I think astrological definitions of masculinity and femininity are a little different then the ‘gender’ versions of masculinity and femininity. Gender masculine/feminine is about whether your personality is dominant or submissive, and if your taste is rough and basic or arty and refined.
Astrological masculine/feminine is whether you are reserved, quiet and introspective or outgoing, direct, and expressive. It’s also about how you value security Vs freedom.
A man heavy in Earth and Water could still be dominant in a gender related way, it’s just that he has more of a ‘strong-silent type’ personality, rather then an outgoing sociable type personality. The reserve that an Earth/Water guy with a strongly masculine gender has, can actually be quite intimidating. All they have to do is give you a look and you get it…
Same goes for women. A female with heavy Air and Fire could be super feminine in a gender related way (agreeable, submissive) only she has a more friendly talkative personality… Unless Saturn is strong in her chart, this type of female is often quite girlish and flirty. Nobody would think she was ‘masculine’ in a million years.
Planets, more then signs, seem to be responsible for gender bending so to speak.
Strong Mars, Sun, and sometimes Uranus, on females can make tomboys, and what some people like to call ball-busters!
Strong Venus, Moon and Neptune, on males can make effeminate guys, and metro-sexuals.
Most people are a mixture of influences though, and it can be hard to separate it all out. What I’ve noticed is that males more easily respond to the masculine planets in their chart, while females tend to respond more easily to the feminine planets in their chart, in terms of gender.
For example, a male with Mars conjunct Sun will be way more macho then a female with the same aspect. Yes, she’ll be forceful and energetic, and maybe a tomboy, but a guy with the same aspect will still be more dominating then she is.
On the other hand, a female with Venus conjunct Moon will be way more submissive then a male with the same aspect. Yes, he’d be artistic, charming, easygoing, nice, and all of that, but she’d have an even softer version of all these characteristics.
Still, this doesn’t change the fact that if Venus conjunct Moon guy met Mars conjunct Sun women… Yeah, she’d probably boss him around…
