First house Mars is more direct and obvious. You have confidence, courage, drive, a positive type energy others respond to, sorta peppy and spirited. If it is afflicted, you could be too impulsive and domineering. Everything is on the surface and plain to see. It's kinda like being a firecracker, loud and startling. On the dark side of the ascendant, instead of being so obvious and direct in your life, the Mars energy is stranger, more contorted so you are not seen as the energetic, peppy, fearless leader. In fact, you might not consciously lead, but your energy will influence people to do things in subtle ways, and you will not always be aware it is doing this. You could be perceived as weak, but actually, you are much stronger than others, it's just not apparent, and when others find out, it can be quite surprising and they might not know how to react or process the information. This is part of the 12th house "self undoing" theme. People could react badly to learning these things about you, that are not apparent at first. 12h Mars conjunct ascendant might also affect the way you look, so you don't fit in exactly, or might seem a bit off for whatever reason. 12h planets conjunct the ascendant can sometimes mean that. Nancy Spungen comes to mind because she had sun/Mercury conjunct ascendant from h12 with Pisces rising, suffered an injury during birth, was born blue, and had lifelong complications because of it, and you might know how her life went. She was her own worst enemy. This is an example of 12 house self undoing. Just think of someone you know who is their own worst enemy.
With Mars, you could be anxious, which is also another form of self undoing, so are paranoia, fear, obsession, selfishness/self absorption. Some people call it narcissism.
Or, you might take risks that can lead to your undoing, but 12h is usually connected to us on a psychological level. Taking risks can be a disorder of the psyche.
Addictions can be a form of self undoing since they can become out of control and the person who has one can end up dying.
Escapism as well, since people can spend so much time in fantasyland they neglect earthly responsibilities.
So, this is just skimming the surface. Just think of anything you do which works against your best interests. They are all ways which you destroy your self.
