WOW there's some seriously talented people! I hope to see you guys in the museums one day!Btw Smilingheart, I am in love with the portrait you did of the red headed lady. I want to ask, did you use pastel crayons? I love how vivid it is. It looks like you used pencils of some kind but I dunno. It's stunning! I really like your way with color. Is the second drawing Bob Dylan? Looks a lot like him! The third reminds me of James Dean a little. IP: Logged |

Thanks, Smilingheart A couple more thoughts on your work - I like the way you created shadows and contrast, especially since you used pencils! You did a really fine job, most notably on her face, around the nose and eyes. When I first saw it, I thought you used paint. I looked closer and wondered if it was pastels then I realized it actually looks more like pencils because the lines are so defined. When I took drawing, we didn't use these color pencils, just charcoal and graphite. Was this work you did for your class? I bet your teacher was amazed! IP: Logged |

Hey Starlight! Sorry that I didn't answer you earlier. I was busy with school. Thanks again - it's always lovely when people like your work. I appreciate it. I did that drawing for my portfolio. I was accepted into art school, so I guess they liked it. lol The only thing that you have to do to make it look like that is think in black and white. Then you choose the colors accordingly. Darker brown and violet for the areas where there would be shadows and lighter more yellow-ish colors for the lighter ones. What you can do at first is take a reference picture that is b/w and then imagine a coloring for it. It sounds more difficult than it is actually. You should try it!IP: Logged |

Thanks for the tips, Smilingheart! I might look for some black and white photos on line then try to draw them in color with pencils and the colors you suggested and see how they turn out. Skin tone is probably the most difficult part. I would need to imagine what the color photo would look like.Shadows can be difficult. Looks like you've got them down pat. IP: Logged |
