Examples of what I mean by commonalities is planet/house/sign blends that seem to have a common ground:
A natally has Capricorn Sun in 5th and B natally has 10th house Leo Moon; these placements would appear to have some similar blending of energies even if the Sun and Moon aren't in aspect in the synastry.
If they are in hard aspect, does it mitigate that any? For example, A has 9th house Moon square B's Jupiter in 4th.
Do you give this any consideration? Or do you go mostly by aspects?

Thanks for bumping it up. I've just finished reading it and that's EXACTLY what I needed to know! I've started using the search engine to pull up other threads started by Ceridwen. What a wealth of knowledge!

It does imo. Most the people I know do not aspect many planets in my chart, but, have Venus in a sign like Scorpio that understands an eighth house moon while people who conjunct are iffy at best. That's just been my experience.
