Why thank you calliope23!
I got into astrology when I was quite young (like age 13), but I didn't really start understanding the astrological dynamics of attraction till I was in my 20’s…. That’s when I really started to figuring out the synastry aspects involved in physical attraction, and how the 5th, 7th, and 8th houses are involved in psychological attraction (personality types we’re attracted to).
Before this, I knew that I liked fiery, passionate, extroverted types of guys, who are open, friendly, good communicators, and who have a sensitive, vulnerable, compassionate side… And sign-wise I noticed a particular attraction to Aries and Sagittarius Sun signs. But for quite a while in my youth I didn’t really understand the astrological reasons for my taste.
Anyway, when I looked at my 5th, 7th, and 8th houses with deeper understanding it’s like this light-bulb went off in my mind, and I GOT IT…
5th house Aries ruled by Mars in Leo in the 9th house
7th house Gemini ruled by Mercury in Sagittarius in the 12th house, Jupiter in Cancer in the 7th house.
8th house Cancer ruled by Moon in Cancer in the 8th house.
These house placements totally match the personality description above.
I was reading the book ‘When Planets Promise Love’ by Rose Murray… In her book she goes into detail about how the 7th house describes our ideal mate, and also makes note that the 5th house shows part of what we like as well. She doesn’t mention the 8th house. I started incorporating the 8th house along with the 5th and the 7th house a little later in my studies (mostly from reading some really great astrology essays online, and the book ‘Skymates’ by Jodie and Steven Forrest). Anyway, I credit astrologer Rose Murray for giving me my own personal EUREKA! moment.
Well, you said you were OBSESSED with my ‘ideal mate’ birthday project, so I’ll explain how I did it (Ha ha!)...
A couple of years ago for some random reason I started looking though an ephemeris, and thought about what kind of chart I pick if I could choose one for an ideal mate. I didn’t really take myself seriously on this, so much as I did it for the fun of stretching my astrological muscles! I actually enjoyed doing my research to find the perfect birth date, with all the right synastry and signs that I wanted.
First I put an age limit on it. He’d to be no more then 5 years in age difference from me (younger or older). Then I picked some Sun signs to narrow it down even further… Already knew I was attracted to Aries and Sagittarius, both from experience and from what my chart shows, so I went with these two Sun signs. Then I looked for certain synastry aspects… I’m a big fan of Mars/Venus trines and conjunctions… So then I looked for Aries and Sagittarius birth dates that had Mars trine or conjunct my Venus. I also looked for good mercury aspects for communication, and good Moon aspects for emotional compatibility. I tried to find dates where Saturn didn’t make any more then one hard aspect to my chart, and the synastry in general was positive.
This was a fun process, and a good learning curve. There is no such thing as perfect synastry. Every date that I considered for my ‘ideal mate’ project had some type of synastry compromise involved… Had to the good with the bad. Finally, I settled on a date where the Sun is conjunct my Venus and Mars is trine my Venus, Venus is opposite my Mars (Venus/Mars DW on this date), the mercuries are conjunct, the Moon trines my Moon, and there is also some nice Saturn, Jupiter, and outer planet inter-connections in synastry.
Once I picked the date, I had to decide on an Asc and some likely birth locations. Especially, I wanted to make sure that my natal chart matched the 5th,7th, and 8th houses of my hypothetical ’ideal mate’. So I went on astro.com and played around with different locations and Ascendants.
I picked an Aquarius Asc, because with a Leo Dsc, the Sun as the 7th house ruler would be exact conjunct my Venus (very good for attraction). Sign-wise I’ve got a Mars in Leo and a Sagittarius stellium, which symbolically matches a Leo Dsc ruled by a Sun in Sagittarius. Plus my Mc and Saturn (ruler of my Capricorn Sun) in early Virgo would both be in the 7th house. For a Cap, having your Saturn in someone else’s 7th house is actually pretty good because your Saturn sign influences how your Sun expresses itself.
For Aquarius rising Gemini is usually on the 5th house cusp. On the date that I picked Saturn is in early Cancer and falls into the 5th house, and Mercury in Sagittarius rules the 5th house cusp. Symbolically, a guy having Saturn in the 5th house would strongly attract him to my Capricorn Sun personality, and the 5th house ruler in Sag would attract him to my Sagittarius Asc and stellium (again). Also, my Asc ruler Jupiter is in early Cancer, and conjunct Saturn on this date. So my 1st house ruler would be in his 5th house. In my chart Mercury is conjunct my Asc, which relates to him having Gemini on the 5th house cusp. A good deal of the sign Cancer falls into the 5th house, and my Moon sign is Cancer.
The 8th house is Virgo, ruled by Mercury in Sagittarius as well. Symbolically, Virgo is highlighted in my chart through my Virgo Saturn and Mc, and (again) I do have that Sag stellium. And, on the date I picked Mercury is conjunct my Mercury. Since my Dsc is Gemini, Mercury is my 7th house ruler…. So my 7th house ruler (Mercury) is conjunct my hypothetical ‘ideal mate’s’ 5th and 8th house rulers (Mercury).
Apart from the 5th, 7th, and 8th houses, I also pay attention to the Vertex Axis, and Juno, as factors in attraction.
For one particular location with Aquarius rising on this date, the Vertex is exactly opposite my Capricorn sun. The opposition on our Vertex Axis is often quite magnetic to us. In this chart the opposition on the Vertex Axis is Cancer/Capricorn… And I’m a Capricorn Sun/Cancer Moon.
On this date Juno is in Capricorn ruled by Saturn in Cancer…. Again, I’m a Capricorn/Cancer combo!
So yeah, basically I picked an Asc where the 5th, 7th and 8th houses would show an attraction to my chart by sign and by aspect. I also tried a Virgo Asc for this date, and Virgo Asc works pretty good too…. Capricorn on the 5th ruled by Saturn in Cancer (my Sun/Moon combo), Pisces on the 7th ruled by Neptune is Sagittarius in the 4th house (my Sagittarius and Cancer planets). A Virgo Asc for this date is my secondary preference, Aquarius is my first preference.
In that law of attraction stuff that people go on about these days, they say you attract what you think about most often. I guess I’m hoping that if I think of this a lot I’ll attract someone who is similar to what I wanted, even if I don’t get the exact match. My wish is that I get something this good or better! (because maybe God knows what you need better then you do, if you catch my drift).
It was really exciting researching this, and it’s kind of a fun way to cement what you already know of astrology. I recommend it to anyone as a learning project as long as it’s not taken too serious. You might like to try it.
