degree.

Transits are a big one where we need a sliding scale. It's absolutely pointless using a 10 degree orb for an outer planet transit [say Pluto con Sun], and I only ever take notice of these when they're less than 2 degrees away], but a transit from Saturn to the inner planets may well be felt up to 8 degrees away.

Some people are planet sensitive and others are completely numb... it may be worth looking at the natal to establish which planet influence the person may be more sensitive too.
