I have a hard time deciding which house system to use from time to time. Usually placidus feels right and true, but there are some planets that change house positions when I use equal charts and some of those descriptions weigh heavily on me.

IE: Using equal house system I have Sun and Merc in house 8. Not to focus on the negative, but it does suit my example.. Bad point of having Mercury in 8H, it can signify the early death of a relative. The Sun in 8H can signify the early death of a father or husband. I feel like having both these placements stacked the odds against me and is why I went through the death of my father at the age of 17.
On the otherhand, I also portray the qualities of a 9th house Sun/Merc. I'm adventureous, idealistic, optimistic to a fault, blunt, I love learning and traveling. Nothing gets me talking more than asking me about the places I've been and the things I've seen... Unless of course you ask me about the things/people I loved while i was there 9H Venus as well.

What I'm getting at here is that maybe the Equal house system is better for predictions and the Placidus house better suited for interpretations/synastry. For example: If I were to post a question about "who am I?" a placidus chart would go with it. But if I were to pose a question pertaining to events or outside circumstances, perhaps the equal chart would be more appropriate?

Any thoughts on this? Has anyone else noticed similiar situations to mine, where both descriptions fit you, but one suits your personality and the other your circumstances?

I'm not sure about using equal and placidus for different things, like prediction vs. synastry charts, but I've found equal house is much more accurate when used for natal charts.

I think I've read here by some really good astrologers that if your houses are really uneven, you could use equal houses. I think it was Glaucus that said in ancient times they used their whole sign house system.

For me, there really isn't any difference in houses going from Placidus or Equal.

And yes, I'm a guy!

This kinda follows what I meant. Transits are usually used for indicators of events/predictions (Solar Return for example) whereas your natal chart would be who you are..

@somethingexcellent
I relate only relate to my 8H Sun/Merc in reference to that particular description. In every other way I feel like the descriptions of 9H Suns I read. I'm curious to see if I can pinpoint more "events" in my natal chart using the equal houses though.

@GG??
The houses in my Placidus chart aren't extremely uneven, it's just that my Sun/Merc sit right on the cusp of my 8th/9th houses.

I use the Placidus house system for the house ruler analyses that I utilize, to do with romantic attraction and taste. I find this method 'works' even for those born in Europe.

Ceridwen is a poster from Europe, and she uses the same types of methods that I do. She uses Placidus also. She once mentioned that Placidus seems to work even with people from Sweden... The uneven Placidus house cusps seemed more accurate, when say, the 5th house cusp changed signs or something.

I suppose it's possible that different house systems work better for different types of analyses. But Placidus works best for what I do.

Synastry comparisons would definitely fall under "who am I?" charts. I don't ever use equal houses for synastry. And my Placidus 5H 7H, and 8H make PERFECT sense in relation to your House Rulerships theories. (which I use and quote often, btw. Thank you so much for that wonderful little gem of insight!!)

I actually have a set of charts posted in Personal Readings that I would love for you to take a look at Lotis. I'm more curious as to how I affect him.. I already know I'm doomed where he's concerned and I'm not sure I can look at the charts with an unbiased opinion anymore lol

This is a possibility. I work mainly with interpretations/synastry/relationship type stuff, and find that Placidus works better for that.

I'm not big on doing predictions, so the Equal house system going better with forcasting is something I'll keep my eye on in the future. The skewed house cusps in the Placidus system are very subjective to our specific location on earth, they're personal, biased, and individual. Equal houses cusps could theoretically relate to a more objective, impersonal version of our experiences. We might not say these things about ourselves (as shown by Equal), but an outside observer, with a more dispassionate attitude towards us, might see these things very clearly. I'll give this theory some thought for sure.

If I knew more about the art of prediction I would test it myself. I just don't think I'm studied enough to do so and one incident off of one chart isn't enough to make me say YES!! Yes it's right!! lol

Thanks for the responses and considering the idea guys

I'm more into the predictive side of astrology, and have been wrestling with placidus vs equal for a while..

I understand the argument for placidus for interpretation and equal for transits.. But in regards to house rulerships how does it work? If I'm having Saturn conjunct Venus by transit, do you consider what houses Venus rules in placidus or in equal?

I've done lots of observations, and in my experience I feel that equal houses works for transits. As far as the natal chart goes, I've found that equal houses and placidus make sense :/

Like, in the past four years I've moved five times. In placidus, Uranus has been transiting my third, but in equal it has been in my fourth; my first move coincided with Uranus entering my equal house fourth house. When I started university, Uranus was square my sun, which rules my ninth house in equal, but nothing in placidus ( it is contained in my 8th house) . At the same time my sun is in sag (rules higher education), so yeah. I need to look into it more!! Lol
